just finished anatomy of sup. extremity, now studying thorax, help!, never knew something as small as an intercostal space could hold so much. when will the drudgery end???!!

when do you finish residency?🙂 😀

I would give anything to be back in anatomy. Biochemistry is killing me. On second thought, if I were back in anatomy I'd still have to move on to biochem. I would give anything to be in genetics.

Intercostal Space is complicated stuff. There are only three things in the intercostal space, VAN for vein first, then artery and nerve. Anterior intercostal arteries came from internal thoracic artery that anastomesis with posterior intercostals arteries came straight from the aorta; musculophrenic arteries supplies the lower portion of the intercostals which arrives from the internal thoracic as well. I don't quite remember the rest... something to do with cervical branches of subclavian artery or something like that.... and something to do with hemiazygos veins... had it last exam period... have totally forgotten most of the crap by now... so useless.... unless, of course, if surgery is your destiny.

anatomy is the dumbest thing i have ever studied in my life, and that includes the hour long complimentary and alternative medicine lecture.

Alright! There are others who share my loathing of Anatomy! The smell, the minutiae that we will never have to know again(not even for the boards!), and the time it takes to study, in the lab, and at home. I don't like the class at all.

I guess I'm more of an internal medicine kinda guy, and I like thinking about disease processes(eventhough I don't know any yet😉 ).

Well, here's to the end of Anatomy! I have 4 weeks then finals, and I'm done forever! (Next quarter we have Histo, but its not the same).

When are you done?

just 4 more weeks till anatomy ends for me!!! 🙂

histology absolutely sucks as well. personally i have not enjoyed any of the classes we've had so far, except maybe biostats cuz it was easy.

Hey Street--

What makes Histo bad? I'm taking it next quarter, so I kinda want a heads up. It can't be worse than gross right?

what makes histo bad? the fact that every slide you see will be pink or purple circles and you'll have to "use your imagination" to figure out what it is. and the fact that identifying electron micrographs is like playing "extreme close-up", like where they would zoom up on some random ass thing 300000x and ask you what it's supposed to be. histo is stupid stupid stupid.

I like what they did with our class. Molecular, Cellular Bio combined with Genetics, Biochem and Histo... Throw in a class of medical ethics and humanities and you have my first 10 weeks of school. Finals are this week.

Anatomy and Phys start next week and run until May. I sort of like not having to deal with Biochem anymore after this week. Gets all that stuff out of the way to move onto bigger and hopefully better things.

Gross anatomy at my school was pretty good, but my histology class sucked royally. Just wait until you get to second year and you have pathologists teaching you histology instead of research PhDs. Trust me, it makes a world of difference. 🙂

Btw, you do have to know Gross Anatomy for your boards, and sometimes it's a small percentage of your exam and sometimes it's a substantial percentage of your exam (it all depends on your luck, I guess). However, if you can recall the information (clinical relevance) it's worth many an easy point.

Also, don't worry too much about retaining information from your first year. It's usually not placed into a clinical (read: relevant) context and thus it can be difficult to motivate yourself to study and retain it.

Once you hit the second year, nearly everything is clinically relevant and just about all information is important for you to know for boards, wards, etc. Also, each second year class hits on the important topics from first year (not exactly a large amount), so you really don't need to remember all that bunk. It was a shock to me, actually.... I never realized that I could forget most of what I learned last year. What a waste of time.

I absolutely hated Gross Anatomy when I took it. Which is probably the reason I failed it (very badly I might add). I'd always preferred courses like physiology and even biochemistry. I just hated the rote memorization of gross.

I'm retaking the class now, and just had my first test on Friday. I'm not sure of my written score, but I got a 99 on the practical, and will probably be pretty close on the written. Of course my study habits are vastly different than last year. I wouldn't say that I studied great hours (never missed any sleep), but I kept up and studied every day for the first test.

Stinger, I probably know you. I'm assuming you are an M2 at UAMS (based on your statements about the microanatomy course). I'm your guys former webmaster.

Well I have to go and study.

i had histo/path in first year and that sucked too. but it was more interesting than histo.

I'm doing anatomy of the head and neck and I'm finding it quite interesting. Anybody else doing head and neck and how are you getting on?

Anatomy can be tedious, and depending on the specialty you might not use much of it. However, if you go into surgery or radiology you would be suprised how much detailed anatomy you are required to know. I never thought I'd have to know all of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the knee, ankle, wrist, etc until I did my musculoskeletal radiology month and had to identify them all on MRI.

That's obviously where we concentrated most of our effort 😉 I found it fascinating, but I was a little disappointed we stopped at the clavicle. For the record, opening the cranial vault, removing & examining the brain, and sagitally bisecting the skull had to be the three coolest days of dental school so far. 😀

Biggman-

Sorry to hear your gross experience last year was awful, but it's great to see things working out for you so far this year. Congrats on the first practical score! 😀

The only classes I enjoyed from first year at UAMS were biochem, gross, and GI physiology. I hated our microanatomy department, I depised Neuroscience, and I felt Cell Bio as a standalone course was totally unnecessary. But at least second year's more enjoyable. Hopefully it'll only get better.

we've just finished a whole yr's worth of anatomy: gross, histo & osteology. i enjoyed the histo, but lotsa ppl hated it - they said it made them feel queasy looking down the eyepieces & all...; loathed gross for the way they asked questions in the written paper, and pretty much got marks for jam in the osteo. i'm just waiting to see the marks to know if i'm off to 3rd yr (crosses fingers & holds thumbs & prays)

I'm not saying this to brag, but to show that gross anatomy can be done, even by someone who used to absolutely loathe the class. Apparently there were some alternate correct answers on the practical so I actually got a 102% (we have a 2 point bonus question). I also got a 100% on the written test.

Again, I say this not to brag, but to encourage others who might be struggling with school or even failed classes, as this was certainly my situation last year.

There is hope:clap:

Hi,

I'm doing head and neck now as well, our test is next wednesday. I really enjoyed it. There is a ton of stuff but it makes more sense and is a lot more fun then the abdomen. The only problem is there is a ton of stuff to know.

we start head and neck next week I believe, after our 2nd test on monday.

We're finishing the upper limb tommorow with the hand.
That dissection will suck 🙁

good news is that I rocked my 1st anatomy lab practical 😀
