Hi there! I am having the same concerns as you. I was surprised at what a great interview day I had, and how happy the residents all seemed. Despite what I saw, I do have some worries about the intensity of the schedule, and stress of the residents. I am going to go back for a second look soon, so hopefully that will clear up some of my concerns. I will let you know if I have any more insight after my visit!

just curious, what made you think the program at Hopkins is more intense than other places? I didn't get this impression during the interview... did I miss something?

Hate to ever disagree w/Diane but that is not true. You (as most do) can live in Howard, Anne Arundel, or Northwest by Owings Mills for an affordable price. Commuting is not as bad if you go with the rail system and often the OB/GYN hours are blessing in that you all together avoid the usual Baltimore congestion.

I would direct my focus more at the program's make up in this case. Is the hierarchy system one that suits you best, as well as the heavy academic feel? The comparison to its rivals is a hard one as the Hopkins name is big. You do have UMD which is finally recovering from all of its changes few years back, and the smaller community programs like Franklin Square that lack the didactics... Bottomline, it comes down to what suits you best and what your future goals (if you know already) are.

Best of luck!

Ditto! We have 1/2 of our residents living in Downtown DC and the other 1/2 scattered around MD and VA.

If you guys match in this area, drop me an e-mail and I'll try to help you with the housing BS you'll inevitably face before June. Hope you all end up at your first choices!

Hi all - I have heard over and over about the "hierarchy" of the system at Hopkins, and I'm just not clear on what that means. Between the residency classes? Between attendings and residents? If anybody could shed some light on this, I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks 🙂

You may want to revisit your statement about Howard County schools as the facts are the opposite of wht you're saying. Last I checked it was first, followed by Montgomery and PG... but I won't turn this into a PTA debate.

I completely disagree with you. Your potential for getting rid of your debt (be it 100K, 200K, etc) is better at a more "pricy" town. For example, buy a condo in DC or MD, and sell after residency. Compare this to buying a condo/house in IN or NC. Which person do you think gets a bigger return on their money and has a better chance of using that return to pay off the debt?

I do agree with the latter portion of your post. I do think that our program's tradition of putting us in c/s from the first day, and OR on GYN cases is the biggest reason as to why all of feel so comfortable in the OR.

I am sorry if I offended anyone about Baltimore and I retract any prior statements. As an employee there has contacted my program director to say I was in error.
