It seems Ohio State has an analytical chemistry requirement.

http://www.pharmacy.ohio-state.edu/services/academics/entrylevel.cfm#Undergrad

Is this the norm now? I've heard of pharm school asking for EITHER physics or analytical chem but not both.

So if you're applying to a broad range of schools, i guess you should take these courses:

chem
ochem
bio
calc
physics
microbio
anatomy/physio
speech
analytical chem

Am i missing anything? biochemistry maybe? genetics? i guess prepharms should look at all the schools they are interested in to make sure they take the right classes.

That's why biochem is the best major for doing your pre-pharm electives🙂

some schools require at least 4 credits of Biochemistry ... some strongly suggest 8 credits

I also see some school requiring statistic and economics or something ridiculous like speech/communication. So it's best to check the PharmCAS school page for detail.

Is there really a best major for doing pre-pharm? I mean as long as you finished the pre-req are the adcoms really going to care what's your major?

How is that redicilous ? I think a lot of schools at least in california require a basic speech and economics - those are freshmen level classes. I'ts not like you are required to take pchem or graduate level science courses, those easy GEs will only benefit you and provide an easy way to bump up your GPA.

I'm not saying statistics or economics are useless, I found both subjects very interesting and useful. I just don't understand why these schools still require basic speech course, isn't that what freshman English classes are for?

I wish. Unfortunately the writing center can help people put together a structured paper, but there's no way that it can teach effective verbal communication. Basic speech really helps in that area. At least you're not stuck with "Interpersonal Communication" in addition to your basic public speaking.

Funny USC requires Stats, Economics, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication. I forget which school required Anal-chem🙂meanie🙂 I think it was Western.

starting in 2009, University of Washington will require 2 quarters of biochemistry as a prereq

Interpersonal Communication? What!?
Is that something a person really needs to spend hard-earned tuition money to learn?

Why are you in such a shock ? It only makes sense that if you are pursuing a pharm. D you should be able to communicate efectively.

Just curious, had you heard about this on-campus? Their pre-req and FAQ pages haven't been updated since the summer, so the only change they have listed on there for 2009 is that public speaking/communications will be required.

Biochem is very important in Pharm School, at least it is @ USN....they dont require it and it really threw me for a loop when we started....Lippincott makes an awesome biochem book. I would strongly suggest it to those who need to acquaint themselves with biochem concepts 🙂

I know that Auburn has a lot of strange requirements like Immunology and world history.😱

With pharmacy school becoming more competitive leading to a side effect of more applicants applying with more science courses, the pharmacy schools don't feel as bad adding more prereqs they feel many people would have taken anyway.

too many science requirements leads to less-rounded pharmacists IMO.

that sounds like something someone without a good science background would say.🙂
