I was just sending up a "cyber-flare" to see who else is applying this season to see how they've been faring thus far.

I know that all international students are not created equal. International students with a green card/permanent residency will have way more options than non-immigrants like myself who came to the US to attend college. I've been told numerous times that I basically have a snowball's chance in hell to get in to any school which isn't the most encouraging news. However, I do have a few interviews lined up so far.

How are others doing? :hello:

I'm in the same boat as you. Applying for the 3rd time. Was waitlisted both last year and the year before. Good luck at your interviews. You seem to be doing just fine in the process.

Thanks! It is quite daunting to know our chances are so slim from the get-go yet we press on anyway.

Good luck with your applications this cycle! 🙂

non-greencard holder as well here.. it hasn't hurt me so far IMO. I was paranoid and applied to many schools.. probably more than I needed to. But better safe than sorry right? I feel like I've received a few invites at schools that aren't too friendly to intl's (georgetown, minnesota, and mount sinai for example) so far. So I guess from my experience, they haven't cared about my status. It never came up in the interviews I've had so far. Snowballs chance in hell.. no way! I consider myself a pretty average applicant, and I'm doing fine so far (10 I, 4 R). I remember your avatar from the interview invite threads trinitee.. and you seem to be doing well too.

Bozz, are you canadian ? A lot of schools treat canadians the same as US citizens. i'm curious to know what you call average stats..?

Well straight up international here with ok stats, so far 8 interview invites n attended 5 of them already and its barely october. So there actually is hope. Just curious tho, how many schools did you interview at that you got waitlisted both years?

holllaa straight-up non-green-card-holding non-canadian international here too. Apps are going okay I guess, with 5 interviews and 1 rejection out of 15 so far. Hope to get in somewhere before the end of October! ( :: crosses fingers :: )

We should keep in touch...

Holla right back atcha!! same here, non-green-card-holding-non-canadian-international-student-here lol. And ya I forgot to add, I got rejected from Georgetown, rejected pre-sec. from VCU.
And ya me too, hope to get in a couple of places by october. And applied to a lot more than 15 schools...at least over 22...

I think what concerns me the most is the possibility for funding assistance or financial aid since we don't qualify for federal aid. I originally wanted to apply to MD/PhD programs but gave that up since most of those programs are federally funded 🙁 Plus I figured I can still do research as an MD if I ever wanted to. Working with patients was more important to me than being in the lab all the time and going to conferences.

Yesterday I actually got an invite to Hopkins for next week! They said up front they don't offer aid to international students. Hopefully if I get in I'll have to do a whole lot of begging or pole dancing (j/k) to come up with the money. I had researched a couple loans that looked promising but then this whole "economic crisis" issue reared it's ugly head so I have no idea how things will work out once the dust settles.

I tried to get my green card last year but it fell through. After they first said they'd go forward with it, my employer then told me their policy is to get the green card for internationals who already have an MD or PhD. (Um, hello! That's what I was wanted it for!) Oh well. I decided to just bite the bullet and go for it this year and it seems to be going okay so far.

Good luck to everyone else. It'd be great to know how things turn out for everyone. 🙂

What's your stats? I am also from West Indies.

non canadian here
my MCAT is fine (above 35), GPA is average, and ECs are average

Hey just wanted to say hi. Some schools are definitely more international friendly: Columbia, Duke, Yale (which are just some that I think give aid to international students). While I am not exactly in your position, there are a handful of students in my class that are...so it does happen. Anyway once again GOOD LUCK!

PS:trinitee22, I love your screenname😀

Holla trinitee501! It is a great screenname isn't it? I love yours too.

I literally had to call a lot of Admissions offices to ask about whether or not they accept and/or give financial aid to non-immigrant internationals before I came up with the final list of schools to which I was going to apply. Unfortunately the state school in the state I currently live does not accept non-immigrants although I have lived and paid taxes there for the last 6 years! That suxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. 🙁

I've applied to a couple of the schools you mentioned and my best friend actually goes to Yale Med and she gets some financial assistance even though she's a non-immigrant international just like me. We'll see what happens I guess. Hopefully luck is on my side and I can get some aid or find some loans .I hope the same for others in the same boat as myself. :luck:

Look Bozz, I like you, I really do. But please, don't give me the "fine" nonsense. Your MCAT is in the 98th percentile. That's well above "fine." It's amazing, excellent, phenomenal, and superb.

Hello everyone. I'm also in the same boat as everyone else here. Getting into med school is extremely difficult by itself, and more so with the international student status. Trinitee22, could you be kind enough to share those final list of schools you came up with that accept and/or give financial aid to international students? Thanks.
Good luck to everyone.

