WTF? I have been busting my a$$ for WEEKS and then go in to take a freaking exam, and I don't know 50% of the stuff covered. I am so sick of this BS. Sheesh, I wish I'd done grad school in chemistry or something. I am so discouraged and tired of this BS. Sorry--I am just so mad!!!!! 😡 😡 😡 .

what class is this? are you attending lecture? do your classmates feel the same way? if everyone else feels the same way as you, then it shouldn't be a problem. otherwise, try to talk to some counselors and see if your approach is flawed. you might want to talk to some people who are doing well in the class and see what they are doing. emulate them perhaps.

that's how i felt after my immunology exam...as did most others in my class. i passed...was just above the class average...fine with me. i'm sure you did fine too. just bare with it.

It was Micro/ID....At least I'm glad that it's over. I hope I didn't fail...here the cutoff for failing is 2 SDs below the mean.

2 SDs, that's not bad, it's 1 at my school.

OMG! That's horrible! I would have failed 1st year for sure if that was the case here.

I feel the pain I just took my micro/ID test yesterday and there was so much worthless info on there that it got to the point were I found myself laughing as I would come to the next question. At least the test was not a subjective mult. choice exam...don't even get me started on those. Wish my school had pass/fail b/c then I wouldn't have to bust my arse and could settle for just trying to pass a beast of an exam like the one i took yesterday instead of trying to memorize and then regurgitate all the minutia that i did over the last several days. Screw micriobiology!!! 👎

Medical school is more than just the first two years of pre-clinical work. Don't get discouraged. Clinicals are much different, and the reason that you are in medical schools -- taking care of patients.

Take a step back, though. The important thing is that you get what you need out of that class to take care of patients. And realize, that the important things in in medicine will come up again and again and again.

Chin up! There be many opportunities for you to show'em what you know! 👍

~15% of your class fails every test?

No. I believe that statistically speaking, if the grade distribution falls within a bell curve shape, then 95% of the class will fall within 2 standard deviations of the mean, and 99% will fall within 3 standard deviations of the mean... in other words no more than 5% should fail. That's how our school works too.

You're correct that 95% will fall within two standard deviations; however, the remaining 5% will be divided between the very top of the class and the very bottom of the class. Thus, 2.5% will fail, and 2.5% will be higher than the 2 standard deviations. This is assuming a normal distribution

You should put things in perspective and realize that you go to a school with some the smartest med students in the country. It might rattle your ego to not to be better than the average student, but you're up against some stiff competition. tests in med school have to test on extremely detailed points of the material in order to separate out the A's, B's, and C's. Just because you didn't know a lot of the material on the test doesn't mean you didn't learn the material important to actually practicing medicine. If you really failed, then seek out some help with your study strategies. Otherwise buck up and don't let it get you down.

😉 Right. I need to learn to divide 👍

yeah that's what I was thinking, I knew if i kept reading this thread someone would get it right!

I don't know if I like that system though...that would mean that, assuming normal distribution, 2-3 people would be guarranteed to fail each exam. Plus the rest of the grading is, i'm assuming, based on the curve...gunners delight...

That's why I love straight scale grading. Everyone can get honors (in theory only of course 😉 ) so you effectively eliminate the incentive for intraclass competition 👍

I would hate to think that someone is sure to fail each exam...

It kind of sounds like YOU give a damn! Well i relate... i just got a 5/10 on a stupid quiz... that i was prepared for!! Fortunately, the mean was only a 5.2/10 so obviously it wasn't just me....

hey hey--settle down, it's ok. I think what everyone has said is really important and wise. I think it's hard for us to accept that we can study so hard and not do well--infact, it's very dissappointing. I think the worst thing to do is give up. I think you should take this as an experience and find out where you may have went wrong perhaps (didn't get enough time to review, or didn't spend that much time on the minor, little details, etc.). There is plenty of opportunity out there to make up for this one exam. In the grand scheme of things, this one exam holds VERY LITTLE value in your ability to practice medicine and moreso, your knowledge to practice good clinical medicine. You go to a top 5 school--i'm sure it has to be challanging. Take the challange to your benefit, study hard, and tear the next exam up. Show them whose daddy. 😀 I know you can do it!! 👍 Best of luck.

i'll be more than glad to take your space at Hopkins azzrah. sorry that things aren't going too well. will get better as you get used to it.

I think that we need to come to terms with is that some folks will still "just pass" (which is great) even though they are doing everything they should. Not everyone in medical school will get A's, B's, some will get C's. The pool that med students are selected from are the very very top so obviously all of us will fall within certain areas...which is okay.

Holy crap, I have an overwhelming urge to hug a tree while I eat granola!

PS, look at my sig. I haven't given a damn for a while now.

this person is a MS2 people. they aren't some brand new MS1.

Thanks for your advice everyone. We started immunology and I feel a lot better now. I am not too disappointed that I did poorly on the exam (I am not even going to check my grade)...I am just disappointed with the way we are tested. The problem is that we are taught and tested by "exports," but they don't seem to realize that their topic of interest/lecture is not the most important/interesting topic in the world. What is the point of making up a test that half the class can't answer?
I can't wait to start seeing patients! 😀
