Anyone Else Have a Tough Senior Year?

Anyone else choose to not go the easy route in senior year?

Of course, like most other SDN'ers I plan on going to medical school. I contemplated having a very easy senior year, but decided to go the hard route.

Current schedule: (Which is really killing me - I have so many tests every week)

- AP Gov/AP Economics (Both are semester long courses - done with economics now in gov)
- AP Calculus BC
- AP Physics C
- Organic Chemistry Honors (Yes, my school offers orgo, such a pain)
- AP Eng 4
- AP Biology
- AP Environmental Science (Pretty much only "easy" class I have)

I'm a junior, but I only have three AP classes next year:

I might take regular physics too if I'm feeling ambitious. Lol.

My GPA is really low, but I am going to a state school. I had difficulties in grade 9 and 10. I have been on honor ever since. I think my GPA is about 3.21.

This generation thinks that we need to not have a life and be overworked to get into a top name-brand school to make our parents happy 🙄

One of my close friends now attends Johns Hopkins. He loaded his schedule with all AP courses. He ended up with a 3.87 GPA and a 2320 on the SAT. His parents said that he would get kicked out of the house if he didn't attend a top 20 undergrad.

I don't remember hanging out with him much his last two years of high school. He was always busy getting his EC's and studying for the SAT's and doing everything possible towards his education. I mean that's great and all, but I don't think he even had a girlfriend, or had time to pass his driving test

I think it's important to go to college, period. I say at LEAST your state school, but if you go to an even lower tier school, it doesn't even matter. Rankings don't matter. It's what makes YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL happy.

The ONLY reason to get good grades is to show aptitude and to increase your options in what colleges you can go to. Pre-Medical students don't benefit from going to a top tier school. The only people that I can see benefiting from going to a top tier school are for Political Science, Economics/Finance, and aspiring scientists. Pre-Professional school students don't need to go to a top undergrad. As long as it's an accredited university, you will become a Lawyer, Physician, Podiatrist, Dentist etc if you work hard enough.

I don't know if his parents, nor him realize that a pre-med at JHU is so incredibly competitive. God, some people...

Like Arijos said. Its not where you go, its what you do there. Point and case; me. I go to UM-Flint, a branch of the Michigan campus. Its a good school, though they focus on their MBA and nursing programs nonetheless, a great school for a pre-med. Class sizes for bio pre-reqs are 100-115 students. Almost everyone in the bio-department knows me by first name, including professors. I did one research project, and currently one on right now, and all I had to do was ask the professors if it was okay. They knew me from class and knew I was a good, smart, worker, so they let me in on their projects. Also, its a LOT less competitive. I know a ton of people on campus. It's easy to make your own club/organization and find leadership positions. Being in a small school certainly has its advantages. That being said, there is nothing wrong with going to a large campus or big state school; but make the most out of what they have to offer.

Well, I've been working my ass off because the more I do now, the easier it'll be for me in college. Right now, here's my workload:

AP Physics BC - working my ass off for this class yet I get C/D for the tests and As for the labs, averaging me to a very low B for the past 2 marking periods
AP Biology - lots of work, but not hard. B+
AP Statistics - pretty easy, not a lot of work. A so far
AP Calculus AB - pretty easy, but I'm slacking off a little bit, A so far, but B for the midterm.
Anatomy & Physiology - pretty easy all around even though its notorious for lots of work. I get close to the same amount of work as AP Biology every couple of nights, but it's relatively easy
English CP - pretty easy, but I'm too lazy and I don't read any of the books. Still getting As, maybe B for the midterm
Graphic Design 2 - joke class of the day, do bare minimum, get good grades.

Seconded... My senior year did not consist of anything, I graduated early! And my Junior year were simple classes too (no AP). I still ended up in a top 10 college 😛

I don't know how you can manage all that. I'm in 12th grade and seriously the only class that I'm taking AP is Calculus. In my opinion enjoy things, have a balanced life and be the owner of your time and don't let others own your time.

I wish my school would let me take 3 math classes. Question, why are you taking biology? That's a freshman class.

And are you good at math? I found statistics to be difficult in the fact that it is incredibly boring and repetitive. I got a 86 in that class.

I wouldn't necessarily say "better school". Just more opportunities, which no one can doubt.

Huge reason why people strive to get into Wharton and HBS is networking. You get to know a lot of people that are the head hancho's of industries. In think we can all agree that a Harvard degree looks better than a Penn State degree (not putting down penn state in any way, shape, or form)

Also, i think if one gets accepted to an Ivy, I say go. Ivy League schools have the least amount of graduate debt (for undergrads) and you can't beat the grade inflation at Princeton (Cornell grade deflates however)

And are you good at math? I found statistics to be difficult in the fact that it is incredibly boring and repetitive. I got a 86 in that class.

Physics C is a pain in the ass. Hard as hell, but it gives me good exposure to what I'll be learning for the MCATs, same goes with Bio. And AP Bio is generally an upperclassmen class, generally Juniors and Seniors. Surprisingly, we have 2 sophomores in our class which is very rare.

And math in general comes rather easily to me. Stat I have a 97 in the class. The class is based off of tests 95% of the time and 5% of the time is homework which we rarely get. Calculus is pretty easy too, getting a 93 there. But then again, my calc teacher is regarded as the god of calculus because he explains everything so many times that you just end up remembering everything that he says.

Yeah, unfortunately not everyone offers these courses. 🙁
