Hello there,

Long time follower, first time poster so I figured i'd introduce myself since we all seem to come from various backgrounds and i'm curious if anyone has one similar to mine. Long story short, I am a social worker. I hadn't considered medicine until after graduate school when I began to work in more medically-oriented settings and became more interested in all of those nifty labs and numbers. Since graduating I've worked in different settings with a range of populations, most frequently it has been dealing with those who have psychiatric conditions or substance abuse / dependency. I think I still care a soft spot for dealing with addiction and dependency and would love the opportunity to further that in med school. In the later part of last year I finally got my LCSW and now am working in an inpatient hospital setting dealing with palliative care. I was fortunate in that while doing so one of my supervisors' husbands is a family med physician who was quite encouraging (and a non-traditional student as well).

Certainly many others have tried to balance the competing demands of school, work, and personal life, especially given how social work tends to cozy up more so to the soft sciences. Comparatively I don't how some people do it so kudos to them, but I have no kids, am 30, and reside with my supportive girlfriend of several years. I'm chipping away at them via evening classes at community college and my have to eventually take a few online based on reconciling it with my work schedule. I figure enough diligence with that and some intense MCAT studying as I get close to finishing in about a year should be a good combination. It'd be peachy to hear from others falling into that non-traditional niche about where they came from whether it is similar or varied.

There are a fair number in your same shoes, and social support is key. I'm 35, applying this cycle with a 3.9, taking the MCAT 1/28.

I took online courses through UNE and it was a huge mistake. Most MD don't accept, the intrinsic quality of most of them is very low, UNE's grading is bizarre.

That's good to know; I had contemplated taking those same courses. Going CC all the way or at least most of it will take longer, but I'll stick to that all things considered.

Welcome, tell us the stuff we need to know, most importantly GPA, so you can start getting some advice on how to proceed.

Certainly. I have never taken the MCAT so I don't have any numbers in that department. I have a 4.0 currently at the community college, have taken Bio 1, Precal 1, Precal 2, and nutrition. I'll be taking physics and Bio 2 starting next week. Grad school I had a 4.0 in an accelerated / advanced standing program and worked as a research assistant. Back when I did undergraduate (completed 2010) I was less diligent, but not awful as I had a 3.5 cGPA. I'm banking on the maturity factor and improved grades since that time assuming I keep up the trend in knocking out the pre-reqs and have the graduate school grades to supplement them.
