Posting this on behalf of a 4th year friend of mine.

Status: US DO

Step 1/Level 1: first time pass

Step 2: 26x (260-265 range)

Level 2: 54x (545-550 range)

Clinical Grades: 3 H, 2 HP (5 required clerkships, rest are P/F)

Research: 1 pub, 1 in-house poster (non-conference)

Volunteering: some non-school related community volunteering related to a religious organization.

Class Rank: 4th quartile (bottom 25%)

No geographical preference, thinking about couples matching with someone applying gen surg (also DO).

This is all the information that was provided to me. What are this person's chances of matching gas this upcoming cycle? They are worried about being bottom quartile and low research # (but I feel like the step 2 makes up for the class rank?). They're open to dual applying, and would also be happy in IM or psych.

If he couples match, pretty unlikely. Gen surg and anesthesia are both competitive for DOs and low tier MDs. If not, toss up

How can you be fourth quartile with 3 honors and 2 high passes? Does everybody honor everything?

Obviously the couples match would require information about how competitive their partner is for gen surg. As a solo person, probably a decent shot. That's a very high step 2. Do they have an in-house anesthesia program and if so what have they told them?

Our school only ranks you based on preclinical grade GPA, and clinical grades are just kind of standalone. This kinda makes me think his worries over his rank is misplaced since he did very well on Step 2, and clinical grades aren't even factored into rank.

There are no in-house programs at our school. I have no idea what his partner's stats are like, so I guess I'll just show this thread to him as if it's solo. It's good to hear he's got a good shot. His biggest worries are his rank and his low research output - do you think his clinical grades and Step 2 overshadow these deficits? I'd really like for this person to match bc he's the sweetest person I know lol, and I'm sure he'll be perceived very well on auditions.

If he couples matches and one doesn’t match, do they both not? If so, he should probably just apply alone unless they’re engaged or married

You can include up to 300 (or something) matches, which can include scenarios where one matches but the other does not. It depends on how many interviews both get. They can decide up until the end of interview season so they can see how interviews go before deciding

You’re probably fine. But the ranking in couples matching is basically based on the least competitive person.
