Anyone else hear from Royal College about an interview?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I too was accepted to RVC right after my 1.27 interview. I'm pretty sure I'll be going there in the fall!

question:
When does the school year start? It said in my email that 4-yr North American folks have to attend a 2 wk session before school.
I'm asking because I want to get a new computer before school and I want to buy it here (US) before I go. I'd like to wait until the new macs are released in late Aug/early Sept.

Also, how is the on campus housing in Camden? I saw there are 2 housing options and they both say you get your own bedroom and bathroom, right?Anyone have experience in either of them? I guess by the time I get out to Hawkshead campus the new housing complex will be built. Do more people live off-campus there?

Aaaaannnndd....Is it easy to get around Hawkshead without a car? Is there a foodstore nearby? How is the train system that goes to London? Are there buses in the area to get to nearby towns? I don't have a car now and I'd prefer to keep it that way (one less headache.) I'm also not too sure I should be driving on the other side of the road. Do people from the US learn to drive there?

Thanks!!
I think it'd be ok to wait for the newer models to come out. First day of the pre-sessional this year was Sept. 13, if that helps at all. We were 'required' to be here on Sept. 11, though, so we could get settled in and recover a bit from jet-lag.

Housing-wise: College Grove is ok; you get your own room but it's en-suite, which means the bathroom is basically a compartment that was built in with the crappiest and smallest shower humanly possible. Good thing about it, though, is that it's right next to college, so really short walk in the morning. (And when you have 9am lecture, it's nice to be able to sleep in). Mary B is newer, and nicer in my opinion (the bathroom is almost normal), it's about a 20 minute walk from the college. When it's raining, it sucks. Some people do live off campus, and I probably would have taken that route if I had the money. I live at College Grove now, and it's not terrible, just not ideal.

Hawkshead will be a little bit of a 'figure it out when you get here' sort of thing. I've decided not to move to Potter's Bar because I love the city and I can't bear to leave it yet. But the train station at Potter's Bar has a bus that goes to and from HH campus regularly, and if you live nearby the bus stop, you're set. The train can get you to London in 25 minutes if you get the fast train, about 35 with the slow one (stops more frequently).

No worries! Most of this stuff you'll find out when you get here. The pre-sessional, though tedious, was really helpful.

On a side-note: bank accounts are tricky, so definitely look into getting one as soon as you get here. Took 2 weeks for me. And, make sure you have enough money to last until loans arrive in October. I had to take a short loan from the school in order to cover my costs until the loan money arrived.

so kinda random OT butttt.....i just checked the RVC site and it still says that they are accepting late direct applications....

i just e-mailed the "international@rvc-email thingy" [but last time i did, i never got a response], so was wondering if anyone knew of this?

or if, idkkkk, someone could possibly maybe ask this to the interviewers if all is going jolly and the adcoms seems nice enough to ask??

i've done all of the damn pre-reqs and planning on graduating fall '11, but was thinking, hey! what the hell, doesn't hurt does it...i mean, there's no fee...haha.

oh...and congrats to all that have been accepted! hoping i'll be in the same boat next year! 😀

You're a little late in the game now 8)
The deadline was Oct 1st and by late I think they meant Oct 15th at the latest. Don't hesitate to apply again next year, the school is awesome!

Thanks for the info!
Doing massive amounts of internet searches the past week I've come to the same conclusion..Mary B house seems like the nicer place out of the two. Also the price of plane tickets drops a lot at the beginning of Sept, so I'll prolly wait until then to leave (If I end up going to RVC.)

What exactly is the pre-sessional for?

It's to get you prepared for the style of teaching here, and for living in a different country. They do mock lectures and two mock exams so you can get a feel for the way they test, also.

I went to the reception for accepted students in NYC and was sold!! I'm super excited to finally know where I am going and can't wait to head to England in September!! Is anyone else certain that they will be attending?? I think it would be really neat to kinda of keep track on everyone's status as they find housing, book flights, and finalize details as this whole overseas experience is going to be completely new for all of us! Anyone else interested??

I'm like 90% sure I'm going! I'm just waiting for my IS to tell me something (i.e. waiting for Penn's rejection letter.) Before and after my NYC interview I got to meet and talk with some fantastic people and I'm super stoked about going there! I've already thought about when I'm flying there, where I'm gonna live, etc. I think there was another thread where someone said they made a facebook group. In like a month I'll probably be joining it and making my England adventure official.

