So just wondering if there are any students out there who have less then a stellar GPA (below 3.5 and higher then 3.0) that also have received a MCAT score of 28-35 that have gotten any into medical schools in the US? If so, please describe what you think helped you get in as well as any advice you would like to share...

thanks

I think your best bet would be to search MDapplicants as this can give you a better idea on what these students with those stats had in common that granted an interview/acceptance.

my bro had around 3.4 and mcat of 33, got 3 acceptances, i think his research really helped him

Haha those are my stats exactly! Hopefully my research helps me as much as it did your brother.

well try to spin that doing a massive amount of research kind of led to a lower gpa I guess, he did have pubs to go with his research

I am the opposite, minimal research with good gpa so I am not totally sure about all this

I think your undergrad institution might affect how school's see your GPA. A 3.4 definitely is NOT low, but it seems that way when compared to a lot of applicants with 4.0. If your institution is known for being difficult especially in premed...it shouldn't hurt that much. And your MCAT score is great! So obviously you learned something in those hard classes.

yup, me.

one acceptance so far this cycle

@anonymousername- he applied last year, started med school this year

i guess the university name could have played a role as well, as he graduated form an ivy, not sure how much this matters since people have been telling me that university name doesn't mean much

I'm an upper middle class white guy (figured I'd preface with that since somebody will pull the URM thing). I had a 3.3 and a 27 and am at a US MD school.....So, it happens.

Hey MossPoh. what medical school did you get into? and what do you think helped you out getting in?

My friend had a 3.46 GPA, and 28 MCAT, got into a DO school. (Western)

MCAT -37

GPA - 3.9

7 rejections ( 6 pre interview)

0 acceptances

13 more application to go!
Didn't write anything down on my EC. Wanted to see if I could get in based on my stats 🙂

I don't get it. Are you serious about going to medical school?

You're either joking or you're a huge jerk, but I can't figure out which.

3.48/3.67 so my cum is below 3.5 and my science is above... 33 MCAT ... got an acceptance, no research

32 MCAT, 3.4 GPA

Still waiting, no rejections so far, but its already November and my only good news was one small pool : /

Hey MossPoh. what medical school did you get into? and what do you think helped you out getting in?

FSU, which was my top choice from the moment I decided on med school, so I'm very happy. What helped me? Aside from growing up in a rural area and living in a very rural area of Florida near the school, I was just a different applicant. I was also called off the waitlist, so it wasn't like I was outright accepted. Most people are science majors here...I wasn't. I also did two very tough study abroad programs (not just partying and traveling). I was active in a ton of things before I became a premed. I had strong letters of recommendation from people that knew me for a long time. I had a relatively strong upward trend. I also updated them constantly, hung around the school, stated my commitment to the school/region and genuinely believed in positive things happening. I'd often sit in the school cafe to study just out of the hope someone would see my face and recognize me during the little meetings. Also, while many people claim they have a strong personal statement, I KNOW mine was strong. When I buckle down, I'm a solid writer. In addition to that, I edited and re-edited it about 6 times with suggestions from a wide variety of sources.

If you have an MCAT in the 30s, unless you didn't do anything during undergrad or live in california, you probably have a fair shot somewhere if you apply broadly. Even though this was my top choice, I applied to 30 md/do schools. I only had interviews at 9 of them and went on 8 of those interviews. Only two schools were allopathic. It all seems trivial now that I have what I wanted.

Well 26 people made the worst possible choice with their money...

(26 people applied with 1.47-1.99 GPA and a MCAT between 5-14.

But one person DID get accepted with a GPA of 1.47-1.99 GPA and a MCAT between 15-17... 😱 Hardcore URM there.

That or they're GREAT in the sack.

I always wonder about those outliers. Its been show that anyone with a 21+ pretty much will be fine in med school, but when you are in the teens there is something beyond test anxiety going on.

This person was racially a mix of each of the URM categories i would bet.
