  1. Pre-Pharmacy
So I'm applying to Pharmacy School this Summer. I know some schools require Anatomy, but unfortunately my school doesn't offer it (Mind you it has BOTH a pharmacy program and medical program... wtf mate? ). What they DO offer is Mammalian Physiology, which is basically Human Physiology and which I have already taken.

So my dilemma is this. Should I take Anatomy during the summer (summer sessions might already be full) or should I just apply to the schools that don't require anatomy ??

EDIT: Sorry about the duplicate threads. If a mod can merge them that'd be great 😀

Take it in the fall?

If not then I'd try to take it this summer yes.

Is there another school where you can take the anatomy component? I would go for that, even if it is CC. You want to be able to apply broadly. I am not sure what school do not require A&P. You should look into your schools of choice to see if they require it. If enough of them do, then I would try to find somewhere to take it. You can probably take the course online depending on the requirements of the pharm schools you are applying to.

Thanks. Hopefully I can take it in the summer. Not many California CCs have summer school and I just might be a little late to get an empty spot.

Well, there goes my summer. Lol
At least my GPA will hopefully go up

Well crap, all the classes are full. So much for that idea.

Thanks for the advice !

I emailed the proffs and they all said I have to crash the course and try to get into the class via a lottery or w/e. Guess we'll find out if I'm lucky or not. Haha

Hi, I'm in the same situation as you. I'm thinking about taking Anatomy in the fall. However, since its not a sure thing I can get in, I made a list of schools that do NOT require Anatomy:

Northstate
Massachusetts
Albany
Erie
East Tennessee
Lipscomb
Shenandoa
Concordia
Hampton

Hope that helps with your decision.

Oh sweet !
Thanks a lot, that really clears some things up. I believe there are a few Cali schools that don't require Anatomy either, but I might be wrong.
Did you take Microbio yet?? I had a minor brain fart and won't be able to take it until Fall or Winter quarter O_O Hope the schools won't tell me I have to finish all of the prereqs BEFORE applying (because I know there are some that do that)

By the way hye, weren't you on Rabbit Owner's Club? I don't know if you remember but we got together with a few other people and drove through Angels Crest Highway a year ago.

Well, actually, you're right... Northstate (a Cali school) doesn't require Anatomy, and neither do UCSD, UCSF, and USC.

Yeah, I took microbio... difficulty was sorta over-rated actually (either that, or my school offered an easy course). But yeah, some schools are anal like that...

What is the Rabbit Owner's club?

Guess it's UCSF or UCSD for me... HA ! I wish -_-

Oh nvm then. Rabbit Owners Club is a forum for VW Rabbit owners.

I went to UCSD that offers Animal Physiology and does not offer Human Anatomy. What I had to do was apply to the San Diego Community Colleges for Human Anatomy. Apply early because I was #6 waitlist (got in) and there was another girl who said she has been waitlisted 3 times and never got in. She finally got in. A friend of mine was in the same situation but he applied late and ended up having to commute from San Diego to Huntington Beach for Human Anatomy class.

Definitely don't limit your opportunities just because you're missing one course. Best of luck!! I just finished my Human Anatomy class last week 🙂

Have you tried e-mailing all the schools you are interested in and asking if they will accept the other physiology course instead? I know I had the same issue (my school only offers animal physiology and no second semester of human anatomy). A lot of the schools were friendly enough to allow me to take it in place of Human Anatomy 2 or in substitution of human anatomy lab (since my school doesn't offer a lab section). I think they were mostly concerned with me meeting the same number of credit hours in an anatomy-esque course.

Some schools can be outright rigid in what they want though - often times the newer schools. I'm not sure if thats because they are worried about building a reputation, but it can be frustrating.

Hope you get everything figured out though. 🙂

Thanks for the advice you guys (or girls).

Unfortunately I'll be staying in Los Angeles this summer and ALL the science classes are full at ALL the CCs (dumb move on my part signing up so late). I'll try to crash the classes and see how that works out. I just hope the pharmacy schools will accept me conditionally so I can have time to finish the courses that I need to take.

I've just emailed the schools and will eagerly await their response. I can already see most of them saying they need HUMAN anatomy/physiology so I'm not too stressed about it. I will probably have to take Anatomy sooner or later.

I was in the same situation as you last summer. (Yeah, I went to UCSD.)
By the time I tried to get into Anatomy in a CC they were already full. It took a lot of effort to figure out all the schools I could apply to, especially also since I didn't take physiology lab. I would recommend taking Anatomy so you don't have to limit yourself so much, and maybe also physiology lab.
The schools I applied to were UCSD, UCSF, USC, UOP and Northstate. Luckily got in to UCSD! Good luck!

Physiology Lab (shudder) lol I'll definitely look into it.
Ohh good luck on getting into Skaggs !! That's my dream program but I don't think I'll get it. Hopefully they have a soft spot for one of their own (also doing research at UCSD)

Are you first year??

A small update. I emailed some of the Pharm Programs I want to attend and so far so good. Two already wrote back and gave me lists of courses that require their physiology and microbiology requirements. Both of those lists listed classes I've already taken or will be taking next quarter. 😀

I know I felt the same way. I heard bad stories about the physiology lab at UCSD, so I would say just take it at a CC if you decide to go for it.

I think UCSD does like their own students. I didn't think I would get in either. That's great that you're doing research too. Keep it up!

I'll be a first year in fall.