Which session did you go to? I was at the Jan 28th one - Friday at noon.

I really enjoyed the interview. My girlfriend and I stayed with some friends up in NJ then spent 1 night in the city. We saw The Lion King and it was amazing. I loved the weather to be honest - midnight on top of The Empire State Building is amazing.

I went Jan 28th also, my interview was at 9:15, the first one! I think it went really well, they asked about research and importance to Vetmed, ethics, and 'real life' issues like Dairy farming and Zoo's. I'm hoping that if I get accepted, I would go, but I'm waiting on my status with Western 🙂

Has anyone received an official offer letter/email yet? In my acceptance email it said I should receive this shortly...but nothing yet.

I have not received mine yet either, hopefully this week! I am super excited to have it in my hands.

I keep checking my mail every night when i get home from work... everyday it is such a disappointment when the only thing i find is a bill!

The acceptance email i received said "Your official offer letter and further details will be sent to you from the Admissions Office shortly."

Shortly is a little vague... and next week will be one month since my interview, so i expect it will be here soon!

haha, yes. shortly is quite vague...and, from my pov, inaccurate.

Does anyone remember when they said we'd be hearing back? I didn't hear anything on my interview day, in early February, and don't remember when they said we should hear about acceptances/rejections. I'm starting to get antsy!

They said by the end of Feb. I just got my offer email this morning!!! YAY! You should get yours soon!

Funny thing is that I have an interview at Western in like 2 hours! Idk what I'll do if I get into both! I never imagined I'd have this problem haha

Hey guys,

So I got into the RVC 4 year program and now I'm torn. I'm already in the program at Murdoch University in Western Australia but it's a 5 year program and it's $45K USD a year versus the $32K USD a year for RVC. Can anyone give me some insight on what to do? From a financial standpoint it seems most appropriate to save money in the long run by going to RVC, but I'm nervous about giving up something good I have for someone that I'm uncertain about at RVC. I'm sure RVC is a fantastic program - are all US accredited programs the same? Like, would I get the same exact exposure to different animal types at RVC as I would Murdoch University as I would a U.S. school? Does anyone know that kind of comparative information? If I do the RVC thing, would anyone want to get to know me more and quite possibly live with me so we can find some cheaper housing?

I hope to hear from someone soon! Thanks!

Wow, ultimately this decision is going to be yours alone. I assume if you leave Murdoch now you'll lose the 45K you've already paid them in a years tuition? So that's something to think about.

Sorta, yes...it seems most of the vet curriculums are fairly similar in terms of the information that you'll leave with. Some of the learning styles in different places are different, some structure the course differently, etc. I really like RVCs approach. From what I've hear its a more common European approach where they test mostly at the end of the year (not per semester.) It also seems to be very heavy and broad in terms of hands on animal exposure.

I'm more than likely starting in RVC's 4 yr program in the fall. I'm planning to live on campus (its actually cheaper than my current apt in Philly.) But if you're ever in the Philly/NYC area and you decide to go to RVC PM me...I'd love to meet a future classmate!

I agree, ultimately the decision is going to be yours. It would be hard to know that you have already spent $45,000 and switch programs but I have recently been under the theory that if it is going to enhance my learning experience, money isn't really a factor. As far as animal exposure, currently the Queen Mother's Hospital for Animals (RVCs referral and student teaching hospital) is currently the largest referral hospital in Europe so the amount of exposure you would receive would be first class and probably very broad.

I will be going to RVC in the fall. I'm contemplating whether I should live on campus or not at this point but I as well am always willing and excited to meet a fellow classmate. If your anywhere near the Kentucky/Tennessee area we might be able to meet up!! Actually, that goes for anyone on here, it would be wonderful to have some familiar faces when we get to England!!

I agree with vetbound 100%, think about enhancing your education! However, I think your situation is complex, and many things must be considered (moving from Australia to the UK, leaving behind what you have already established in Australia, a change in the curriculum format etc...)

Ang: I hope your interview went will at western, and congrats on the acceptance into the RVC!

On another note, I am pretty sure (99%) that I will be attending the RVC in the fall! See you guys in London!

PS. Is it time to start an RVC c/o 2015 FB page?

I've been accepted in the 5 year program! SO EXCITED!
going to live off campus I think. I have a cat/am 35 years old and used to a bit of autonomy. I'm going in 2 weeks to visit though!

so excited!!!!!

