Just wanted to start a thread for the men and women in uniform that are applying this year, or current dent students for that matter (can't be too many of us). Throw down your service, OIF/OEF, job (MOS), where you are applying (or attending), Stats and any thoughts your brothers and/or sisters in arms might appreciate. Good luck Soldiers, Seamen, Airmen and Devil Dawgs.

Me? U.S. Army, OEF IV, Apache test pilot (152F) 12 yrs in.
Applying to: ASDOH, UNLV, LLU, UOP, Baylor, San Antonio (I'm not a Texan), Nova, Creighton (RDEP), and Louisville.

Thought I'd throw down with yea and give a shout out to all wearing the BDU's! USAF 11 yrs former Air Trans (Ramp Tramp), then got my Butter Bars as a nurse, applying to Dent school in 07 for 08 cycle. Being a non-trad pre-dental student I say, stay in the fight and live your dreams. It's never too late to do it.

DAT: NOV
Applying to: ASDOH, UNLV, LLU, UOP, NYU, HOW, and a few others.

Not as many as I thought there would be or they just don't give a crap about SDN. I guess we are a rare breed.

Airman right here...United States Air Force...served 6 years active dental assistant and now the last 2 years as a Air Guardsman (dental assistant). I've been predent forever and finally applying this year because I don't have to deploy again...whoot whoot!! So I'm hoping I get in somewhere so I can start dental school before I get deployed again..then I can be released. Oh yeah, I just finished my paperwork for the Air Force Scholarship so I hope I can get that if I GET IN somewhere..

I might have to take the DATs again in December. Just took it last week and got 17/19/19. Not sure if that acceptable...have tons of dental experience, humanitarian, traveled the world, volunteer, and you know how that goes when your in the military. I was a supertroop..LOL...went above and beyond...LOL J/k

It's very emotional to see veterans striving for our dreams. Alot of us have been through alot of things in life. I know I have seen alot of different things being in the military and makes me a determined person.

Good luck to all of you!! Stand by...LOL

I served 9 years in the Marines, part active, part reserve. Served in Iraq in 2003 during the invasion.

I will be applying to all Texas schools. My top pick right now is Baylor. So how much does prior military experince help out? I served four years as a Navy Diver/E.O.D technician. Since I disarmed bombs for four years, I know I will nail the "hand dexterity questions."

GPA 3.59
DAT In progress
Major: Neuroscience

Texas schools such as san antonio loves military...most of the docs I worked with in the military always said, "apply to san antonio".....most of the staff are retired military

Ya, thats what I heard also. I am not a texan but I'm applying to the ol' San Antone and Baylor. Hope they like military enough to give a seat to an out-of-stater. Sometimes I think those texas schools would rather give the seat to one of their steers over a non-texan. Sure it will cost a bit more to apply to a school that is a long shot, but if you get in, the tuition for all four years will be less than one year at most other schools.

I am not a combat vet but I did 3 years active duty with the 101st before going green to gold. I plan on applying for the HPSP and probably retiring from the Army. Anyone else?

I'm not in the armed services. I just wanted to give a shout out of much respect to ya...Good luck with everything!

I am thinking hard about the HPSP. I have 12 years in already and after d-school and a 4 year commiment, retirment would be just around the corner. If I go to an expensive school then it will be realy hard to turn down. I have worked with some military dentists and they are stress free. No worries about filling a schedule, running a practice, not getting paid by a patient or any thing like that. Just do your job and go home to Mama. Paid vacations, great equipment bought by Uncle Sam, hard to turn down. Of course yo0u are not going to be filthy rich like some dentists are, but you are definetly comfortable and have time to play.

I'm not in the military but one of good dental friends is. He actually switched branches when he started dental school. Apparently, the Navy right now is counting your years of dental school towards retirement. So if you signed up with the Navy you would have your 12 years of active duty, 4 years of school, 4 years repayment and be drawing retirement when you get out to start your own office. Pretty sweet deal if you asked me.

I could be wrong, but I think the Navy is the only branch offering that right now. Thought you might want to look into that.

3 years in active Army as 19k(Tanker), currently 2nd year in reserve as 91E(Dental Assistant). Well...91E is boring...I missed tanks.....but want to be dentist..😀

Applying:NYU, VCU, Stony Brook, Temple, Tufts, Penn(thinking!!!), Maryland

3.4/3.6
DAT: retake in NOV, totally messed up in first one!!!!!!!😱

Yeah, its the Navy does have a program called the HSCP where you get paid as a active duty e-6 and the 4 years of d-school all count for retirement. Pretty sweet deal if you get into your instate school. I''m in the program.

hats off to you all bros/sis's. I am a army dentist serving OCONUS.
some of you have very good GPAs/DAT. way to go.
one word of advice: you stand a much better chance of getting into your own
state's dental school (hope your state does have one) if you already have
semi-decent stats. HPSP is definitely a good deal. Why?

besides the obvious financial factor, during your payback obligation years, if you think of applying to specialty programs, the army ones are much less
impossible than their civvie counterparts to get into: i am talking about
OMS, endo, pedo, ortho, although the last two are still quite competitive.

good luck to you all. hooah.

I spoke with some of the Navy recruiters to see if I could retain my rank as a Warrant Officer instead of an E-6, but they said they havent had that situation before and I am waiting for more info from DON. The recruiter didn't act too optomistic though. That would be sweet if I didn't have to go back to E-6 again.

USAF right here ladies and gentlemen!!! 6 years!! I was a IMer and then cross trained to dental. Deployed twice to Iraq and been everywhere else all over the world.

I was one of those super troopers too!!! Honor Guard member of the year!! NCO of the quarter for 3 quarters in a row!! Humanitarian metals and then some!!

Believe it or not, dentals schools are really interested vets!!!

What bases were you at? I was active 6 years too in USAF...maybe we know the same people..😉

I'm a D1 at UNC and was a Navy pilot in my "former life". I'm not on the HPSP, I separated and am just going on stafford loans. Best of luck to all of you applying. I think you'll find that with some prep work you will do very well on interviews. We all have plenty of interesting experiences to talk about!

Good to see another pre-dent with wings. What did you fly in the Navy? Were you a fixed or helo guy? As a kid I was into Hornets, but then decided I wanted to be lower and slower and closer to the fight, so I got into Apaches. Hard to believe we are leaving that life behind. We won't find near as much adrenaline in those mouths, but we will find a bit more green.