Thanks for the heads up. I was about to get waitlisted for the physio lab, lol.
Speaking of labs... it seems nearly impossible to get into one. All the bio lab courses are full within a day or two of registration, it's madness i tell you !

Oh I bet you're excited to be starting pharm school !! I'll be at UCSD next year as well. Could definitely use an insight into the pharmacy curriculum from someone like yourself 🙂 If you don't mind of course

Spreading your net wide and having persistence can pay off when it comes to this. I had to take A&P at a CC too, and my search for a campus went from Glendale to South LA to Barstow. Ended up getting a precious wait-list seat at one, showed up first day of class, and the professor took everyone from the waitlist, plus a dozen or so more beyond that, since so many people end up dropping the class by second midterm or so.

So it may be worth it to find a school offering a relatively large anatomy section (even if it's full) and showing up on day 1 to see if you can get in anyway. Can't hurt to try, anyway; worst case scenario is they say no. Also doesn't hurt you to apply to the school(s) you're thinking of, even if you end up not taking any classes there (I was "admitted" to three CCs which I ended up not attending, because I got into A&P at the 4th one).

Sure thing, Beet Pharmer. I sent you a PM

Fellow Triton here. Just take anatomy at one of the jc's so you aren't limited in the number of schools you can apply to. Mesa's classes were really easy to crash for me.

By the way, UCSD's physio lab was a nightmare, but it was the most rewarding nightmare I've ever been through. 😉
After surviving that class, there is nothing I can't conquer anymore. 😎

Well howdy do !! 😀

Yes I've heard pretty bad things about the Physio lab. Thankfully the schools I'm applying to don't need it.

Unfortunately I live in LA and that's where I'll be spending the summer. Most of the CCs there either don't offer the class I need or are full up to their necks. It's gonna be a fun summer crashing classes 😀

I love crashing classes. Although it gets disheartening after the 4th or 5th attempt. LOL =/

ucsd extension offers anatomy now.. you can get a course fee waiver if you are still enrolled as an undergraduate - just go to the ucsd extension office by thurgood marshall and ask for a fee waiver!

san diego community college district (mesa, miramar and city) are shutting down for the summer due to budget cuts so you'd be best look for anatomy at the other local CC in san diego

i also graduated ucsd a year ago and attending pharmacy school in the fall! 🙂

i will sincerely miss RIMAC a ton!

Yeah RIMAC is awesome ! Too bad they always close the bball courts for frat dodgeball or w/e else they play.

Thanks for informing me about UCSD extension, but I live in LA and that's where I'll be this summer 🙁
I looked into UCLA extension but it seems quite expensive. Maybe they will give me a fee waiver too, I'll check that out.

If you plan on taking the class at a community college, there's a very good chance that people will drop or will be dropped, so it's definitely a good idea to show up on the first day. At my school, if you don't show up the first day, you will get dropped, even if you're not wait listed.

Plus there's always going to be ******s that sign up for classes they don't belong in or haven't completed a pre-requisite for yet.

Btw, I also plan on taking Anatomy this summer. I've heard the course is pretty rigorous. What level of difficulty should I expect to face, especially considering it's a sped up summer course?

This questions is probably aimed at the ones who already took it, but I'll give opinion anyway 😀

I'm finishing up Human Physiology right now (quarter system) and the class was quite hard but definitely manageable. I imagine summer session Anatomy is going to be WAY harder just because of the nomenclature plus lab. I don't know if you've had to learn taxonomy in one of your bio classes, but it's probably something like that x10 (x100 would be overkill... or would it ?!?!)

Hey, I dunno if you already did this, but I would first look at all the schools that you want to go to, and ask them about the pre-req. That's what I did, and many schools said physio was fine (I currently go to UCSD too btw).

A list of schools that e-mailed me back and said anatomy was not required, but physiology was okay:
Okla U
Drake
Buffalo
UIC
UWash
Purdue
Cinncinati

I would e-mail them myself though.

Thanks for listing the schools ! I think I will be applying to a few schools on that list. Besides, my dream school doesn't require anatomy so I'll probably end up volunteering during the summer.

Also, on a kind of unrelated note, does anyone know any cheapish, accredited online schools that offer anatomy courses that still has enrollment right now? This could probably help OP, but should help me as well.

Hmm, I would actually check with the schools to see if they accept online classes in the first place.

I also have a question though... I'm already signed up for courses in the summer, and am planning on signing up for some more in the fall, one of which is anatomy. Given that its still not a sure thing that I can get into ANY fall classes, and given how it appears that anatomy courses (in California, anyway) are severely impacted this year, would it be a good idea to apply to any schools that require anatomy? I'm asking, because I have a potential 'pool' of 14 schools; 5 require anatomy, and the other 9 already compose a nice average GPA 'spread', and I was planning on applying to 8 schools anyway...

That's something you have to figure out for yourself. I applied to a few schools that I didn't have all prereqs for, which left me taking 19 semester of mega intense senior level science classes my final semester and I probably aged 10 years in that semester trying to pass everything to not revoke my acceptances which were conditional. I'd really think about this hard as to not to put yourself into a tough position scrambling for a class at the last minute if I were you.

Thats true... On the one hand, it would make the process easier to apply to non-anatomy schools, since it would give me more wiggle-room for the other courses that I need in the fall (I kinda got screwed in previous classes as far as the # of credits/labs required, so I gotta retake them)... but it would also suck if I didn't get in anywhere, possibly because of not taking anatomy/applying to different schools... its truly a quandary :scared:
