I love to cook when I have the time and when I do it is preferrably using a grill.

With the popularity of the Food Network and other cooking shows, I think that careers as a chef have been glorified. You can kind of think of it like the popularity of Medical TV shows.

ohhhhh snap...I love to cook.

I like to cook:
1. Thanksgiving dinner...you know...cornbread dressing, THE REAL macaroni and cheese that has been baked (none of that fake stuff), candied yams, string beans, 7 layer salad, of course a big turkey, creamed corn, sweet potato pie, apple cobbler (this is a once a year thing with the fam or w/ friends)

2. baked chicken in a simple white wine reduction sauce

3. baked/grilled chicken w/ a nice creamy shallot and chardonnay sauce (don't cook much b/c it too fatty)

4. orzo pasta with sauteed spinach and bell peppers...if I really want to fatboy it up then I can add some bacon and a little bit of asiago cheese (but I don't do that...only did once...it was good though)

5. prime rib topped with a red wine reduction

6. Turkey spaghetti (I cook this alot b/c it is easy and pretty healthy) with smoked turkey sausage (sometimes). I want to learn how to make my own sauce

7. red beans and rice with smoked turkey leg and turkey sausage

8. traditional gumbo (is actually hard to make) w/ good ol' texas sausage, chicken, shrimp, and crab legs (usually King or Blue)

9. Broiled Fillet of flounder/Sole

10. BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, hot links, baked beans, potato salad

11. chicken adobo

Geez coral I'm hungy now!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea... becoming a chef is often not as glamourous, as the FN shows. I have a lot of friends who went to the Culinary and now they are working their butts off for someone else's vision (many seem to have ended up working for banquet halls at hotels).

That said I love to cook and am a bit of a yuppie when it comes to kitchen gadgets (I even worked @ Williams Sonoma for a month). Daily, I tend to stick to Italian/Greek/Other mediterranean/middle eastern, as I generally stock my kitchen with such ingredients. O and Tex Mex.. mmmm

When I'm not cooking or eating, I'm watching Anthony Bourdain. I love that guy.

I love cooking. I'll make just about anything. Cook's Illustrated supplies me with recipes, they ROCK!

I love Cook's Illustrated. They're so scientific. I made their shrimp tikka masala the other day and it was awesome!

Alton Brown is a genius.

Genius.

I can throw down a little bit. I don't cook a lot of vegetables or pasta. I'm a meat kinda guy.

I'm a beast on a bbq grill, everything from ribs to BBQ salmon.

I love fish so I cook a lot of baked or broiled salmon, and I fry a lot of catfish and random fish that I catch.

Also, I like to smother turkey legs. They are pretty cheap and if you cook them right, you get a lot of bang for your buck. I also cook neckbones and oxtails as you get a lot of bang for your buck with those too.

Lastly, I can make a mean curry... anything. I rabbit hunt so I like to curry that.

whos your favorite tv chef?
mine is de Laurentiis
I learned a lot a lot from her

I also like Paula too
I feel my heart stopping just by watching her food

I've started to dislike No Reservations. I like traveling and I like food, but it seems to me like they focus too much on the weird/obscure society within any city and not enough on the food and tourism. In the Germany episode, they barely even spoke about food (other than doner and bratwurst) and spent a bunch of time talking about east/west Berlin. that's boring.

I like that he doesn't talk about tourism. Travelling is much more fun when hanging with the locals and not falling into the "traps".

well, I like traveling because I like the food. a lot of the time his show doesn't even focus on food. it's like an afterthought.

i guess i could see that.

it's refreshing to see that he focuses on the "everyday" though as opposed to the "let's go to this 4 star restaurant so we can feel fancy" type experience.

Yes...Alton Brown is dope!!!!!! He is not fat, but has some fatboy tendencies when it comes to preparing food. That guys does not play with the butter and oil!!!

You know, I also kind of like The Barefoot Contessa. Her subdued haughtiness is amusing, but her recipes are pretty easy to follow.

Giada is just some wonderful eye candy....THOSE EYES...geez Louise...(haha that was kind of dorky)

Do you guys remember the old school Iron Chef in Japan. They used to cook some of the craziest things! I guess you can say my taste is just not that sophisticated

I loved Iron Chef in Japan. they ruined it when they brought it to the US.

do girls usually fall for that "your eyes" business? cuz I'm sure not staring at Giada's eyes..

