Any EMTs out there?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A lot of schools have student-staffed EMS. They might be able to tell you where you can take the course?

Im an EMT, and let me tell you that unless you want to get your paramedic or atleast intermediate, it is hard to get a good job. Most of the Job basics are hired for are basically transport trucks, But I volunteer and love it. I get to see and do so many things. My advice would be if you ahve time get your paramedic if not, deal with the fact of either being stuck driving or doing transport calls, and get on a busy volunteer squad, we run probably on average 15-18 calls a day

You'll need to take an EMT-B course at the minimum to be certified.

EMT regulations and scope of practices vary from location to location. I'm currently living in SoCal so I’m not sure what the rules would be in other states. Still, I picked up my EMT and then knocked out my phlebotomy license so I could get a job working in an emergency department. I love my job! Some of the time is spent doing grunt work (transporting patients, stocking linens, etc.), still most of my time is spent providing patient care (splinting, drawing labs, doing EKGs and working on traumas).

Working in a hospital instead of on a rig has provided some other perks too. Most of the docs in the department know that I'm applying to med school and will pull me in to see some procedures, or will try to explain things to me while they're working. I get to see all kinds of patients...and the money is significantly better than what I'd make working on an ambulance.

Hospital jobs aren't easy to come by...but if you ever have the chance to get one I'd say jump on it.

If you want to do it, do it because you want to, not because it will earn you lots of money, will be the best job you ever had, and will get you into medical school. Because it won't...

I just got my EMT-B over the summer, and I'm loving it. I volunteer at a company that doesn't have an ambulance so I ride the engine 😍 What you'll be doing depends on the area you're in, etc etc. Most jobs for EMTs in my area are transport, which some people like, but most people hate. The people who love what they do (in my area, anyway), either volunteer or run emergency calls with a paid company since many of the volunteer companies don't have enough people hanging around during the work day to fully staff their apparatus (and thus hire people to be there during those times).

I was an EMT for my undergrad's volunteer organization. Most of the calls were kids who drank too much. If a student was in really bad shape (i.e. one student actually tried to take 21 shots on his 21st birthday) then we would call the paramedics. Overall I think it was a good experience. Unfortunately I never kept up with my CME hours so now I have to start all over again if I want to be an EMT.

I do it for the chicks. 😀

Hopefully they're more attractive than the usual chicks who talk to me while I'm buying food/drinks at AM/PM... 🙄
