I was really set on going the MD route, the stigma attached to the DO, I did have. But then the sea parted and while messing around at the hospital I met my hero, the coolest and bestest doc ever, I talked to him for quite some time and turns out he is a DO and explained much to my young ears. Anyways I am turned on now and was wondering if there is some average stats for people that get accepted to DO schools. MD is my back up choice now....

I used the search function and couldn't find it, but I am sure it is here somewhere. Please make me feel dumb.

Just to clarify they all say 3.5 and up with around a 30 MCAT for MD programs you know....so what are the averages for DO programs....if anyone knows.

Just off the top of my head: Around 3.4 GPA and 26-8 MCAT.

No statistical significance, but I'm pretty sure I'm right on.

More like 24-27 mcat.

My class at DMU had an avg GPA of 3.5 and an avg MCAT of 27. It's been climbing, the admissions dept says they expect it to be higher after the construction is complete at our school.

Just as a side note I rember it being posted in here somewhere that the avg GPA and MCATS were higher at Oklahoma State U College of Osteo Med then at University of Oklahoma.

This is, in fact, true. Our school (OSU-COM) has been admitting a higher caliber of student (numbers-wise) than OU for the last three years. Our class (of 2006) had a 3.6 GPA and a 28 MCAT. Not great, but when you consider that pretty much everyone in the class has a 26-28 MCAT, with a few 30+, that is above the national average of MCAT takers, by a decent stretch.

On the whole, however, DO schools are less numbers-oriented, and more people-oriented. Here we have several students who turned down good allopathic schools (I did!) for OSU-COM.

I know people with 22 MCATS and people with 32 MCATS at my school. UHS-COM average is around 25-26 MCAT and 3.4-3.5 GPA.

Go to www.aacom.org for more information on school specific stats and details.

It varies by school, but in general stats are misleading and often don't tell you very much. It truly is individual. Ive heard of MCAT 19s at Harvard and MCAT 40s at TCOM and vice versa. Same with grades.

Do your best--don't aim low. Really, if I can convince you of one thing: put "stats" out of your head. Instead, put that head down and study, volunteer, be a good and interesting person, and you will get offers.

Good luck.

3.5 and 30 for MD programs is a load of you know what. I can't tell you how many people I knew in undergrad who were accepted to competitive MD programs inTexas and beyond with MCATs in the 26-29 range, and GPAs in the 3.4-3.6 range. That magic number 30 is a MYTH propogated by companies like THE PRINCETON REVIEW so they can get more hungry pre-meds into their little cult....

I am only half-kidding.

I think the idea that MD figures are higher is a myth. I personally know many friends who enter into MD schools with MCATs of 22, 24 and 27 with relative GPA of 3.4-5. I also know of a guy (son of a family friend) who went to yale with 26 MCAT but with a 3.7..GPA from Havard. I guess What I'm trying to say is that the figures are about thesame for both MD and DO schools for the most part especially at the not-too-known MD schools. All the high figures are probably only true for schools like havard, duke, hopkins e.t.c.

As Idiopathic already said, this is true. OSU's 3-year average is 3.6 GPA, 27 MCAT, and a 98% board pass rate. (these are the actual stats from the school, not numbers I'm coming up with)

sorry but since your stating that OSU has higher numbers shouldn't OU be listed as well? From OU website:

"Students admitted to the freshman class, entering in 2000, had a mean grade point average of 3.69 and a mean MCAT score of 9.61" ~28.83

I know that is an old class' stats and that your information is for the last three year, so here is what I pulled from US News:

OU
GPA
Average undergraduate GPA: 3.67

MCAT
Overall score (composite): 9.4
Verbal reasoning: 9.5
Physical sciences: 9.2
Biological: 9.6
Writing: O

OSU-COM

GPA
Average undergraduate GPA: 3.58

MCAT
Overall score (composite): 8.8
Verbal reasoning: 9
Physical sciences: 8
Biological: 9
Writing: O

Again I do not know what year this info is from or how valid it is, but I thought it would only be fair to list OU along side OSU-COM.
By the way I am applying this year, and OSU-COM is by far my top choice, I just want them to want me. 😉

fair enough. I don't know when your data is from either. Here's the background of the info I have. OSU has been increasing its stats over the past few years.

My statement about OSU having higher stats than OU (from a post a number of months ago) came from a statement from the admissions office regarding my class alone.