I've spent a lot of time in Jamaica, and I found his assessment of culinary life there to be incredibly accurate. What's so great about food is that you cannot separate it from the greater cultural life, the two are totally intertwined. That's the whole point of the show.

Anyways, Gordon Ramsey is another of my culinary heroes. I'll never have skills like that.

I felt the same about the show where he went to Ghana. It was an incredibly accurate portrayal of West African food and culture and minus the people speaking English could have been Cameroon (where I lived for 2 years).

:laugh::laugh::laugh:
Yeah...it's her eyes among many other things. They definitely get her to wear tighter close than many of the other female chefs. She is hot though!

One of my best friends graduated Stanford with a 3.7 GPA in biology/history. She then went on to attend baking school and is now an aid at a bakery.

You guys should do that! Pay for med school AND feed your family by working as a sous chef during med school =)

I watch The Food Network just to stare at Giada.

really? i think she's broad shouldered, thick in the middle with a small chest.
Yea.. she's not totally hot, but at least she is normal looking. I think Padma Lakshmi from Top Chef is the hottest culinary babe (though I don't know if she can cook).

What an awesome thread. Closet culinary aficiando here. I have to say that while Giada is a looker, something about Rachel Ray just exudes friendliness and approachability.

Also, I know that people peg him as a sellout because of his frozen food endorsement or whatever, but I like Rocco Dispirito's style of cooking.

Also on that note, I despise Emeril - no real chef has a live band playing on his/her show.

ever been to one of Emeril's restaurants? he's no joke.

I can't stand Rachael Ray. I love the shows with the former Double Dare host (I can't remember his name at the moment) where they look at all different types of food and their origins. Iron Chef is pretty sweet, too.

I've been on a gazpacho-making kick lately. I often make a lot of Italian food, too - my mother passed down recipes from my Italian grandmother. And I bake a lot when I'm stressed ... but I hardly end up eating it and I end up giving all of the food to my family and friends.

I ate at Emeril's restaurant in Universal Studios. I waited until 9 PM to eat (it was the only reservation we could get), and it was totally worth it.

Not a joke, per se, but more of a chaff or a chuckle at best.

Just because he's good in the kitchen doesn't make him good in front of a camera. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to eat his cooking. I just can't stand to listen to that man for more than 5 minutes at a time.

I have a similar story albiet with less star power. I ate at Casey's (from Top Chef Season 3) restaurant and got to meet her after the meal. It was awesome.

I actually was thinking about going to culinary school for a year if I didn't get accepted anywhere. I think it would have been fun, especially after living off frozen food for a majority of my undergraduate career. Would have made interesting interview conversation too I think.

I like to cook, but LOVE to bake!
Used to watch the old Iron Chef too! It would come on at 2 am or something and I would watch it when I got off work.
I am definitely addicted to cooking shows!!!

Anybody a Top Chef fan?

I cook dinner for Shabbos every week since my girlfriend doesn't get out of work until after sundown. I like to mix it up and don't typically cook the standard Shabbos meals that everyone is familiar with (unless my Rav is coming over, in which case I will try to make it somewhat "normal" ).

If it's going to be a dairy night, I like to make a ceasar salad with french and ranch dressing (the former for the g/f, the latter for myself); a challah with a variety of dips--usually a mushroom dip and hummus; either ravioli, tortellini, or 3-cheese baked ziti; and then some ice cream and two-bite brownies for dessert.

If it's a meat night, it really depends on the mood. The challah is obviously still there, but I might make baked or roasted chicken with mashed sweet potatoes, or it could be turkey. It really depends on the night.

The only other things I can make are eggs, grilled cheese, and Eggo waffles.

If Paula Deen is not cooking with a stick of butter or cheese, it's a sad day 🙁

any recipes to share for us with the mushroom dip and hummus? I love hummus 🙂 I can't find tahini anywhere though!

I 😍 Food Network, eating, and thinking about what to eat.

I sometimes joke that if I wasn't going to be a doctor I'd go to culinary school to try and be a professional chef. haha.

My pet peeve: IMPROPER KNIFE TECHNIQUE!!
'nough said.
And here's a good book:
