I am an American. I would like to live overseas in one of the following regions:

- Australia
- New Zealand
- Any country in Western Europe
- Any country in Northern Europe

I would like to study medicine in the country where I have the greatest probability of immigrating. Which country would be happy to grant permanent residency to an American who gets trained as a physician in their country? I mean, where would it be the easiest to immigrate?

I believe the British Commonwealth nations are generally favorable to US immigrants.

I think Australia/ New Zealand would be your best bet since they tend to have a shortage of many things.

The European Union will be the hardest place to emigrate to out of the areas you've listed. I know that Australia will welcome skilled immigrants, and I *think* New Zealand has a similar policy. It may change in the next few years, but you will get a great education in either country.

you know they will want to know about your grades too, right? do you think adcoms there are stupid and won't investigate someone just because they're from America?

If you have money, it is not so difficult to emigrate to the UK. It'd have to be after a couple years as an attending, probably. You get points for your MD and work experience.

I like the people in Northern Europe. Any of those countries welcome immigrants from America?

Most likely not.
They're pretty mature societies and have a really nice social welfare system etc. so they're pretty selective about who can become a citizen/resident.

When I went to Denmark, I saw so many, many uneducated Iranians and Iraqis. Legal citizens there. How do such uneducated people get to live there? Same story for The Netherlands.

I was just assuming they'd be like Swiss, where you have to pay a fortune just to have a shot at living there, but I guess I was wrong.
I did hear though that a lot of middle eastern/ n. africans are immigrating to fill in jobs that require hard labor. So maybe they get a pass.

Maybe those countries are consciously importing an optimal amount of poverty, like we do with Mexicans here.

Family reunification. You just have to get your "hook" over there, by a legitimate work visa, marriage or asylum.

Although at the same time there are (were, haven't been back to Denmark in a few years) a lot of very educated Iraqis and Iranians with MDs, PhDs, etc who are working as taxi drivers, cleaning crews, etc since their degrees aren't fully recognized or they can't speak the language well enough.

I would love to move to Denmark, I worked there for a couple years and the only reason I left is because of I ran out of visa renewals.

Texasm's post history reveals a lot of blatant racism. Oh, the irony that he wants to become an immigrant him/herself!

Why exactly do you want to emigrate?

If you want to leave the country, and you're a member of a minority group, you could always go to med school in Cuba http://www.medicc.org/ns/index.php?s=28&p=4. Through the program, if you promise to pracitce in an area of medical need, med school and housing are free, and you're also provided with a small stipend.

I'm surprised that this program doesn't somehow violate U.S. law.

The Mexicans that make it through the legal immigration process are generally some of the richest people in society....the #1 spot on Forbes list is Carlos Slim, a mexican.

I don't think he's an immigrant, and he made his money in Mexico.

Before you scream racism and accuse my posting history of a "lot of blatant racism" why don't you actually quote the several racist statements I have allegedly made in several threads? Come on, take on my challenge!

I haven't read his posts, but you're an idiot for equating racism and the desire to enforce immigration laws.

Their countries aren't safe. So they request an asylum status and are treated as refugees there. What's your excuse? Obama is anti-christ? 🙂

Well that answers my question about how uneducated people from third world countries end up in Denmark and The Netherlands. I have no problem with them ending up in better nations. I have no problem with Obama either. Stop screaming racism when there isn't any. I was merely wondering if Denmark and The Netherlands have a point-based immigration system like Canada and Australia where a cook used to (maybe still does) get full points in the category for immigration but a theoretical physicist gets zero points.

Denmark uses a point system for work visas and greencards http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/work/greencard-scheme.htm

To practice in the EU, you need to train in the EU, and you need EU citizenship. Many EU nations in the last decade have tightened immigration, and since many EU countries have physicians surplusses, there's not really a current need for immigrants. If you really want to live in the Netherlands or Denmark, you'd be better off getting a Ph.D. and working in biotech

Thank you for this information!!

Heh, I know a lot of these immigrants. They usually come back to Mexico with bucketloads of cash, open their own business or buy tons of land and become successful farmers. I know a guy that has over 6 houses and is building more for no apparent reason.

It's not too hard to emigrate to some countries in Europe as an attending. If you chug up 15,000 dollars for a masters degree you have your foot set for getting a foreign license in many EU countries. Sweden welcomes GP doctors with open hands if they do a masters degree, learn the language, pass some exams and get into a residency. The catch however is that swedish doctors make less cash than mexican doctors do. Spain is desperate for residents. over 50% of their residents are foreign doctorsd, many of them come from Mexico who for many reasons choose to do their residency there and emigrate back with the specialty degree.

I am not keen on Spain but the mention of Sweden interests me. I don't mind if doctors in Sweden make less than doctors in Mexico. You mention they need a masters degree. That means an MD?