PS. Is it time to start an RVC c/o 2015 FB page?

Check the new thread titled RVC class of 2015 or something along those lines... I think someone made one already! I may be joining VERY soon...

Awaiting word on that lovely scholarship that I know I won't get but hey, a kid can dream.

edit: Here is the page - http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=...52184661501672

think that works, I can't check, not allowed on FB at work, but because its a vet, I am allowed here! haha

It's under the 'RVC Class of 2015 thread 🙂 That one worked for me.

Hi there,

We're the two oldies in the bunch, I guess. I was accepted into the four-year program, but I'm opting for the five-year. I'll be 40 when I start! See you there.

"Wow, ultimately this decision is going to be yours alone. I assume if you leave Murdoch now you'll lose the 45K you've already paid them in a years tuition? So that's something to think about."

Actually, as long as I withdraw before March 13th (census date), I was told that I can get a full refund back.

Yeah, when I interviewed in NYC I talked for hours to the American alum that went to RVC and she told me that if one wanted to specialize in something or do something other than ag animals, companion animals, or mixed of the two then you'll have to go somewhere else since they don't have a lot of classes (if any) about exotics or wildlife. But I asked my flatmate that is in her fourth year here at Murdoch and she said it's quite similar here in Australia, even. You can take one wildlife unit and one exotics unit but that's about it. And I must admit, getting tested once a year for stuff is a bit intimidating. Do you get to re-try if you mess up? :-/

I used to live in the Midwest where it's pretty cheap (my one bedroom apartment was $400/month excluding utilities) so coming to place where it's like $460/month for a 3-bedroom house is a bit of a change. But I'm sure it's probably around the same prices in London on campus as it is in Western Australia, because it's hella expensive to live here. A liter of milk is like $3, whereas I could get a gallon of milk for $3 in the Midwest! I don't know how much it costs on the East coast, but yeah... I just need to find a cheaper place/education since I'm paying for my own education (and I already have like $90K in debt from undergrad/grad degrees).

So anyway, I hope to hear from you soon laitmanvet!

VetBoand,

As you may have read earlier, I can get my fill refund back as long as I withdraw (and fill out all the necessary paperwork) before March 13, 2011. So hopefully I'll get the ball rolling on that one. Hey, I'd be willing to hunt for places with you (and/or laitmanvet) if you guys are interested. I'm all about saving money to find a place and having a residence that is conducive for good study habits. I don't know if that's on-campus or off-campus but whatever works!

Guys,
Now I'm looking into bringing my girlfriend with me, or rather us going together. She's a liscensed optician here in the US and wants to go to Optometry school. She's applying to UK schools, UK optometry, US optometry, and online schools in the US to finish her bachelors degree. We also have friends looking into visa information. Anyone else have any advice? We're not entirely looking to get married at this point.

So I wasn't able to attend the interviews in NY, but I mentioned in my email that if they were to offer phone or skype interviews I'd happily do that...
To my surprise I have a phone interview this Friday!!!
I'm kinda nervous cuz I've never done a phone interview for anything... I'm afraid of awkward silences...lol...

Anyone have any helpful tips on how to prepare???:scared:

Wow! That's exciting 🙂 They must have been really impressed by your application!

I've done phone interviews for jobs before and it worked out just fine. I preferred talking on a "real phone" so I used my dorm phone, but make sure you have FULL bars if you're on a cell phone. Poor reception is just frustrating for everyone on the conversation.

I tend to get distracted when I'm on the phone, so I made sure to put all of my books/notes/computer away before beginning the conversation. I paced around my room, which may not work for everyone (and makes you look crazy), but it helped me focus. You may want to keep your application materials in front of you in case they refer to a specific portion of your personal statement or a particular experience.

Oh, and this may seem obvious... but make sure you're somewhere where your friends won't come in. You don't want them starting karaoke in the bedroom beneath yours as you try to explain how you're a professional adult, lol.

There were no awkward silences during my interviews. However, I'm also not uncomfortable by silence. Sometimes the interviewer may be looking over your file and won't want you interrupting. So... don't be afraid of not talking for a min or so.

