since when did this become enough to understand where you stand, how about the other important parts of your score?

Assuming no individual score is less than 17 (well math might be exception).... I think you have a good shot.

I'd aim at 10+ schools.

50 hours combined?

How long have you been a pre-dent?

50 hours combined. But this is the one I have done continuously for an year at a clinic near school. I have done medical community services at several other places too. If I combine them all I would have 100+ hours.

you have time, try to get your shadowing numbers up a bit. it is not NECESSARY , but it won't hurt.

Thanks.
But there isnt much time until I apply on June 1st anyway...
How about my chances overall? I know my GPA is a weak point...

your chances are good. What schools are you planning to apply to and what state are you from?

I'm from Maryland.
I'm applying

Univ. of Maryland
Boston U
Tufts
NYU
Columbia
Temple
Penn
Pitts
Univ. of New Jersey
Case Western
OSU.

I know they're tough schools...hm

I see thank you for your replies.
I would love to hear more opinions from more people!bump!

How many shadow hrs should one shoot for? I have 100 assisting at a free clinic (have worked with OS, general, peds, perio) but I have only 25 hrs shadowing in a privite practice. Will this be okay?

some schools require 40+

So I need 40 shadowing on top of all the I have assisted? Has anyone ever counted volunteer hrs or assisting hrs towards the "shadowing" requirements that school place on applicants?

Yappy, get out of my thread and ask that question elsewhere.
I'm looking for my chances here.

They already told u about your chances. I like how u asked Yappy to get outa here 😀

Shadowing hrs were brought up and I developed this thread by asking additional questions. If anything you should be thankful I kept bumping your thread for you. No, I will not get out of here.

Your gpa and dat seem competitive. If I were you I would consider midwestern or any of the new schools opening in 2012 to your school list.

Add these schools to your list:
Midwestern-AZ
Western University (CA)
OHSU
Indiana
UNLV
Nova
Oklahoma
USN

They are all out-of-state friendly or private schools. Since your GPA is average, I would definitely apply to all of them.

Also, as far as shadowing goes, on AADSAS, you can forecast how many hours you will get during the upcoming year before you matriculate into school.

Do not add OHSU, they aren't out of state friendly outside of WICHE.

OHSU IS OOS friendly. There are at least a dozen people from my state that interviewed/were accepted there (we are not a WICHE state). They are also adding more OOS seats to bring in more revenue for the school, so they are becoming even more OOS friendly.

I loved OHSU. My only hesitation was that they are increasing their tuition at a huge rate year because of budgeting issues. The school is great and Portland is an awesome city.

The issue is that I want to stay in the East...since my home is in Maryland 😛 hehe but when it comes down a situation where I can't help it...oh well 😛