OMG, you all sound like you are doing great, and I am cought in some depression-anxiety that I won't make it, I am even doing bad in my bio class because of all of this stress. I have a year before I am done wid undergrad and I should propbably apply in summer but my problem is money. I don't think I can get that much money...it is crazy....Ooo and I am all international and non-GC non-Canadian tooo.....Any tricks for international students to get money for MS???? Help because I will eather get sick or go crazy if I keep up like this.

MD ( yes they are my initials- How ironic?)😱

Hi I don't know if this thread is still alive, but stumbled upon it. I am also a non-green card, non-canadian international student and feel everyone's anxiety.

I was told by my pre-med advisor to "consider nursing school." I've gotten six interviews from pre-allopathic schools, and recently got accepted into one!! 🙂

so just say poo to those who tell you getting into med school as an international is impossible! Don't let them stop you, because if you want it then you will get it!

Good luck to all the international students out there!!

congrats! I'm having the same luck as you. I was told something similar.. and given a link to some website that said 1-2 internationals were accepted at each medical school annually or some nonsense (linked below).

To all other internationals:

**************Don't ever look at this website for reference**************

http://www.fiu.edu/~preprofc/International_Students_School_Policies.htm

***************************************************************

It's the first one that comes up when you Google "International Students Medical School" or something... my premed advisor also showed me something like this.

Instead use the MSAR and look at how many internationals are interviewed at each school. Many schools have international interview rates that are no different than U.S citizen interview rates.

just wanna know, what should be our mcat score to get into a med school?my current gpa is 3.6 but i can move it upto 3.8 atleast. Right now iam scoring(in practise tests) abt 12-14 in ps and 10 in vb and 10 in bs. Do u think i need to bump up my grades?

Hi everyone,
it's really great to hear that international students have a shot at US medical schools. In my case, i think it's a bit more complicated since my undergrad wasn't in the US. I'm about to graduate with a Masters degree from the US though, so i'm hoping that would sort of make up for it.

To you guys who made it to med school (congrts) or even got an interview (congrats & good luck):

do you mind sharing ur stats?
what you think made you a strong applicant?
and which schools did you apply to/got accepted into?

Thanks!

Is green-card holder treated the same as US citizen in medschool application?

yes, i'm a green-card holder and it hasn't even come up at interviews, i'm treated just like everyone else

Hello guys,

I just wanted to encourage everyone who is an international student and has been told that it is very difficult not to allow that remove you from your focus. I was scared myself but by the time I actually got accepted I received several merit scholarships from different schools giving me the opportunity to choose. There are a lot of schools out there that actually give money to internationals.

Good luck 👍

hi!

all this is really encouraging! I'm an international too and thinking of applying to med school in 2010. would someone post the list of schools that are international friendly or would provide financial aid to internationals? that would be a big help. thanks!

hey guys, i'm an international studnet, not a permanent resident. this is really STRESSING me out i'm doing my undergrad in the U.S and i had a bad semmester. hopefully i will try to raise my gpa by the time i graduate. but i know u have to b a genius to get in to U.S medical schools. what are my chances? what schools accept international students that are not complete geniuses?
god

Please don't post the same question twice. I've answered you in your other post.

Is anyone has the new updated list of med schools who accepts non-immigrant, non Canadian students.
It would be a great help if someone can can provide me with list of schools.

Thanks.......

That golden list would be much appreciated 😀

Hey trinitee, can u give me the list of schools which u have applied????
Thanks..

Buy the effing MSAR!!! There is no golden list; just look at the schools where int'l students constitute more than 3% of the enetering class.

PS. I'm an international student and you really need to get the MSAR to at least target the schools you're going to apply better

did high school in long island, currently at binghamton university. im getting discouraged because i don't know if i even have a chance.....gpa will be around 3.6. have 2 summers of volunteer in saudi arabia, 1 semester of interning in us, will have 2-3 semester of research in us, shadowed in philly for spring break, had an on campus job did the school play. if i get a 30 on the MCAT, what are my chances? honestly....I have to apply this summer, only found 10 schools that accept international students and that i realistically could apply to......sigh do i have hope or shud i....i dnt know whatever plan b is? 🙁

bump, how did everyone do?

A freshman in college right now, non-immigrant, non-greencard a little worried about my future here.

I have the MSAR and no where in there do I see the amount of international students matriculating in the school so I can't check if it is 3% or more. Where is it found?

I'm a resident or MD but not of the states. I'm assuming I can't apply to just any schools right?
