How do you work this out with your lab teachers etc.? My husband admitted he might want to take the rest of the pre-reqs he needs and apply with me to med school...wouldn't be an issue at all if he didn't randomly travel (not often but randomly) for work. Has anyone had any success stories on how they worked this stuff out with their lab teachers?

He has five pre-req classes to get through before end of spring 09, so we have to figure out a way for him to do this...

Most lab classes had a provision for making up a missed lab, but the number of times you could do a make-up lab was limited to 1 or 2 times max. Because, at my school, the organic chemistry lab sections were pretty much always completely full, there were no makeups allowed in that class (I wonder if that policy loosened a bit later in teh semester when some people probably dropped....) so it definitely depends upon the specific instructor/class.

Is he taking classes at night and working during the day?
Maybe his work can give him some flexibility and allow him to do some makeup labs during the day, if they are available at the school he is attending.

he should talk to the person who coordinates all of the lab sections for a given class and let them know his situation. If possible try to plan out his work travel schedule for a semester at a time. Then between the lab coordinator and his boss, figure out a way to make up the missed labs. I did a master's degree and half of my pre-reqs while at a job that included travel. Eventually it got to the point where my ability to focus on my pre-reqs was becoming a problem. I stopped working for a year to finish my coursework. If med school is something your husband really wants, an inflexible job and school should not get in the way. Changing jobs and/or schools might be the way to go.

If the labs and classes are not connected, maybe he can take them during different semesters. For example take Chem and Physics lecture one semester, and then take only chem and physics lab the next semester. For the "lab" semester, he would need to work out with his work that travel would not be possible that semster if it interferred with his lab classes. This would require some give and take with his work, but it's something to think about.

like someone said above, we were really only allowed to take 1 or 2 make-up labs on alternate days from the assigned lab days we were given. in addition, if you missed a certain number of labs, you automatically failed or did not get credit for the lab portion. i think if you missed like 2 or 3, you were done.

i think physics lab is the easiest to get through - we had lab every other week, so it was easy to attend and not miss any.

orgo is the most difficult as it is the most time-consuming and for us, it's a separate class you need to sign up for. they are also very strict about only having a certain # of people in the lab for each class, so even attending make-up lab would be really difficult.

my bio lab - i became good friends with my lab partner, so we were able to cover for each other when one of us were absent.

honestly, it would be such a terrible waste of money and time if the only reason why you don't get credit for a pre-req class is b/c you didn't make the labs. i would def try to see if he could offset all the traveling or perhaps cut his hours? good luck.
