Anatomic Sciences, Question 18, Released Exam Booklet 1-F

The greater petrosal nerve contains which of the following components?
    a)sympathetic fibers
    b) general visceral afferent fibers
    c) general somatic efferent fibers
    d) parasympathetic fibers
    e) special visceral efferent fibers

    1. A and E
    2. B and D
    3. C and E
    4. All of the above
    Answer: B and D

Could someone explain what the general visceral afferent fiber function of this nerve is? I know it provides taste to the palate, but isn’t that special sensory rather than general sensory?
