Any thoughts on best NYC IM programs

SUNY Downstate is a solid option.

I will be attending columbia so that is my source of bias and my disclosure thereof

with that said, I do believe honestly that columbia is the best program in NYC with cornell followed my mt sinai and then NYU (last two are pretty much equal) following in suit. After these many would consider albert einstein - montefiore to be the 5th best program. After that, suny downstate and other programs (community based) start coming in. I am basing this off of reputation during the interview circuit, resident autonomy in patient handling, the fellowship match lists (probably most important), USNR (the WORST ranking system ever, and lumps columbia and cornell together anyway) and relative competitiveness. With that said, you need to choose a program which will best suit your needs, and I know many people who chose not to choose columbia because the program is "malignant" or because they work harder than some of the other nyc programs. In the end choose the residency whcih will make you happiest. For me, going to the best NYC program in my opinion was more important that "lifestyle" during residency, so I chose columbia. I guess I will find out very soon if I made the right choice.

DrHeartMD, congrats on Columbia and best of luck in the next 3 yrs!

I chose to rank cornell over columbia in NYC, and matched there. I agree that from a national perspective, columbia appears slightly stronger that cornell in some areas, in particular cardiology. That being said, Cornell is by no means a "cush" program, its just a bit of a different style, and each offers their own unique strengths. Coming from a "columbia-like" medical school in terms of ancillary services and patient population, I wanted a more varied experience in my residency, and just got a better feel from cornell. I think something should be said for the gut feeling you get at a place. And strongly consider what fellowship you have in mind (even though you will most likely change your mind)... for me, Pulm/CC is where Im leaning, and am grateful that those two programs are pretty even in that dept. and overall it is not considered GI or Cards competitive.

Go where you feel you would fit the best when interviewing. I really loved all of the NYC programs, and deciding what order to put them in (once I decided that nyc was the geographic locale that best suited me at this stage in my life) was quite an agonizing decision, particularly between the two big Cs.

Best of luck to the OP! Enjoy 4th yr when you get to it!

Hey Phillystyl,

congrats on cornell and much luck and future success in your career path

Id like to clarify my statement...and definitely indicate that cornell is NOT a cush program...to be fair, i dont think any of hte nyc programs are very cush, and actually find they all have a very high work load...incidentally, I struggled with the columbia/cornell decision as well, and ended up ranking them very close together...in the end they are all great programs

incidentally, there are a few people on these boards who stated complete lack of interest in both c and c and ended up picking nyu over these programs or sinai over these programs, giving credence to how much personal fit means in this process...

good luck in your decision making and if u are still confused in a few months pm me and ill let you know how columbia is from an intern perspective...

Ditto with cornell!

DrHeart- I think this could be an excellent opp. for both of us to collaborate and demonstrate the differences between the two such that future applicants might have a better idea which is better for them.... concur?
