Until this cycle, the AOA match, excepting fast-track or tracking internships, ONLY matched you into your internship year. Acquiring a residency slot was a completely independent process with no formal match. You simply, or not so simply, applied to each individual program, interviewed and were offered/not offered the slot.
Fortunately, the AOA has seen some portion of the light and is now revamping the match process such that you will match into both internship and residency programs...beginning this cycle <class of 2002>.
