Any schools considering pulling students because of surging COVID cases?

I go to a school in a north east city and they just had a town hall saying that "as long as its safe and educational" they will be keeping us on rotations but, cases are rising and they didn't clarify when/what would not be "safe and educational" Also, some smaller sites that we rotate at have already cancelled. Curious to see what's going on at other schools

For a while at my institution students weren't on clerkships. This was in the spring when there was generally panic about what was happening. After a couple of months, students returned. We're in the midst of a "surge" in my area and we still have students rotating on our services.

I was waiting in line to get CoVID test done because we had a surge after fall break...overheard of other med students asking each other how was the party over the weekend...wtf? I wish “some” med students would be considerate and take precaution...unless you want to take a party over your learning opportunity (get pulled off clinical)...please wear your mask and stop partying lol....

The number of med students who are flagrantly disregarding CDC recommendations and have been throughout the pandemic is really disheartening.

We have had our major county hospital pull students so far. Kind of thinking a few others will follow suit.

On a zoom call with our clinical rotation coordinator person he said he is not pulling students no matter how bad it gets.
I suspect this will likely be the case at most schools for third-year. The multi-month hiatus really delayed many people's schedules (e.g., rotations, ERAS, the match, etc.). Having rotations be as close to "normal" as much possible (i.e. in-person) is compulsory to keep the pipeline of medical students being adequately trained and graduating and matching. I suspect many schools, students, and residency programs cannot afford to have students be pulled from rotations frequently/often or for a prolonged period of time.

Just came on here to post this same question. I'm not as nervous that my school itself will pull us (although it is definitely possible), but that hospitals will kick us out, especially for those of us who aren't rotating at our school's home hospital. The hospital I'm rotating out now is not allowing visitors anymore starting next week, so I am concerned they may end up kicking us out next.

I was about to post something similar. I have a feeling students won’t be allowed in hospitals in my area and my school will do what it did in June and just tell us to start rotations and do nothing to help us secure them.

Exactly. And we all know our schools won't let us move around rotations so that we can have the ones we aren't interested in online and not miss the ones we plan on going into for residency 🙄

A friend invited me to a party. Me and another friend flat out declined. Its 2020 ppl...our loved ones and patients are our priority. I could care less what happens to me but as medical students we need to be the most considerate here of all student populations

The number of RNs getting sick because of weddings and parties they all decided to attend is what's bothering me. They just changed the exposure policy for employees if there's a high risk exposure because of this. Now we all have to work if asymptomatic all because if they sent all the RNs home who had a high risk exposure multiple units would shut down.

Yeah it’s absurd. Come on people. It’s a ****ing pandemic. Having 50+ people at a bar is not smart.

They won't care. I think they should be criminally charged for endangering public health. Ignorance isn't the answer when covid 19 has been raging for nearly a year.

Wow i'm surprised your hospital was allowing visitors at all! Half of my day is spent trying to get visits approved for my patients lol. But yes I feel similarly. I start family med after thanksgiving at a small site in NJ and am nervous they're gonna tell us no sorrryyyy then I'll have to use a vacation block next year to make the time up.

I think we are essential workers. Not that we do anything important right now but part of getting used to the health system is getting used to the fact that when we are doctors, we won't have the option to be pulled from residency.

I agree with you. I don't think we should be seeing COVID patients, but I think it's pretty essential to our education to have in-person rotations.

Someone at my school mentioned some NY programs are pulling students from rotations - anyone know any more about this?

My school sent an email basically confirming what I already thought-- they have zero plans to pull us themselves, and we will only be pulled if a hospital refuses to take us.

My school's policy is med students plan to stay on rotations for the year, but don't care for covid positive patients.

I go to a school in NY. We got yanked in the spring for a few months and have been back since June. The admin said that we are now officially essential employees, and that they won't pull us again unless there's not enough PPE.

If there are PPE shortages students need to be pulled from rotation. Everything else is gray area. My institution has actually liberalized their policy and is allowing students to see COVID+ at their discretion. I disagree with this and forbid mine from doing so, but like I said, gray area I guess.

It’s amazing that any systems are letting students see COVID patients. Not because of the students... just because of the PPE. Why in the world would anyone voluntarily waste N-95s on med students when a lot of places are still rationing them?

My hospital isn’t even letting first year residents see COVID patients for the same reason. Since an upper level and an attending still have to go in, letting the interns go in is just wasting PPE.

We're only using n95s if they're having an aerosolizing intervention done
