Ok, this is my shameless plug for the AmeriCorps Program I just finished up.

http://www.auch.org/americorps/index.html

They are recruiting about 38 new AmeriCorps for the upcoming year which starts 10/1 and lasts a minimum of 10 months, but officially 12. I was able to finish by July 31, and now I am set for school which starts in 3 weeks.

The host sites are neat and there is alot of opportunity for patient contact, etc. Plus, Utah is awesome for skiing and all kinds of outdoor biking, rockclimbing and camping. And, it's a pretty inexpensive place to live. 🙂

congrats for successfully completing your term. i'm also americorps*VISTA in so cal... hope all goes well with your outreach.

I've got nothing but respect for your work, and am glad to see such a plug. I did the peace corps, and came back with but one regret; That I didn't work to serve the underprivaleged in this country. I vouch that it's much easier to enact change from within one's own culture than from the outside of anothers. I'd highly recommend the americorps as a shorter term humanitarian option.

props to you! i'm finishing my term this friday! did healthcorps which is part of the americorps program. if ppl are thinking about what do do during their year off....

Congrats on finishing up!

I'm starting up with Americorps in Rochester NY in September, otherwise I would definitely check out your program, looks great.

How long do terms with Americorps last? Can you leave for interviews during the term?

They vary, but the ones I chose from were all 10 months. The vacation time also varies, but I think it seems to be usually about 10 days of vacation time that you can use for interviews. I had to decide between Rochester and the Richmond Red Cross National Readiness and Response Corps...I decided on Rochester because the NRRC requires you to be able to mobilize for 21 days on disaster relief with very little advance notice. The NRRC seemed like a great program otherwise though and was closer to most of the schools I applied to; it was a tough choice.

My program has training from mid September to the end of September, so i probably can't interview during that period. Otherwise I think it should be okay.

Thanks guys, for the good wishes!

I also applaud you for finishing up as well - I am so glad to hear that other people liked their placements, too.

I totally recommend it because you can definitely take time off to interview and the host sites are really pretty reasonable and supportive. Also, because it's only a year commitment (or ten months) it's really perfect for application year. When I was looking for a job for last year I had alot of trouble because interviewers either assumed I was going to medical school, or if I actually told them, they were like: forget it, we want someone for the long term.

Here, they want you to go to grad school. Pls there's the $4750 education award! And, I just found out, that universities do not consider you living stipend as income and so you are eligible for more financial aid. 🙂
