Anybody in med school in Cuba?

Hi,

Just wondering if the Cuban med school would be under Caribbean or under Latin America. I know there are North American students there...

I'm visiting Cuba in February and was looking for someone to hang out with/show me the school! I'm a Canadian MS1 who, while not fluent, can speak decent Spanish.

You can hang out with El Camandante Fidel and "El Comissario" Chavez when he drops by Anyway you shouldn't have much of a problem as a Canadian over there. For now just read Communist Manifesto, "Capital" by Karl Marx and Friederich Engels, and "April Theses" by Vladimir Lenin. You could also brush up on Dialectic Materialism, and The Foundations of Scientific Atheism as this would be very well covered in your Cuban medical school teachings.

And of course, don't forget "No Pasaran!" and Dialectical Materialism

You can hang out with El Camandante Fidel and "El Comissario" Chavez when he drops by Anyway you shouldn't have much of a problem as a Canadian over there. Geez people, it's not that big a deal. Canadians go to Cuba all the time. I'm just visiting and thought it would be interesting to see the med school (have heard good things about Cuban medical education). Sorry I asked.

Hey trustwomen! Never trust men j/k. I have my own bias when I hear ppl talk about Communist regimes. I was unfortunate enough to be born in the former U.S.S.R. and probably know about the "other", not so pretty side of these utopian government. I'm sorry if it came across as mean-spirited. I actually knew a few Cuban docs who were doing residency t beth Israel in NY in the early 1990s. But they were refugees, and natives of Cuba, who studied in the domicile Cuban program. The education they've got was not bad, but very basic, and USMLE oriented. Also I remember quite a few Cubans who studied in Moscow, and other Russian cities, but they had to learn and get tested in Russian first. I guess the schools in Cuba are either free (especially when you bribe the adcom well ). But I doubted that such "generosity" will be extended to you as a Canadian. First and formost you are associated with $$$$, and a shot at free prpaganda, b/c in "solidarity the Island of Freedom extends it's helping hands to the people who are so unlucky to know how great Socialism is, and live in the rotten Capitalist World". Of course, Castro learned his Marxism-Lenenism fundumentals well. He remembers that Lenin said.."we will hang the last Capitalist with the rope manufactured by him (the Capitalist). But if you plan to practice in U.S or Canada I'd strongly advise you against Cuban medical education, and not for, or not ONLY for political reasons. I'm sure you know about other options in the Caribbean. BTW, howcome when El Comandante Fidel got really sick, he is followed by the doctors from the "enemy" countries in North America, and Western Europe?

I should clarify; I'm an MS1 in Canada (McGill), and not looking to actually *attend* the Cuban med school. I just want to visit it for a day while I'm there. My education is already (almost) free. I will pay, total, about 20K (CDN) in tuition and fees for the four-year MD program.

p.s. I am under no illusions that Cuba is utopic, fear not. I know that there are some pretty atrocious things that happen there. However, when you look at quality of life there compared to other Caribbean countries - health care, education, and the basics of survival - they have not done too badly for themselves. You can't compare them to the US or even Canada, of course, but next to their neighbours they seem to be doing OK. (And one could argue that without the US embargo, they would be far less poor than they are.)

yes I do understand you are proud that you paid 20k for your medical education and I do hope you will be as proud of your income you will be paid as well,, that could be not much more than what you paid for tuition..

It is true that Canadian doctors are paid a bit less than US doctors - though not that much less. (It's not like European doctors, where the education is usually free but the doctors don't even make 6 figures). When you factor in the minuscule malpractice premiums up here, the salary differential all but disappears. Sorry to have to tell you this.

The real reason Canadian doctors have less disposable income? Income taxes. But I don't mind. I've lived in the US; it's much better up here. (That's just my opinion, of course.)

p.s. Quebec doctors do make a bit less than the Canadian average, unless they are in rural practice. But we still make a fine living, esp. considering the cost of living is lower. I have no problem making 200K instead of 250K.

I know doctors still do alright in Canada. I have some distant relative in North York, Ontario. I saw him last time back in mid 1990s when we went upthere for his dtr wedding. He is retired doc now, but definitely did quite well in his day. So good for you.

To the rest of the posters: O'k folks, we could use some civilized methods of communications. Let's play nice. We may have different points of view, and disagree politically, but keep it cool...please

NO matter how much you get payed....

In the great white north... you don't have to always live in fear that your patient is going to sue you. You don't always have to hope that the insurance company is going to pay you. Ohhhhh Yeahhh someone forgot about these two things which you will be dealing with EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Its amazing.. the first thing I was told in the US. "LEGAL ISSUES" Document everything. Hmmm I don't know. Which one would you rather live with. 250,000 in the US (minus high malpractice insurance). Or living in an ice house on a lake in the empty white north making 200,000 a year.

Again any americans studying in Canada that wish to trade places... please let me know. I will write the dean myself.

BTW, I don't understand the obsession some americans have with CUBA. It is a little $hity island that has no army and no threat (anymore). If it was not for cuba, a US prison (outside the law) can't take place. Canadians can go vacation there and buy cuban cigars with little fear of the old and weak fidel.

Drjj1, before answering to your comments I read some of your previous posts. Then I realized its okay. No need to answer directly to this comment. What I would suggest is you get more fiber intake. It will really help you in the long run. (I probably can benifit of more fiber as well.. maybe then I would not be such an A$$ .. read below)

BTW, "Ilegals" as you call them... are still human and still give you the right to learn medicine without the threat of legal action (i figure if I put it in terms that benefit you, you would be more acceptant).

BTW2, other health care providers will save your a$$. Cause they will make sure that you don't make stupid mistakes. And believe me you will. So it will be a good idea to have them on your side. PLus Nurses and PAs can make your life a living hell (again, terms you would benefit from)
