I've been complete at PCOM (according to their secretary when i called) for 7 or 8 weeks now. Every other school has gotten back to me with an interview and some with an acceptance already. What is the hold up there?

same here.... I figured i would have gotten an interview or somthing by now. maybe stats are too high? make them think you wont go to them b/c of it?

I posted this previously in the PCOM discussion thread....

PCOM does not send out decisions based on when the applications were complete. They evaluate apps once a month and send interviews to the top candidates. Then they supposedly reevaluate the applicant pool the next month to send out more interviews. That process continues until april. It is possible that someone could be complete in September and not get an interview until the spring. I know a student there that did not get an invite until about 4 months after being complete.

Im not too worried about it now that I got my MSUCOM acceptance this week :hardy: . It makes me wonder if my essays or something else was out of wack. either way Id probly decline an interview if I got one at this point.

Good luck to all who is still hoping for PCOM though:luck::luck:

It's not an exact science. Sometimes, they just take a long time.

Heard from CCOM within two weeks.. but it took me 3 months to hear from PCOM. I was complete mid-october and received an interview invite for January 29th. Sometimes, a school will know right away that they want you... other times, they don't.

It never hurts to send updated transcripts, letters of intent, or letters of continued interest...

Finally, if you have a friend at PCOM, perhaps they can write you a LOR. The admissions office looks highly upon students that know you well writing letters of recommendation.

Best of luck!

I have been complete since beginning of September and no word from PCOM yet. Do they look at PA residents first or everyone get same consideraton.

Thanks for the advice Maximus, all I need to do now is find a friend in PCOM to write me a LOR... So will you be my friend 😀?

i heard the same thing from my friend who is there now. I'm almost sure it's a positive sign from most adcom's to get somewhat professional letters from people that know you well.

I am a PA resident... still took between 2-3 months...

I'll be your friend on SDN, but I think a good LOR would entail a whole lot more than that haha (sorry)

On the upside, your stats look about avg for incoming in-state students. I had a 3.2/3.05/32 but most in-staters had a lower MCAT that that. How are your LORs?

PCOM is a little different. I got an interview invite with MSU as an OOS applicant by Labor Day the year I applied, but PCOM couldn't be bothered to get back to me for an interview invite for over 6 months (and I grew up in PA, strong family ties to the state). Needless to say, I turned down the interview.

So I have no clue what PCOM looks for. But whatever it is, I didn't have it. But I had whatever MSU was looking for.

I have been complete at PCOM for a very long time. Like late summer and I still havent heard. Oh well, Im stayin close to family this way. 👍

Considering I am out of state, that probably makes it more harder for me due to my stats only being average. As for my LORs, I had sent in the Dean (letter of good standing) and the DO letter. My DO wrote me a real good letter. I have 2 science professors ones but I didn't sent them in since PCOM didn't require them. Do you think it will be good idea to send them in, I have them on Interfolio? I am assuming my science professor LORs should be good, I of course hadn't seen them.

my dean or advisors dont send letters to schools, so i had my adviser contact them.. they told me to turn in my whole portfolio of letters instead.

does PCOM really care that much instate/oos?

So basically, pcom philly thinks they are the ish and everyone should bow down and wait to go to their school or else they must not really want to go there. Understandable that they are a good school but they should be smarter than that. Paying to hold a spot is expensive and not interviewing good candidates in a somewhat timely fashion means you are getting late good candidates- which is a bad characteristic of this whole app if you ask me. One of the greatest scientists/politicians ever (Ben Frank) should've inspired a better system.
ps. I am experiencing the other side of that in state coin with nycom however so i guess i can't complain. Other state's schools are always so much more appealing though, aren't they?

No, that is not true. I have kids in my class with 30-34 MCATs. They are just really wierd and/or slow. They remind me of an allopathic school actually. You can never figure out their method.

heard nothing since august, no love here from PCOM.

Does it matter at all if you have a LOR from a PCOM graduate, not necessarily specific to PCOM?

