Hello! I just got an email today about my acceptance into Boston University’s DPT program with a Sargent Scholarship! Very excited, but also very torn because I have a sizable scholarship to Drexel University as well, which will make tuition at Drexel a good 30k less than Boston.

So I was just wondering if anyone else has heard back from Boston University, and whether or not they are considering attending.

I live on the west coast so I’ve never been to the BU campus, so if anyone has taken a tour of the program some insight would be much appreciated :)

Haven't been to BU, but just came back from visiting Boston to look at MGH from the west coast, and Boston is an amazing city if you haven't been

Happy to hear! I’ve never been, the only east coast city I’ve been to is philly. Hoping to change that if I end up going to school on the east coast though

Congrats on your acceptance. If you have any questions, I am a second year at BU and I am willing to fill you in on BU. In my opinion, I would go where you would save the most money ie. Drexel. I have a friend at drexel and he enjoys the program (no complaints). It’s a fun city to be but you won’t be able to enjoy it as much as you would imagine and its expensive COL. We do have access to great clinical sites, based on a top 10 choice rank. We do work with patients with chronic stroke in our neuro labs, and also patients with Parkinson’s etc. The program is cut throat IMO. Our retention rate is lower than a lot of programs, we have lost 13-15 people in our cohort (some left for personal reasons but most leave due to academic issues). I would go where the graduation rate is high (90s and above), because why put yourself through hell when it is already hard enough (PT School in general). The general consensus I’ve read about drexel seems extremely positive. BU’s program is accelerated, 5 academic semesters.. I think Drexels curriculum layout seems more feasible in terms of learning the material and promoting retention. Congrats
Thank you so much for the thorough reply!! That helps a lot actually!

I’m interested in pursuing pediatrics, is there opportunity to do so at B.U.? I couldn’t find any peds specialists among the faculty listed online which kinda surprised me, is it true?

And how are the clinicals set up (length of rotation wise) I read there’s 42 weeks, but on another part of the site I read that the final clinical rotation is 22 weeks instead of 24.

And do you have the whole winter off between fall and spring semester? I noticed there wasn’t a winter semester, like some programs squeeze in even though they are on the semester system. How much time off do you have between semesters? And during the 2nd summer where there is only a 6 week clinical rotation, do you have the rest of the summer off before fall?

Oh and how much is the total tuition? It was kinda hard to figure out on the website, I’ve estimated 150k, is that right?

Sorry for the long reply! :inpain:

We do take a peds class in our final semester, and I believe a PCS does teach the course (Pasternak). We do learn about pediatric pathologies in other courses throughout the curriculum since it is a systems based curriculum.

Clinicals: We had ICE (integrated Clinicals) for 6 weeks, 1 day a week, in both the fall and spring of our first year. As for full-time clinicals, we had a 6 week clinical for our first.. some people had 8 week and some had their clinicals right after the semester ended in may, but most of us had ours begin in July and end in August.. so we had a lot of time off in between May and July. Second year, we have a 12 week clinical. Our final clinicals begin in January of our third year and typically end in July.. so it’s 6 months.. usually they break it down into two 12 week clinicals. So thats 42 weeks of full-time clinical.

We do have winter off always which is great, trust me.. you need the downtime to relax and give your brain a break. It’s typically the length of a normal college winter break.

Tuition is tricky... I will say it does increase every year. Right now it’s something like 51,000/year from what I remember.. but factor in COL, gym and health costs (mandatory fees), clinical afill fees. It’s a lot.. and BU does give need based scholarship which is great but it still does not offset the astronomical price to attend. You did receive a generous merit based scholarship which is great!
So the first summer semester is a flat rate, and then two years (4 semesters) at 51,000 standard rate, and one final semester in your third year (half of 51,000).

Go where you will save money, I did not have that choice (only accepted to expensive schools). You will thank yourself later :)

Thank you so much for your honestly, it really helps put things into perspective.

Just a couple other questions that came to mind....What are the setting requirements for the clinical rotations? Are there any abroad opportunities? (Whether through service trips or clinical rotations)

And is there a lot of freedom in the “Academic Practicum” part of the curriculum? For instance, a goal of mine is to design a community based group therapy program that provides an outlet for physical activist and therapy to communities that lack resources, is that something I could start working on/designing through the “Academic Practicum” courses?

Thank you again!

Hey! I was accepted to BU also. In the email it said I was awarded a scholarship, but after I sent a follow up because I didn't see a number for how much the scholarship would be I was told that they didn't mean to send me the introduction that included a scholarship award. So it was a bit of an emotional roller coaster, but I'm still happy I got in.

Aw I’m sorry to hear about that mix up! I haven’t received an actual physical letter yet, just an email was sent to me yesterday and it said the physical letter would be arriving in the next week or 2.

Congrats on getting in though! Are you considering attending?

Hello!

I also received an acceptance from BU. I will be attending an info session on the 16th of February! I'll be flying in from LA!

Thanks! I've already put my deposit down at MGH and that's my first choice. Because I didn't actually receive any money from BU I think it's unlikely I'll go and one of the posters above mentioned the program is pretty cut-throat, which definitely isn't appealing to me. That being said I'm still going to attend an info session to get an idea of what the program has to offer.

Congrats to everyone else that got in too!

Tell me how you like it after the info session guys! I don’t think I’ll be able to make it out there, I’ve already spent to much money flying back and forth for my interviews. Wish I could attend!

Congrats on getting into your top choice!

I second this! I got into BU Simmons and Northwestern so far. I was originally really set on Boston however, my views have kinda changed and now I’m very much so torn. Having more info from another current student or someone that goes to a info session would be so great!
