So im using Pathoma now to study for step and unfortunately I underestimated how good of a tool it is for understanding concepts and I might not get through all of it. So my question is anyone planning on using Pathoma to review some path principles during third year? Or do you think we will have our hands full with third year as it is.

Dude I was full of aspiration about always having the basic science in my mind during my clinical years while I was board studying. However, this stuff becomes pretty low yield third year and you have just as much information to learn about clinical management.

I used my preclinical books and notes sparingly during third year (less than 5 times) when I had trouble remembering some material, but the need-to-know will be covered in your third year material and other sources you use (uptodate, review books, cecil's, etc).

In short, you may put this on your shelf and just watch it collect dust all year while you read another 2000 pages of material over third year.

Unfortunately thats what I thought. Bust your butt first two years and summer between second and third studying for step only to find out that its low yield material. Thanks for the info.

Do you guys use just the book or the whole web service?

I actually just use the videos and write down all the useful things onto first aid.

Can anyone comment on using it as a primary resource rather than review? I worry that it seems amazing to people who already took path but will have holes in it for those starting from scratch

I can say that I would've gotten mediocre path grades if I only relied on Pathoma. I used it at the start of blocks to get a brief overview of important concepts, and I reviewed the book at the end to remember high-yield bits. However, I am one of those heretics that believes review books are no substitute for actually learning the material in depth the first time, so take that with a grain of salt.

I feel like I should get an SDN badge for actually reading Big Robbins cover-to-cover.

How much of that do you retain though?

I think a mix of the two is good, review book + reference book for tough spots.

I don't retain every little bit, but going through the text really helps me hammer home both the fundamental concepts and some of the nitty gritty. Even when I forget the insane minutiae, by going through the material at a high level I've established a pretty firm foundation.

Anecdotally, the sections I did best on in step 1 were the ones I had actually read Robbins/Guyuron for. All the ones where I got lazy and used a review source only were visibly lower.

Well, that's impressive. I feel like I would like to but I may go insane if I study more than I already have to.

I've been a big proponent of quick and dirty. But in the end. I can see your point. Big Robbins and it's question book would've been a superb self-learning course. From which to use pathoma in review.

But pathoma is still an amazing tool.

But if total domination is sought after. As seems to be the norm on sdn. Then you might consider Visionary's counterpoint.
