Hi sdn members.
I have a 22 AA and 22/22/22 on the DAT overall. I took the DAT during spring break and have a cumulative GPA of 3.59 and sGPA of lower 3.5's. I am in a good state university in my state. I was wondering if I should take the anatomy and physiology classes needed for Midwestern's application. I was thinking of applying to Midwestern in AZ, but my parents think my scores and stats will be good getting in an in-state dental school. If that is the case, do you people think I still need to take those prereq courses? Also, I will be applying for the upcoming applications cycle.

Well, the question of whether you should take anatomy and physiology classes depends on if you plan to apply to schools that require them.

Midwestern-AZ and Midwestern-IL do require anatomy/lab and microbiology/lab. If you plan to apply to those schools, you should take the classes.

You can look on different schools' websites to figure out which classes you need to take. Technically, you just need to take the classes before you matriculate. So, you have a whole year next year to take them too.

You don't have to take the classes if they don't interest you, but having exposure to a class always helps later on. But I'm sure you're bright enough (from your DAT/GPA) so it's totally up to you.

I say take them, they will prepare you for dental school (No matter where you go!). I believe the more exposure to anatomy the better!

Why wouldn't you? What else do you plan to take? Some ethnic studies courses?

You probably wont get into ASDOH because they tend to favor students with lower DAT scores and GPA. If you have your heart on MWU-AZ then take em, if not then dont bother. With your scores your competitive enough to get into other schools that dont require it and it wont make you stand out as a better applicant. You're 22 takes care of that quite nicely 🙂

Why do you trash ASDOH whenever you can? They don't favor low GPA and low DAT, they favor community service and well rounded applicants and don't use DAT and GPA as their most important deciding factors. Also, I have been told by most everyone that anatomy is one of the best classes you can take in undergrad partly because anatomy can be difficult in dental school and partly because anatomy is a tough class that shows adcoms how you are likely to preform in DS. Getting A's in A&P would definitely make you stand out as a better applicant.

The average applicant for ASDOH has lower stats than the OP. You can use google and their website to verify this fact. They tend to accept lower end students which is also a fact. Additionally, A&P in ugrad is nothing like the Gross Anatomy in dental school and while it "helps" it wont make or break your understanding in dental school. Additionally, when you have a 22AA it doesnt matter if you have 1 extra class or not, you're not going to be accepted based on that AP course vs your entire academic history including a monster 22AA. Use logic instead of your hostility towards people and then you'll be able to see clearly.

in 2011 ASDOH had an average DAT score of 18AA and the lowest average GPAs out of all schools 3.31 oGPA and 3.16 sGPA. Remember these are the AVERAGES, so 50% of their class got in with lower stats than these. Sorry if I'm being mean on the level of competitiveness at that school.

Why are you even talking about ASDOH? Why did you even bring it up? Do you feel superior to those that get into ASDOH when your stats were very similar to the ones you are trashing and they were better rounded applicants with a stronger community service background? You have some type of weird vendetta against ASDOH, UMN, and me.

Secondly, please name some courses other than gen bio 1&2 that will help you more directly than A&P in dental school and impress adcoms more if you do well in them. The only ones I can think of that are even equivalent are biochem and possibly microbio, though micro tends to be a fluff class. It is especially useful if your school offers A&P as 2 separate 4 or 5 credit courses. They are incredibly difficult and in depth and will only benefit you in the future if you take them serious and do well.

The OP is interested in his state school which seems to be ASDOH, based on the MWU-AZ comment. Most schools dont require AP and yes Biochem and Micro would just as equivalent as AP. The "depth" you're talking about isnt necessary since most dental schools dont require AP. With a 22AA the OP is guaranteed a spot somewhere and adcoms will care more about his awesome DAT than your "magical best ever" AP course.

But thanks for being known as that insulting guy on SDN 🙂

Oh, okay. I thought about applying to Midwestern as a "safety" since my numbers are on the higher end of their admissions spectrum. thanks for clearing that up with me.

No, actually, I would take more chemistry related courses since I am a biochem major. and biochem is in the chem dept at my college

Actually, to clarify, my in state schools would be in Texas. I haven't done my shadowing yet, and I plan to do those at the end of this school year after the school year ends.

My original "worst case" scenario will be the chance that I don't get admitted in either of the three texas dental schools, so that is why I thought of applying to Midwestern AZ since that one is the old school (as compared to the IL school). To apply to MDUAZ, I will need the microbio lab, anatomy class, and phys class. So I have some schools to fall back upon if I get rejected from all of the Texas dental schools. But thanks for your answers.

Take the necessary classes that will help you graduate on time. its nice to have AP, but if its not a required for the schools you're interested in then dont bother taking it. You have an amazing DAT score that will help you land in a lot of good schools, dont let some people on here freak you out. You wont get rejected from said school due to your lack of one to two AP courses  Majority of the time GPA and DAT scores are the only factors that affect admission.

Yes, see, I heard on previous posts on a previous thread that Baylor likes to see many biology courses, of which I do not have that many compared to the biology major. so that is why I want to apply to Midwestern. but thanks for your reply wired.

I'm not familiar on how TX schools work, obv the more bio classes the better, but again with your scores you're definitely getting in somewhere!
