Any news from the 2009 Applicants for UH-Hilo

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hilo is really not that expensive, especially in comparison to the rest of the islands and certain places on the West and East Coast. If you eat local products, food is relatively inexpensive. Also, while housing is high, rents aren't. Watch out for great deals, though, there's usually a reason. Also, some areas are uninsurable, even with renters insurance, because of the volcano. FYI, the vog has been increasing of late, so if you have respiratory problems, you may want to look at alternatives.

Anyway, whether my wife decides to pursue a PharmD or not, and regardless of whether or not she goes to Hilo, we will eventually be moving to Hawaii. I've done tons of research, and this Website is the best I've found for overall info on Hilo.

Good luck to all of you in your interviews, and maybe we'll see you in a few years!

Does anyone plan to bring their luggage or bag to the interview? My interview is at 12:00 and i am suppose to check out of my hotel 12:00. that mean i have to bring my bag with me. Does it look bad when you carry the bad or luggage to the interview?

I'm not, but that's because my interview is at 8:30.

Are you going from the interview to the airport? If so, you could leave it with Bell Service at Embasy Suites. If not, you could leave it with Bell Service at your hotel if you plan on going back to gamble or whatever. You have options.

I book my hotel at the best western inn. i will be in LV thursday night and the interview on friday at 12:00 then i will go straight to the airport after that. all of my stuffs in the bag so i don't want to leave if at the western inn.

I would rather leave my luggage at Embassy Suite than at Best Western. I guess you have the front desk person to watch it for you. You can always lock your luggage during the time when they watch your bag, you know...just to be on the safe side. 😉

How do you guys carry your suit to LV?. I just dry cleaning my suit but i don't have a big suitcase to put them in. I only have a tennis bag and i am thinking about using it. It probably going to wrinkle and i will waste my money on the dry cleaner. Are there any tips to keep my suit wrinkle free. if you guys see an asian guy with a wrinkle suit, holla at me ok.😀

Get a garment bag.

I got a confirmation email from Hilo Hawaii on Nov. 29th that my application is complete. I thought it was kind of weird because it was on a Saturday (Thanksgiving weekend). Maybe it was automated??.. Humm...odd..

Yikes! I just received an interview invitation!!! I want to pick the one in Los Angeles because I actually live here....but it says there are only a few spots available??? Anybody going to interview in LA between Jan. 8 to Jan. 10??? It seems like everybody picked Vegas instead.

When we picked Vegas, LA was not an option. That said, I'd still go to Vegas. But that's just me. It's a great excuse to go and gamble.

that's cause people that received the first rounds of interview invites didn't have the choice of LA (only LV, FL, and HI)...I know if I had the choice I definitely would have picked it since it would have been so much more convenient (cheaper)

Good luck to you all!!! :luck: Please post interview feedbacks after. It will be very helpful. Thanks!😀

I got an invitation too and I chose Los Angeles but I'll have to wait for their response to see if I can actually get my location. Otherwise, I'll have to go to Las Vegas. 🙁

BTW did anyone find it weird that there was something about how if you still haven't turned in your supplemental material yet, you should do that ASAP? I thought all schools don't look at your app until it is completely finished (i.e. PharmCAS app + Supplemental + Fee).

UH-Hilo would be a pleasure to attend. I applied in August, no interview granted so far, but NOT REJECTED either!!! Woooo-WHOOOO!

My situation reminds me of this part from Dumb and Dumber (I know you have all seen it!)

Lloyd: What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together?
Mary: Well, that's pretty difficult to say.
Lloyd: Hit me with it! I've come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
[pause]
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to everyone with interviews so far and acceptances (if there has been any yet).

I knew where this was going without reading any of the posts! Gotta love that movie!!!

for those who have interviewed or will interview on the hilo campus, does your plane fly to kona on the big island? If so, how far is the drive from Kona to the campus? Thanks.

anyone here know when is the latest interview time of the day? I already sent in the dates I want and waiting. I just want to book my flight early so I can save some money.

I have not yet been to hawaii, but I do know that if you are flying to visit Hilo, you will be flying into kona. It's on the opposite side of the island. I suggest getting a rental car if you plan on staying around a few days. Otherwise, your hotel might offer a shuttle ride.

It takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to drive the roughly 100 miles between Kailua-Kona and Hilo going along the Hamakua Coast route 19, while the southern Kau route 11 takes about 3 hours 30 minutes.

Hope that helps.

Is anyone interviewing today?

Is everyone ready for the interview? I still have to go to class at noon to take my quiz before I can catch my plane at 3:50 in the afternoon. Oh yea, for those who are planning to stay at Best Western, they have stopped running the complimentary shuttle to the airport. I called the hotel last night regarding the schedule and the lady told me that the shuttle only stops at the strip from now on.

my fly at 7:00pm tonight and i will be in LV around 9:00pm. I will stay at the Best Western. I probably eat at the hotel, and if anyone want to join, look for me in the dining room.

