hello everyone..
long time watcher of this site, but first time poster, so plz be gentle ok 😳
im having an attack of confidence.. i would absolutely love to go to pharmacy school and become a pharmacist, but i am not so sure i can get in. my grades/gpa are mediocre at best, and i dont know how i will do taking the pcat just one time. but there is no doubt in my mind that this is what i want to do. my motivation is solid, my passion is incredible.

please read my stats and give an honest opinion, even if it is confirming my worst fears.. :scared:

im a sophomore in college applying for fall 2006.
umkc's five-year program interests me, so that's the only place i am applying since i dont have enough prereqs done for any other place.

gpa: 2.667 (but rising for sure after this current semester!)
act: 28
pcat: to be taken in january 2006
relevant courses completed: gen chem 1: A, gen chemistry 2: B, calculus 1: C, calc 2: D [this one killed my gpa], english1: B, macroeconomics: C.

currently taking biology 1 (making straight A's so far), organic chem 1 (eh, decent), quantitative analysis, medical terminology (A), world civilizations 1 (A). physics 1, bio2, orgo2 and orgolab is set for next semester.

in spare time i research a lot with an orgo professor (he doubles as the pre-pharmacy advisor for the college); analyzing water samples by photospectrometry, using CE to separate vitamins. ive stuck with him since i was a freshman, so this is my second year working with him. hes going to write an AMAZING letter of recommedation.

last year i held a committee chair position in the american medical students association (since there is no pharmacy-related clubs, i get my medical information from this one). i quit it this year so i could devote my time to the service clubs ive joined, one environmental (sierra club) and one for the community (rotary club). {Side question: Which do you think pharmacy school admission committees place more emphasis on: leadership or community service?}

no pharmacy experience other than shadowing a branch of pharmacists when i went home to the city during spring break last year.. i am in a small college farmtown with one pharmacy (not a walgreens; privately owned), filled to the brim with employees, volunteers, techs, so there's no chance of trying to go there for a useful experience.

i know you guys must think suicidal thoughts when a thread like mine appears in the forum.. i really apologize. but please answer truthfully, without joking since i am bad at telling the difference 😳

no offense, but your gap will be relatively weak against other applicants. your best bet would to gain pharmacy experience asap and apply to the small pharmacy schools. also definitely raise that gpa and basically murder the PCAT. [score very highly] :]

Wow. It seems like you got a lot of experience already for just being a sophomore. I know there are people like you out there that are solid and for sure wanting to be a pharmacist (myself included). But you know what? First of all, try getting a part time job at your local pharmacy pharmacy. You'll get a clear pic of how the pharmacy field is like (especially at Walgreens 24hr store (Damn the drive thru) hahaha....) and definitely something to talk about during the interview.. If you really want to get into school for fall 2006, then go ahead and apply to more than just one school. But if you don't get in this year then know that you're way toooooo young right now and you got time. I would just raise that GPA up and may be working toward a BS degree. That's my opinion. But what do I know.hahahah... I am still trying to get in myself (hopefully USC pharm School). Wish everyone who are applying the best of luck!!!

One thing you have going for your GPA is that you haven't taken so many credit hours that it would be impossible to raise it. You still have quite a few courses that could make a HUGE difference in grades. And yes the PCAT! Really concentrate on doing well in that respect. Take whatever experience you do have and make it sound awesome on your applications.
If you don't get in try again like me 🙂 You can still work towards a bachelor's degree as well!
Is there a hospital where you can volunteer in the pharmacy?
