Anyone here from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences? How would you rate this school?

that 99% instate figure is not very encouraging.

Assuming you will be going to UAMS I would prefer to live closer and not have to deal with NLR traffic. There are lots of safe areas, it just depends on what you need. An apartment? A house for kids? How much money? The area very close to UAMS N or S can be cheap and safe - Hillcrest District, the Heights, etc are close. West little rock is more upper middle class suburban homes if that is what youre looking for.

Discobolus said:Yeah, there are a few of us UAMS people on here. It's a good school that is on it's way up. Dean Reece has a very strong vision for the school. I'm an M3 and there hasn't been a period while I've been in school here where new clinical facilities were not being constructed. They are getting ready to embark on one of the largest construction projects in the history of Arkansas, with construction of several hospitals (new University Hospital and State Hospital), outpatient clinics, research buildings, and a new dormitory. Not to mention that they continue to add to Arkansas Childrens Hospital which is outstanding (I'm on peds right now). I'm very happy with going to school here, and excited about the direction the school is moving in.

I am a current resident in internal medicine program at UAMS. The program is extremely busy and geared towards extracting as much work from residents and more so IMG's . There is hardly any emphasis on teaching or scholarly activities . The program is also very unstable in the sense that residents are constantly leaving and coming and there changes being forced upon residents . The most depressing thing is that several fellows from different university and county hospitals across the country were shocked to see the amount of work internal medicine residents were putting in (or asked to do) at a academic university based setting. The program leaves much desired and if If I were to go to match again, will rank this program much lower. If any prospective US or IMG applicant has a specific question then I will happy to answer to the best of my ability.
The only good thing for visa seekers is that this is an H1 program , at least for now. Also it gives no preference to it's own candidates for cardiology and GI fellowship
