We just had the accepted students reception at Tufts and I met a lot of people who were definitely going and some who were still undecided. What did you undecided people pick? People who are definitely going, what did you think? What are you going to do this summer?

I'm about 90% sure I'm going to Tufts next year. I've gotten into a few schools and the cost of housing is a lot more at Tufts than anywhere else, but I like their program the best. So I'll most likely be seeing you there!

I don't know where else you are looking but I don't think its too bad. I pay 475 a month plus utilities for one room of a two bedroom apartment five minutes from school.

I was kinda hoping I could get a 1 bedroom apartment. At some schools, I saw some for under $400. Since I don't think I'll find any of those in the Tufts area, I'll probably end up finding a roomate. How did you find someone to live with?

I'm definitely going! The reception was fun, more of a convince those who haven't decided yet to come here than a get to meet your future classmates, but it was still fun. The student panel was great, they were all so funny.

This summer I'll be working on finding an apartment, working at my family's skating rink, riding and showing my horses, and hopefully driving around with my vet.

Oh yeah and probably studying anatomy because I'm super paranoid!

A one bedroom apartment is an option. I wasn't interested in that so I didn't look for any. A website will go up (end of may) where current students can post if they are looking for roommates or have an apartment for rent. There were a few on there. I also suggest putting a note up on craigs list that your looking for a one bedroom apartment near Grafton. I found some options on the website and was also contacted through craigs list.

i'm definitely going to tufts in the fall (yay)- i have nooo idea what i'm doing this summer. i should probably work but everyone seems to say that i should just enjoy the free time while i can. the reception made me want to go there like 20 times more than i already did...which was a lot to begin with and i'm pretty sure that everyone i know is ridiculously sick of hearing me talk non-stop about how excited i am.

but yeah, i'm pretty curious too about the whole process of finding roommates and whatnot to live with in that area. is the tufts housing website that they put up actually helpful in terms of finding roommates?

A few vets at the practice I work at said the same thing--to take time off this summer to enjoy the free time while I have it. Right now I'm working 2 jobs (I graduated from my undergrad school in December) and I think I'm going to cut it down to 1 at the beginning of summer and then take August off. I guess it sort of depends on how much I can save before that. I'm sorry I missed the accepted students day...it sounds like it was a lot of fun.

Welcome, future Tufts students! Looking forward to meeting you all in the fall.

Regarding roommates, I also recall there being an online "grad student forum" which we incoming students used last year to communicate with each other about whatever, including roommate/housing stuff. I think it came online sometime in June. I have no idea if the admissions/administrative folks are going make the forum available again , but I know of a couple of people in our class who found roommates that way.

Is this forum through Tufts website? I think it's great that they do that. I was telling PlantersPunch that I also thought the reception was good, but since it's tailored more towards undecided people it made it hard for people like us who are definitely going to meet other people who are sure they are going too. The forum will be nice because it will provide us a chance to get to know each other before classes start. Although I guess we have 4 years of getting to know each other ahead of us.

Also for those already enrolled in Tufts I have a question. My husband and I are looking to rent out 2 rooms in our condo and I'm wondering if I can list my place through Tufts. The only problem is that it's far away (Waltham) and they strongly encouraged us not to room with people from the same year. Do you guys think I should list it or should we just go the craigslist route?

Oh wise 1st year students, I was wondering if I could ask your opinion...

I'm kind of leaning towards getting a tablet pc because I like to write on the powerpoint slides (if given) and diagrams as notes and was thinking this would be a good way to stay organized

oh and they seem really cool haha

anyways, I was wondering if anyone in your class has a tablet/if you think the way the tufts notes are generally organized would be conducive to this type of note taking. I would obviously still be open to having a notebook/binder for the classes that didn't provide online notes, but I'm just nervous that I'm going to end up spending extra money to get a tablet and then not use it to its full extent.

thanks!

I was thinking the same thing! Thanks for asking, PlantersPunch!! The tablets seem really cool and a few of the schools I visited really pushed them, but I'm not sure if its worth the money. I already have a laptop and don't want to spend money that I don't need to, since I'm going to be pretty poor for the next few years.

Yes, it was. But if I remember correctly, it was a link that the admissions folks sent to us in early summer; it wasn't something that was accessible from the main page or anything. You might want to ask the admissions folks if they plan on offering this forum again to this year's incoming students.

You should be able to list your available rooms on the Tufts housing website, that Angelo84 rightly said should come online sometime in late May. Tufts students (new and current) will be able to access it. And for what it's worth...I don't think Waltham is far! We actually just bought a home there and are moving there this weekend!
As for not rooming with anyone in your current year...I think that's your call; I can see pros and cons either way, but all up to personal preference.

Good luck, and feel free to post here or PM if you have any other questions!

If you like writing on PP slides, then the tablet might be a good idea for you b/c all of our lecture notes are PP! I've seen a couple of people in our class with the tablet; personal preference as to whether you like the tablet, but certainly the way our notes are distributed will fit the purpose of the tablet.

i know this was mentioned in another thread, and i don't want to steer this one totally off topic, but if you didn't want to spend the extra money (or wanted to buy an apple since they don't make a tablet), you could always just buy a graphics tablet. it's a small square pad that comes with a pen that connects to your laptop (mac or pc) via the usb port. you can write on powerpoints, etc. just as you would with a tablet pc. if you don't want to spend a lot of extra money buying a tablet, or if you want to buy an apple like me, this seems like a pretty good option. there are some cheap ones at best buy that i've heard are pretty good for less than $100.

I agree--if you've got a new laptop, or don't want to buy a tablet PC, then graphics tablets are a nice alternative. They're easy to use and there are plenty out there to choose from; the Wacom Bamboo, for instance, would work nicely if you're mainly using it to write on powerpoint slides.

I sent in my acceptance form and deposit today!!! Definitely going!!!!!

Sent in my deposit yesterday! Couldn't be more excited 🙂
