Hi everyone! 🙂

The title says it all. I could not find any threads in the pre-vet forum so I am asking here.
I have seen that about 40 applicants submitted their toefl scores last year and I was wondering if there were any international students applying to vet school or currently enrolled. My family is probably moving to the United States this summer and I was wondering about the chances for an international student to actually get in. I am a 22 year old French student graduating with a master's degree in Animal Science in the fall. I am planning to take online courses at Oregon State University until I move there as most vet schools require the prerequisites to be taken at an accredited american college.

I wish you all the best of luck for your admissions! :luck:

I won't start writing in French to be polite with all the other pre vet members.
The only thing I can tell you is that American University do not accept any french diploma for equivalency. You could take tests for some of the prerequisites to get through them. I know it sucks, especially when you have to retake all your organic chem etc.
Since your family is moving here, you will have to prove your residency to the school before you can register for their classes. Not a problem once you get your green card; but before that it is a game of presenting your visa every time it is renewed and sometimes it can be quite often.
Taking online classes is a great idea; some prerequisites require laboratories that you will not be able to take until you get here (organic chem is one of them for most vet school).
I wish you good luck; personally I am quite older than the average pre-vet student and had to retake every prerequisites. I let you know how my two interviews go in two-three weeks.
Wish me luck! "et n'oublie pas: ne perds pas courage!"

I would imagine that if you want to practice in the US, the easiest way to get a degree would be by going to one of the overseas AVMA approved schools in Europe like edinburgh or RVT or whatnot. As an EU citizen it will probably cost significantly less and I'd think you wouldn't have to jump through all the hoops with trying to get your french classes recognized.

Any reason you aren't trying to go in France? Just the entrance exams or you're planning on practicing in the US or what? Their schools are pretty good, especially in sciences.

La France me manque 🙁

Quantized > Edinburgh is a good school, but even for EU residents, tuition still costs over $150 000 so I would rather spend my money in an American school 🙂 Besides, I do plan to live and work in the US with my loved ones 😍 so I better start the journey now!
I tried to get in vet school in France once and made it into the 1st tier of applicants but it was not good enough (all French applicants pass the same exam: a week of written exams and, in my case, 11 oral exams 😛). I did not try again (although I would have had a pretty good chance as more than 50% of applicants who get in are 2nd timers) as my parents were already in the process of moving to the US.
To tell the truth, I have been dreaming to attend an American university for such a long time that even if it takes me a couple of years to get in, I believe it is worth it!
I hope (final interview at the embassy is coming soon!) to get my green card so that it will hopefully make it easier for me to find a job while completing the prereqs.

Maritxu > Yay a fellow French on this forum!!! It really sucks to do all the prereqs all over again. I enjoyed organic chem so hopefully that will not be a problem... I believe I already covered all the prereqs (and a lot more 😀) while attending prep school (classes prépas). It does not matter at all that you are older than the average applicant. I will probably be 24 by the time I apply 🙄. Truly love the positive (American) attitude : you can be [age], or you can be [age] and a vet. You'll be [age] no matter what.👍
That is certainly not a French thing!!
Merde for your interviews!! Which schools are you applying to?

Quantized > Which part of France did you visit?

Oh hmm. That sucks. Good luck then, but start getting ready to retake everything you already learned. On the bright side, you should find American school comparitively much easier.

I lived three years working at a jumper barn about 30 min west of Paris on the A13 - sort of near Vernon. I had to leave when they gave me a lot of problems over my visa 🙁 I then worked in Suisse for a while until they noticed I was there too long and so I've been back in the US for four years. I really wish I had an EU passport!
