Just a word of encouragement to all DO students to consider anesthesia as a specialty.

Many CRNAs are making 150-200K so I wondered let the CRNA have that job when many MD/DO students could get that paycheck instead of the CRNA.

So please look into anesthesia and I hope to see MD/DO students go into gas in masse.

As a CRNA with 10 years experience, and hopeful DO student starting in 2006, let me answer why relatively few physicians are actually "sitting on the stool" doing hands-on anesthesia themself.

MONEY.

The vast majority of anesthesia practices in this country have anesthesiologists "floating" around the OR suite, supervising CRNAs who are actually on the stool in each room. That way, the anesthesia practice can bill for supervised CRNA practice. The usually-allowed ratio is 1 doc to 4 CRNAs.

The doc can bill for each of the four (simultaneous) anesthetics being given. The doc will pay each CRNA around $130K/year (average pay), and keep the balance. That way, the doc will take home, on average, $450K/yr, which is much more than if the doc were doing his/her own cases all day long.

There are exceptions to this practice mode, of course, but they are the very tiny minority.
