I can only apply to my city's schools (hub works for em so we're pretty much planted), but am starting to feel worried with so few applications. Anyone else sharing my position?

Nochaser,
I am not applying til 2 years from now, but I will only be applying to 5 or so schools. I cannot afford the money, too many bills. But I just hope I have the stats enough not to worry. And what is the hub thing?

Thats the reason I will probably be staying in my home state, which has just one school. (ARGH) The wifey, and the kiddie. Gotta look out for more than just us huh? Consider yourself lucky you have that many to choose from!

Yup. I live at the border of two states... In my home state there are two MD schools (I applied to both), and just over the border in the neighboring state there's two more, so I applied to all four of those. I am originally from N.C. (all my family is still there) and really like UNC so applied to them too for a total of five schools. I thought about more, and if I don't make it in this year I will apply to more next year.

All the local docs I talked to only applied to around 4 schools on average, so I figured if it worked for them, it will hopefully work for me. 🙂 I guess I had a chance at getting in a big-name school (as long as my MCAT scores turn out as I hope...I just took it in August), but I decided not to try that yet. Even if I did get in one there's the problem of my husband finding a job there, and we'd both like to stay close to at least *one* of our families (his family is here where we live now).

I am hoping that this strategy will pay off for both of us. Good luck to you getting in!!

hi nochaser,

I'm in a similar situation. DH has a great job and won't relocate so I'm limited to the schools in my area. Luckily, I'm in Houston and there are three awesome schools.

I only applied to these three schools, and I got interviews at all three. I'm hoping to get into at least one (please, please!).

I guess your odds depend on your situation. If your GPA/MCAT are good and you have good experience, it shouldn't be too bad. Plus, I think they like to see people that they know are going to stay put in the area.

In my case, I have lower-end GPA and very high MCAT.

I'd tell them in your personal statement, or in your secondary application, that they are the only school you are applying to.

Nochaser, if your numbers and rest of your app are at least decent you have a fine chance. The schools you have the most chance at (and actually want to/can attend) you're applying too. Why apply to schools that you can't attend and waste money? Just be happy you don't have a zillion applications to fill out like the rest of us and can concentrate on making the ones you're doing the best you can. When you're filling out 30 apps in one month, some of them will inevitably suck! Don't worry--you're lucky! I wish I was a good enough candidate to apply to fewer schools.

Okay, if I may ask, what is a lower end GPA and a high MCAT?

9 for me. I've got 4 interviews so far.

I applied to 4 state schools(so did my husband). I have 2 interviews so far. We'll apply to one more depending on his August MCAT scores.

I, too, have a low GPA and high MCAT scores (3.03 science, 3.25 overall, 36 MCAT -11, 12, 13 P).

It's nice to see so many people married and making decisions based on the sig other 🙂

yeah, I only applied to seven but my state school is my choice because of the wife. It's nice to see that people consider other things in their lives besides medicine important. I only applied to seven schools, only one is in state the other neighboring states aren't friendly to out-of-staters so I hope to get into my state school. If not, there will be much talking and decision making to be done. I hope this won't happen, but we are ready.

I applied to 3 schools - but that is quite a lot considering there are only 2 schools in NZ and 4 grad schools in Oz....so I guess 3/6 ain't too bad.

8 primary
8 secondary (6 completed so far)
1 interview
0 acceptances
0 rejections
and my personal favorite...
0 AMCAS verification

I am only applying to two schools... my husband and i just decided not to continue the process with Tufts and BU since we would rather I spend another year at home with our soon to be born daughter than move back up north (we live in NC). Also - he works as a software engineer and job stability is going to be very important for us. There is certainly a lot more to consider when you have a partner and family...

I only applied to 4 schools and here I sit as an MS-I, so it can be done.

I'm an MS1 now, but last year I was an applicant with ****ty MCAT scores and average GPA, some research, a little volunteer work. I applied to 3 schools and got into 2. School #3, never received a recommendation so my application wasnt completed. dont worry! nobody can have worse stats than me!!

I applied to 8 through AMCAS, but after I reconsidered (and after one rejection) I'm really down to four schools. I'll take two off if I got into my state school, whick I'll find out on Monday.

vietcongs,

what changes did you make on your 2nd app? I am in same boat you were in last year-- some research, volunteer exp, decent overall gpa, avg. sci gpa. have yet to see my MCAT scores, and am still waiting on recs! 😡

oh, and thanks to all of you that responded to this. glad to know there's others in the same position, cuz I was really getting worried, esp. after reading posts about a person submitting 37 secondaries 😱

spacecadet,

you are in a primo situation--interviews at all three! that's awesome. can't wait to hear which of the two acceptances you're gonna turn down 🙂

I only applied to four schools...I really wanted to stay in state. I'm in Michigan, where two out of the three MD schools aren't too terribly difficult to get into, and state schools are where I have the best shot anyway. So I'm comfortable with only applying to four schools.
