I applied to the Tulane Cell and Molecular Bio program about a week ago. I was curious to who else has applied and if they have heard back. How long does it usually take to hear back? Do they email or send a letter in the mail? Anyone else been through this program? Thanks for all the help.

I don't know much about the programs. I have applied to the cell bio program and another SDN poster by the name of southerncomfort has very good things to say about it. I applied a few weeks ago and still haven't heard back from them. I visited N.O. and it is a great town to live in...Uptown anyway. But I believe that for the acp program you have to be waitlisted at a med school (not sure if D.O. school counts). And I think after the acp program is completed, there is a good chance of getting into med school from there. If anyone has anything to change or add, please feel free.

I applied and got my acceptance letter right away to both the Genetics and Cell and Molecular Biology Programs. Going to be matriculating at the Cell and Molecular program this fall, because a certain unnamed Liberal Arts School did a beating to my GPA in undergrad. I think they have not gotten my letters of recommendation from my stupid undergrad school. They are worthless...but I called and I have spoken to the dean and they seem positive about admitting me.
Where are you living? I just visited N.O. and looking to live uptown...though it is expensive I think I can make it working full time.

Although i have not taken the programs and am not applying, i am a Tulane senior and know some people in the programs. Typically getting accepted to many of the programs are not that difficult unless there is a dramatic increase in applicants. I know the professor who runs the Cell and Molecular program and he is really nice. Tulane is a great place to be and I would recommend the programs. The best program to get into medical school is the one affiliated with the med school, but it does require waitlist status at the medical school. The other programs help to, but have no direction relationship to the medical school. Lots of people also do the pharmacology masters at Tulane before med. school. I'm thinking of applying to the Cell and Molec. Bio program and ACP as well.

I talked to the lady in charge of ACP admissions. She said they have approx 50 applicants for about 14 spots, but waitlist status at a US med school is required before you apply. Apparently 90% of the students that complete this program get into a medical school.

Anyone else apply to the Pharmacology program? I applied to both the genetics and pharm programs because they are actually at the downtown medical center campus, and pharm program you take an actual med school course. I don't like the cell and molec because it is at the uptown campus and you take the courses with undergrads. All the course are really just undergrad courses there, I took 90% of those courses while a Tulane undergrad, and many of those teachers could not teach, although some of them were pretty good. But I personally know two people who went through the cell and molec program and are now almost finishing up medical school. Does anyone know the success rate of the other two Tulane programs (Pharm and Genetics)?

I actually just applied to the genetics program, it sounds really cool. My only concern with it is that a master's in human genetics might be too narrow and not as broad as basic medical sciences programs at other schools. It's not that big of a deal , i guess, since it's genetics (a favorite of mine) and all i am simply trying to prove to medical schools is that I can in fact handle a rigorous courseload.

I just completed my application and sent it in waiting for a response any day now. Even if I do not get in, I will probably take a few classes and work for a year to save some money, do some research, get to know N.O. a little better, etc.

I hear that the pharmacology program is fairly intense and have heard that some have gotten in to med school after doing the program. I think the advantage is that someone who has gone through that problem will also have a good pharma background with career opportunities henceforth. Though, a poster on an old tulane post said that the pharma program did not help with med school admissions.....perhaps they were not savy enough?

I am particularly interested in the cell and molecular bio program. The dean (who teaches some classes also) emailed me in response and said that he keeps in contact with the med school people to let them know of good prospects. I also like the discounted tuition and that I will have a better bio background.

There are also other programs there such as the human genetics program, masters in public health (I think??), and even tropical medicine. Perhaps those are options too.

I am almost positive that I will be moving as I landed a good job at Tulane Hospital Center. If anyone else is moving and needs roommate prospects or needs to know about the city (I visited for 3 days) then please post or contact me. Thanks for all the info and I hope this post continues with more knowledge from all.

Hi all,

I am interested in the mol/cel bio program next year and am wondering about the pre-reqs for the program... it says on the website that people should have completed a molec/cell bio class and genetics addition to the typical pre-med courses. I will have had several genetics classes by then (plus lots of bio courses in addition to the pre-med classes) but no specific molec/cell bio classes completed when I apply (though I have had those topics covered in other bio and ochem classes)- did you guys have all these classes done when you applied or are they lenient about pre-reqs? Also, has anyone found out if they are super selective or not? Thanks! Em

Mine was about a page double spaced. I wouldn't worry too much about your PS. I think they look mostly at GPA and MCAT scores. I don't think the program is too selective. I applied on a Thursday and heard back the following Tuesday.

I'm in. Just got the email this week. Unfortunately, I got a little over excited and applied to the Human Genetics program and got accepted also. Oh, and I also applied to the ACP program and am really keeping my fingers crossed for that one. If I don't get accepted to ACP, I am leaning towards the mol bio program. Speaking of ACP, does anyone have any info on this year's class? How many people applied? I imagine that I am up against some pretty sharp students (being they are already waitlisted at a school).

I hope you get into the ACP program as you have been waitlisted. I think that program is almost a guarentee (or more of one) for medical school if you do well in it. If you don't get into the ACP program, it seems like you are interested in the cell and molecular bio program. I am about to move to new orleans from Missouri to attend that program (I am moving on the 22nd of June). If you decide to go into this program we could be study buddies or even possibly roomies. Where are you moving from if you go to one of these programs? Do you need a roomie? Etc.

Good luck with your options and once again I hope you get into the ACP program. Keep in touch.

I could definitely use the studdy buddy. I'm married so the roomie idea is out, but either way it is good to hear from someone else who is headed down there in hopes of med school next year. (at least I imagine that is why you are applying). I'm coming from Atlanta, (wife is from the area) but my dad is military and the fam is moving to St. Louis this summer. Where in mizzou are you from? I lived in St. Louis for a couple years growing up--loved the midwest. Anyway, we'll definitely have to keep in touch. Good luck finding a roommate. I hear it can be tough, finding a good area to live in and all.

Columbia, MO...which is right between St. Louis and Kansas City. I think your family will like STL...it is a nice place to live...except it gets cold...and I had to get away from the cold weather.

It is ok that we can't room together, but knowing that someone else is heading towards N.O. in plans of med school is comforting. It is not too hard to find a place...it is just hard finding a place that is safe. I plan to stay in Tulane's dorms for a few days (~$20/day) and look around and find a place.

Please keep in touch and we can certainly be study buddies if we are in the same program. The dean seems extremely well connected to Tulane's Med School and UNO's med school...so it seems like a good place to do a Master's. The tuition is not bad either. I will be working 3 night shifts a week and going to the CMB program full time, so I expect to be very busy...especially tough in a party town like N.O.
If anyone else wants some info about the program, please don't hesitate to contact me and I hope to have more info as I start the program.

To cici and whoever else posted that they have not heard back...I definately advise calling the graduate program that you applied to or the general graduate school number. I had to call sooooo many times and fax my letters of rec about 3 times before my application was complete. The graduate school office personal seem to be very unorganized and seem to loose many important application material.
If I were you guys, I would definately call and bug them quite a bit. They are all very friendly however...atleast the people I talked to in the Cell and Molecular Biology Department...the program that I am attending this coming semester.
