I can't believe how cool these gas people are.

I just came back from visiting a local private hospital that has a busy OR. Just showed up and said I want to talk to an anesthesiologist. They let me put scrubs on, went into the room, talked to the anesthesiologist who was just finishing up the case. She was so cool. I expressed my interest in the field and said that I was done with all my rotations, but, would like to hang out with her in the OR and get more experience. She totally hooked me up with the department.

This is the 2nd time that I have just walked into a hospital and the anesthesiologist have totally embraced me with open arms. I don't know any other field that has been this friendly to me. Really goes to show the type of personality within the field and, that, these people are generally very happy to be doing what they're doing for work. 👍

I agree! They are uniformly a nice bunch of people to work with.

I third this! I really enjoyed my anesthesia rotation, and all the attendings were laid back and really relaxed.

This is one of the main reasons I chose anesthesiology. Hopefully all the gunners out there won't change this laid-back attitude of the field, or else if might not be as awesome. I think the nice thing about anesthesiologists is that they always seem willing to show you the ropes and sit down to give you pearls about the field. Also some of the humblist (sp?) people you'll ever meet, and most of them are wicked smart!

I think that there is a strong selection bias. Anesthesiologists work behind the scenes. I think that those with bigger egos are less likely to choose anesthesiology as a career because there is less ego gratification than can be had in other fields. Pt's see us briefly, we are often viewed as the surgeons subordinate, etc.
