It is that time of year again when a new batch of bright eyed 4th-year medical students comes a knocking on the door looking to start a new life.

They haven't yet been beaten down by intern year, they have a lot of time on their hands, and they are eager to learn about anesthesia before they get started.

I have been recommending to all of my interviewees that they take the time to look at what is happening politically. I tell them about ASA and ASAPAC. I inform them that ASAPAC is their representative and if they want their interests represented, they need to get involved.

I ask them to educate themselves on the ANA and their agenda and to decide how they feel about it and what they want the ASA response to be.

I have had an excellent response. Most of the students have not heard about any of this and they seem to be very interested. Of course most interviewees feign interest in any advice you give them.

I challenge all of you who have contact with interviewees to do the same. Lets get our residents informed and involved from the get go.

Excellent advise. We need to plant the seed early on. Medical students and current residents ARE the future of anesthesiology. We need to ensure we reverse the current apathy that permiates anesthesiology and has gotten us where we are now.

What if we got a campaign started to have anesthesiology applicants donate to the ASAPAC on Match Day? I have been thinking about doing this for a while now...interview/travel expenses will be done with and out of mind, and it will be a nice way to celebrate finally making it to the big show.

OK, maybe it'll have to be the day after Match Day, since most matchers will be too busy "celebrating" themselves into a stupor. Unless the ASAPAC encourages DUI (Donating Under the Influence)... 😀

I'm in...won't be much but I'd do what I can.

I'm all for learning as much as I can about the ASA and the ASAPAC from residents on the interview trail. It's an extremely needed discussion.

Keep your eyes peeled for an email going out to all ASA med student members on this issue. One of the goals the governing council has for this year is increasing the number of student donations.

Whcih should be followed by a longer email to actual attendings who have more resources to contribute with and who are currently benefiting from all the efforts the ASA is making,.

Done and done! Donated to the ASAPAC this AM. All you successful matchers should do the same!

I hope they parallel-ly pursue decreasing student donations to Sallie Mae.
