Hey everyone,

I was hoping you sdn folks can help me with my current situation. I'm currently applying for the 14-15 cycle and am in a gap year. Before I graduated I met with my counselor to talk about plans for the gap and she recommended I get more clinical experience ( 50 shadowing hours, 40 hours of free clinics in Mexico, 300+ hours as a basic hospital volunteer in highschool). I've been on turbo mode and have applied to many scribe programs here in CA, as well as free clinic volunteer opps and internships but have gotten very few responses :[ I have a back up plan for EMT cert but I'm scared I wont be able to be hired!

Anyone have insight or recommendations on what I should do? :\ Would more shadowing be useful?

Thanks!

50-100 hours of shadowing is good spot, so I would not focus too much on that. Scribe work will definitely be your best. Getting a scribe job can be difficult, but you have to be persistent and keep tryring.

Have you tried ScribeAmerica?

I don't think 300 hrs in HS counts... What about hospice? It is bit difficult but very rewarding

Not all clinical experience has to be in a hospital. Think clinics, Planned Parenthood, hospice or nursing homes.

Hey everyone, thanks for the help! I've been looking at your suggestions. As a side note, I was offered an AmeriCorp position in a rural area, the person contacted me and said our main focus would be on getting people to visit the dentist clinics more often and teach children the importance of eating right for oral health.

Only problem is, I'm not going to be a dentist lol.... Do you guys think it's still worth it to pursue? I mean, I'm still promoting a healthy lifestyle right?

^ not mainly clinical, but I feel like it could be a good experience to have an outreach to rural areas while also promoting healthy information and visiting (dental) clinics

I like it --

No - Just thinking that you may gain some very useful insights into rural health issues that will:
  1. Demonstrate altruism
  2. Provide lots to write about in your essays
  3. Be attractive to AdComs, and
  4. Give you interesting discussion points in your interviews.

Hmmm I see where you're coming from, it's sounding like THE option for me right now, thanks for the input!

Well now I got offered a Scribe position! :O , I think I'm going that route, although I'm going to have to move farther away and live alone :\ Guess I'll have to bite the bullet ...
