Anyone Else Applying to 50+ MD Schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This actually sounds like a good reason TO apply to that many schools. If he hadn't, he might not have gotten more then 1-2 interviews, which would put an awful lot of pressure on him to preform on that interview.

I think if you have the money, theres no reason not to apply broadly, assuming the schools are within your range and dont hate OOS.

Um...........no.

I think the moral here is that if he had just applied to his in state schools, he would've gotten in anyway. Your conclusion would only apply if he got into an unfriendly OOS school that he wouldn't have applied to had he not done 50+.

Well maybe it would make sense if you want more interview practice (and have the money for it), which is kind of what levitin was getting at. Otherwise, you're right.

He was.

You kids with FAP or wealthy parents are going to do what you want. But when you're freaking our about how long it's taking remember that all of your schools are probably reading a largely inflated number of applications and you are part of the problem.

I applied to one.

And it's one that I made up in my head. And even then my acceptance isn't certain.

I've never heard of someone applying to 50+ schools. I'm applying to 37 schools and I thought that was a huge $$ investment. I can't even imagine how much 50+ schools would cost..

I'm applying "broadly," how about you guys?

How long do you think all the secondaries will take (per secondary)?

Cut it down! I submitted 45 primaries and regret it now. I got in at UQ-Ochsner which I'm happy to attend and now I'm only going to be sending out a couple of secondaries because I would take UQ over so many of the schools I submitted at without realizing it.

Damn bro 45 cycles is a long time to be applying

FAP is not completely free. It only gives 14 schools (plus secondaries) free of charge. We pay the same $34 for every additional school beyond that.

FAP applicants are not to be accused of inflating the number of apps.

I'm sure they love the problem. A large cash flow of non refundable fees piling up from neurotic pre meds from over applying.

+1

Though seasonal reviewers are somewhat costly to employ (e.g., MS4s and the like).

It really depends on the applicant. Anybody with stronger GPA, MCAT, and ECs would be comfortable applying to state schools and several appropriate OOS friendly programs and feel somewhat confident about getting an interview/acceptance.

If I had an average profile, I would probably apply broadly to as many programs that I felt I had a shot at getting an interview.

Yeah, it'll cost money. But when you realize this is your future at stake, and the fact that anyhow you are probably going to be in tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in debt from medical school, spending money for the application process probably isn't going to be a big deal.

I applied to at least 50 schools, maybe 65 schools

....over 3 cycles though.

50 in one cycle sounds like a lot to me. Probably too many unless you have both a lot of disposable income and time.