Have fun and let us know how it goes 🙂

Congrats!
Yeah, ditto, I also have problems with distractions while on the phone. I start mumbling and then my voice trails off....and then my mom tells me to stop reading and pay attention.
I have problems with interrupting people on the phone. Its harder to tell when a person is done talking and vice versa. But just stay calm and you'll be fine!
I was worried about awkward silences while interviewing in person, but the conversation flowed very naturally and we had a lot to talk about.

Thanks for the help!!
Do you guys who interviewed already have any tips on what to prepare for? Or was there something you wish you had prepared yourself more for when asked?
Anything about current events or welfare stuff or whatever?
What about like North American stuff vs UK?

I didn't know a lot going into it. I read a few threads on here and based on that I read news articles and did some current events research.
They asked me a lot of ethics questions, animal use in food, zoos, research. I mixed in info about current events to make my points about my pov. They asked me things like "who regulates the use of animals for food in the US" when I was discussing regulating the care of these animals.
They asked me what I knew about the current curriculum. (which I thought was a weird topic.)
I also work in research and have a research-based master's so they asked me about my project. I figured this was something I would be asked so I thought about how I would talk about it.
Hope this helps!

They asked me the same kinda things, but also, stuff like what do you think's going to be the hardest about moving to the UK and getting used to the UK? Also, they'll ask you at the end if you have any questions for them, so I'd recommend looking into their research or stuff that they do on a daily basis. One of my interviewers was in literally 7 or 8 organizations/research/teaching, so I was like how do you do it all?! haha and what is your favorite. She liked that. And yes, some ethics esp with animals in research since RVC is trying to move away from live animals in its research and more onto cells in a dish.

Thanks for the help!!

So.... how did the interview go?

I applied for a job in NZ next year, which means I may need to only apply to schools that don't interview in person (Edinburgh is my #1 choice anyway). I'm thinking RVC may be a candidate too though if they do phone interviews!

Hey guys - I have another question about studying at RVC. I heard the class size for 2015 will be 200 students, which is almost double the average vet school size in the US.
How do current students there feel about the class size? Do you find it hard to get to know any professors? Do you think that will have an effect on having someone to write LORs when you're applying to externships, internships etc?

The last 3 years are in class sizes of about 6 or 7 I've heard, and I don't know too much about the first year. There are only about 60-ish American students that will be in the 4-year accelerated, so really our class will be much smaller. Even though it does have classes with the English students in the 5-year, those of us in the 4-year will have some individuality because we already have a degree.

Right, so as AngSchmange said, the 4-yr people are by ourselves for the first yr. Then we join up with the previous yrs 5-year program for their years 3, 4, 5 (actually 2, 3, 4 for us.) So for yr 1 there are only about 60 people (mostly Americans.) I do remember the people from admin that I talked to saying that the class is broken up and small groups are more common than us all being together in one lecture for the last 3 yrs.

I know a vet who is an RVC grad here are she still knows some of her professors who are still at RVC teaching, and she's been out of school since the late 90's. Additionally, I went to a huge state school for college and I got to know a few profs on a first name basis. I guess, just like anywhere else, its up to you to make those connections are get to know people.

I thought it went okay... I felt I answered the questions well even though there were maybe 2 that he was trying to help me out on to get the right answer...lol. Then after thinking about it, there's always more things I think I should have added...

But I ended up getting an email this past Thursday and it said they accepted me to their 5 year program... even though I would have liked to be in the 4 year...
One thing he asked me about I know I learned in undergrad but it was something that didn't stick in my memory lol (it's been a few years) and I know I'd be re-learning it again in vet school so I don't know if that's what held me back... but hey I got in!!!

Congrats!!

Thanks 😀

Hey when do you guys have to let them know by if you are accepting? And is there a deposit due at the same time?

THey said I'll be getting a package in the mail, but I think it will still take a little bit to get to me.

Thanks 😀

All due by April 15th; don't know if it has to be to them by then or posted by then, but I'm sending in mine tomorrow. If you haven't gotten your packet in a week or so after they sent it, email Sean and he'll send you another. You can pay over the phone if you want; join our FB group, there's a bunch of info on there.

Did anyone get into a school in the United States and opt to go to RVC instead (as an American applicant)? I'm just curious because that's the predicament I'm in now. Any suggestions?

Are any of you current students around either campus Monday or Tuesday this week? I am visiting and would love to meet up and hear more about your experiences at rvc.

I didn't. But I think I remember a few people in our facebook group saying they did, a couple turned down more than 1 school.
