If you like both basically the same, is the anesthesia "doom and gloom" enough where I should be swayed toward EM? It doesnt sound like there is THAT much less doom and gloom over on their forum.

Don’t make a career decision based on an anonymous forum. Go talk to real, in-person staff. Do rotations in both, and make an informed decision.

Both specialties (really, all specialties) have their own individual issues.

Consider your choice very carefully as what you may like at age 35 (age 35-50) may not be what you like at age 50 (50-65). A career spans a very long time and FWIW ER docs are not happy for most of that second portion of their careers.

Once you pick ER you will be locked into that specialty for life and all the nights, weekends, holidays, etc start to get very old by age 45; many end up doing DOC IN THE BOX for the second half of their careers or stop practicing ER all together.

This isn't a TV show, it is real life, so look at the whole picture over a long career.

I did emergency and switched to Anesthesiology. Never been happier....
