What type of post-residency training is required for this, and could you theoretically make a career of doing only CT cases, especially if you wanted to do a lot of peds cases? Thanks in advance.

Pedi fellowship is technically all that is required. I have talked with the pedi guys that do cardiac and they recommend doing both pedi and a CV fellowship for TEE training/certification and obviously, pedi experience. I am not sure if there are dedicated pedi fellowships that allow you to do mostly CV, but I suspect Boston Children's and Texas Children's have that option.
boston's children's does it - but for the most part there aren't that many jobs where you do 100% pedi CT unless you are at a huge dedicated pedi CT center (of which there are only a handful).... so most Pedi CT anesth. folk do either adult hearts or regular pedi cases on the side...
I'm actually pretty interested in this track myself. Texas and Boston Children's offer 1-year fellowships for those who have completed a fellowship in peds/hearts. CHOP, I just learned, requires 6 months of dedicated pedi-hearts from their peds fellows for a special certificate in pedi-hearts. (This may break down into 5 mos OR, 1 mos cardiac ICU.)
Great debate a couple of months back about who is better trained, peds or cardiac, to do these. Also a great debate about who should be doing the echo for these. Check out http://www.scahq.org archives for more info.
