Hi everyone , US MD midtier school. MS3 going into anesthesia
No grades yet for clinicals but hopefully a couple honors.
STEP 1 241
4 cases reports and 1 letter to editor published during med school (not in anesthesia). 2 years of basic science research and a few poster presentations before med school.

I am trying to figure out a list of programs to apply and would appreciate some input. Ideally in the west coast (have family in San Diego) but open to other places. I would like the best training possible according to my stats (realistically). I was thinking in doing a pain fellowship afterwards. Any constructive suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So with what you have posted you will be competitive for top programs. I would put a lot of thought into where you would like to practice AFTER residency because the best way to get a job in a certain area is to come from a local residency (San Diego is a tight market).

Thanks,

Oh I see. I am not sure exactly where I will want to practice. I was thinking maybe moving to a place where I can make some good money for 2-3 years to catch up
with my loans and then figure out it later where I want to set up shop for good.

With that in mind, would you mind suggesting a few residencies programs?
Is San Diego a good one?

What about OHSU and Washington ? Are they good programs ?
I don’t know if I would be competitive enough for UCSF and Stanford . From what I read in the internet UCSF and Gen Mass are top programs. But I don’t really known. All the info that I am learning about the residencies are online, so not too credible. My school does not have an anesthesia residency so it is hard to learn about the residencies programs. The anesthesiologist that I am working he is “old school” and I am not sure if he is up-to-date about what residencies are good or not. So any ways , I’m gonna make a list.

San Diego
UCSF
UCLA
Stanford
OHSU
Washington
Keck
Irvine
Harvard (Gen mass)

UCSD is a good program and it has a fairly strong pain management program. Wallace is the big name there and he is internationally known. You are competitive for all the programs you listed. Don’t sell yourself short, you definitely have a chance at MGH and UCSF.