I think having a LOR from a PCOM something helps a lot

agreed. I had 2 letters from PCOM grads. One is friends with one of the deans and from an informal meeting I had with the dean I found out that the other doc I know from the ER used to sit on the board at PCOM a long while back. So it could potentially mean a lot. So, if you know someone who went to PCOM, it's def worth getting a letter from them. I've heard they like to get reco's from alumni. And from what was said above, they also value the opinion of students as well. I have a friend that put in a letter for me as well.

I spoke to an admissions person a week ago since I've been complete for 2 months and haven't heard back. She stated that they really prefer PA residents or people who'll stay in PA/surrounding area to practice. I grew up in Cali and live in Hawaii. I'm a long shot, I think.

I dont' have them in front of me right now, but there is a huge discrepancy in percentages between OOS and IS applicants invited for interview... something like 40 percent of in-state applicants are interviewed while only 5-10 percent of OOS applicants are interviewed. After the interview invitation, however, the stats even out. Both in-state and OOS applicants have about a 60-70% chance of acceptance post-interview (includes those pulled from waitlist..)

That said, because there are so many more OOS applicants total, the ratio of in-state to OOS matriculated students is about 50:50 when all is said and done, if I'm not mistaken...

My stats are based off of a book I lookd over last year... I believe it was 2005 stats...

PCOM and I kind of have this love/hate relationship thing going on

I also have not heard from them...yet

I don't think a lot of people have heard from them yet which is weird because when I interviewed there, they told me they are doubling the amount of interviews. On the website it says all interviews are conducted in the morning. Mine was in the afternoon so I thought maybe they switched it. But I found out that they are having interviews in the morning AND afternoon so they can get more in. This doesn't seem to make sense since a lot of people are waiting on interviews. Plus, has anyone gotten a rejection and/or waitlist from them? PCOM-Philly is not even listed on those threads. Actually, even the acceptances thread for PCOM-Philly is a short list.

Sweet mother of god I hope I get in.

Been complete since August, haven't heard a thing.

guys, just keep following up every week or two and expressing your interest in the school.

Dear adcom,

How are you? My week is going pretty well. Oh, but I did order this delicious sandwich at Quiznos during my lunch break yesterday. That was nice. ::sigh:: Other than that it's been pretty much same ol same ol! Ok well have a good thanksgiving; talk to you next week!

Love,
Your favorite applicant

LOL

Classic...

P.S. Can I have an interview now? ...no? Ok I'll just keep waiting

The problem is, PCOM interviews most people from SDN last.:laugh:

I don't know what the hold up for most of you guys is, but I give tours for the admissions staff and they interview roughly 30 people a week. Hopefully you guys/gals will hear something soon.

I think they were the first secondary I submitted, and the last one that was complete. For anyone who applied to both locations, make sure you VERIFY on the phone that you are complete at both schools. Apparently I was complete at Philly, but not Atlanta b/c they put both copies of an LOR in the wrong file -- and I love Atlanta. Oh well. Such is life. 🙁

that is not true. i called pcom's adcom and he told me that they evaluate apps everyday, not once a month.

The interviews come in batches. They review applications everydaybut I htink final decision on all interviews are made at one time.

I am not really sure why everyone is having so much trouble with this school. 😕 I didn't send my primary apps. out until mid October, received my secondary apps. within a month and had an interview w/ PCOM on Jan 10th ( and got my letter of acceptance the 18th). I felt like the whole process was very expeditious. I guess the tx. i received confirmed my love for the school.

The physician I shadowed is a PCOM graduate. However, I plan on her writing a letter for both sets of secondaries. That being said, does PCOM look at the physician writing the DO letter to see if he or she is a graduate or would it be advantageous to have the physician directly write a letter to the school?

Also ... I wasn't trying to brag. I was a very average candidate due to my MCAT score. So I am just perplexed about the circumstances.

My lor writer was a pcom grad, my interviewer was his classmate. it always helps.

I think I can help with your perplexity. PCOM gets, by far, the most applications out of all the DO schools every year. This year I believe it was close to 5,000 application for ~275 seats. No wonder. 😉

I understand that, but that does not answer my question. 😳

personally, i don't know why it would make a difference. My experience in undergrad admissions is that when they open the letter, they don't keep or note where it came from, the letter will be a letter either way. i used interfolio and sent it through them myself.
