Hilo is really not that expensive, especially in comparison to the rest of the islands and certain places on the West and East Coast. If you eat local products, food is relatively inexpensive. Also, while housing is high, rents aren't. Watch out for great deals, though, there's usually a reason. Also, some areas are uninsurable, even with renters insurance, because of the volcano. FYI, the vog has been increasing of late, so if you have respiratory problems, you may want to look at alternatives.
Anyway, whether my wife decides to pursue a PharmD or not, and regardless of whether or not she goes to Hilo, we will eventually be moving to Hawaii. I've done tons of research, and this Website is the best I've found for overall info on Hilo.