So is the only way to Embassy Suites taxi or rental car? If so, what's the best company to get the best fare? Thanks guys!

I'll be at the excalibur around 8pm tonight if anybody on the strip wants to catch a late dinner, pm your number or something

I land in vegas around 630. anxiety is setting in. I would definitely take a taxi. renting a car would be a hassel.

I just got back from my interview. :luck:

Hope you guys enjoy the interviewing experience as much as I did!

Good luck to you all. :xf:

wow.. how exciting! Too bad I won't get to experience it until Jan. Was the atmosphere relaxing??? Did they grill you on any specific topic?

Please take the time to fill out the interview feedback! 🙂

As you all know, I cannot disclose any information on essay prompts / specific questions asked during interview. Reading up interview feedbacks for UH-Hilo and other schools was tremendously helpful, I'd have to say👍

You should probably change your handle/username.... And I am pretty sure you can give out helpful information unless you signed something saying otherwise.

UHH had one of the least stressful interviewing sessions I experienced last year. They aren't going to grill you on your grades or anything like that, purely intent on getting to know you as an individual and if pharmacy is indeed the career you aspire to attain.

I have only spoken with these people over the phone and emailed them, but they sound really excited about their school. I think UHH is gonna be a hot spot in the next few years.

Hilo has an International Airport.

Oh boy, my interview is coming up in less than an hour and a half! Good luck guys! :luck:

I just finished my interview and it went great! wonder how long it takes to hear back?? anyone have an idea? Good luck cinnamoroll!

Good call. For some reason when I was doing a search for an airport on my local airline website, it didn't pull up hilo. I would hate to mislead anyone. Though I'm sure most everyone already knew about the Hilo airport and thought I was just being crazy.

Most flights fly into Kailua-Kona because it's more of a tourist destination than Hilo. Hilo's airport is TINY, and not a lot of airlines fly directly from the mainland to Hilo, especially since ATA and Aloha went out of business earlier this year. To get to Hilo, most of the time you have to fly into Kailua-Kona and then drive around the island (about a 2-3 hour drive)--or fly into Honolulu and then take a flight to Hilo. I took go! from Hilo to Honolulu for $50--but sometimes they'll do specials where it only costs $30.

I just submitted my application again for Hilo and turning in my supplemental this weekend. I guess I'm one of the few losers who actually got rejected from Hilo last year. 😀

my interviewed today in vegas went well. good luck to everyone, and does anyone know when we will hear anything?

federal aid is available for UH-Hilo or no? I think I heard that since UH-Hilo is established school, you can get federal aid. But pre-candidate means you have to wait till candidate status in order to know that you can sit for the NAPLEX

This has been answered many times, try searching. UHH is not in pre-candidate, they are in candidate. So there is no risk, if you complete pharmacy school you can and will sit for the boards.

Yea, I thought the interview process was relaxing, so that's great! Yea, I wonder how long it takes them to let us know if we get accepted or not. I got there early today and finished early because one person before my time slot canceled his or her interview.

PrepharmKID is trying to sabotage you guys. What an ass.

I'm not really sure how it went today. I felt like some of the questions were a little off the wall..and my interviewer was hard to read. But here's hoping for the best...I was told we'd find out in 2-3 weeks

Hahahahaha. Yeah. When you guys buy tickets on the airline site to the interview in hilo, use the search HNL. That'll get you to the interview no problem.

I thought the 2 questions that my interviewer asked were not what I expected, but other than that, the interview wasn't bad at all. He asked me about 10 questions before I had a chance to ask him questions in the end. Were there two interviewers at the hotel? I thought I saw a couple of guys wearing suits standing in front of another room on the other side of the floor (still on the same floor though). Oh ok, 2-3 weeks isn't that bad. Hopefully we will hear something before Christmas. :xf:

yeah there were 2 interview rooms about 5 doors away from each other. I think we had the same interviewer cause mine kept talking about how some guy canceled their interview earlier so he had time to relax. Hopefully it'll be a good Christmas present for us! :luck:

Yup, that's him. Haha, when I arrived at the room, I saw him through the window reading his newspapers on his couch. Can't believe I was that dumb, I initially thought that was part of the interview process because there was a sign outside the door that says "interview in progress" so I assumed someone else was in there. I actually thought I was going to get interviewed on the couch with him. So anyways, I sat on the chair outside waiting at the same time staring at him through the window, until he saw me and then gave me a smile.

I'm sure you had no beef with guys canceling their interviews since that just upped your odds of getting accepted. 🙂

I talked to some people while waiting for the interview to start, I had a grey suit and white tie. anyway, I interviewed with the lady and she was real laid back and nice. she asked me 7 concrete questions that all seemed to arise from the previous..

What interviewers did everyone have and what did you think about them? Were there any particular questions you asked that had an interesting answer?
