Anyone here from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences? How would you rate this school?

I don't go there, but I'm from Arkansas and have several friends starting this year. UAMS is great if you want to do primary care in state. They're also trying to amp up their research and they got a new transplant guy who's really good.

I just started my first year at UAMS and have had a lot of friends who graduated from here. PM me if you have any questions.

I'm an M1 at UAMS, and since I'm from this area of Arkansas I've grown up hearing about all of the great things going on here. I know that several of the programs are ranked really well nationally (like geriatrics), and this is a great school to go to if you are from this area and plan to stay in practice here because I've heard that you automatically get interviewed for any in-state residency positions for which you apply.

Yeah, there are a few of us UAMS people on here. It's a good school that is on it's way up. Dean Reece has a very strong vision for the school. I'm an M3 and there hasn't been a period while I've been in school here where new clinical facilities were not being constructed. They are getting ready to embark on one of the largest construction projects in the history of Arkansas, with construction of several hospitals (new University Hospital and State Hospital), outpatient clinics, research buildings, and a new dormitory. Not to mention that they continue to add to Arkansas Childrens Hospital which is outstanding (I'm on peds right now). I'm very happy with going to school here, and excited about the direction the school is moving in.

Also starting M1, feel free to message me.

i've got a question for you uams people. do you know anybody at all who got accepted who isn't an arkansas resident. i've applied and am trying to figure out whether or not to fork over the additional money for my secondary and bother to write a letter about my arkansas ties. i'm an oregon resident, but i went to college in ar (hendrix), and some of my lor writers are hendrix professors, including one who has done research with uams. also, my husband is from arkansas, and his whole family lives there. i'm from oklahoma, so it's not like arkansas is far away from my family, either. are these strong enough to give me a remote chance, or would i just be throwing money down a hole by paying the secondary fee?

that 99% instate figure is not very encouraging.

Don't personally know, but those sound like pretty strong ties to me. I cant imagine it wouldn't be worth the secondary fee. You could always call the admissions office and see what they think as well.

I'm also an M1 at UAMS, and I've been told that there are 14 out of staters in our class. I can't confirm that exact number, but I do know a few of them, some of whom that don't have ties to AR that are as strong as yours. So I'd say, go ahead and apply. Good luck!

Last I heard UAMS has been considering taking more and more out-of-state applicants each year. Whether or not this is true I can't really say right now, but hopefully I'll get a better idea this fall when I help interview prospectives.

As others have said, it's not a bad school by any means. I doubt the M1 and M2 years are much different than at other places (plus we've got a good boards pass-rate), but I know for certain that our M3 year is much better than other schools. Residents/attendings tend to be less malignant (with a few exceptions, of course) and it's not very often that you have to take overnight call. After reading about students who were on call with their resident for 24 hours straight, I had to laugh and realize we really don't have it that bad.

I have a question for anyone familiar with the Pulaski County area. What would you consider to be a good area to live? I'm mainly talking about crime rate, but other things such traffic, local businesses, etc. will also be a factor. At the same time, expensive areas such as Maumelle would be out of the question. I know Sherwood is supposed to be fairly low crime. I've also heard West Little Rock is as well, but I don't know if they were talking about Little Rock itself or North Little Rock(or both for that matter). Other than that I know very little about the area so any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sherwood is very low crime, NLR also unless you mean in the ghetto downtown. Levy is somewhat ghetto but not particularly dangerous. Assuming you will be going to UAMS I would prefer to live closer and not have to deal with NLR traffic. There are lots of safe areas, it just depends on what you need. An apartment? A house for kids? How much money? The area very close to UAMS N or S can be cheap and safe - Hillcrest District, the Heights, etc are close. West little rock is more upper middle class suburban homes if that is what youre looking for.

Thank you for the information it's exactly what I was needing to help me get started. The traffic in NLR was something I was worried about because I had the impression it got pretty bad in the morning and evenings.

Dont live in NLR, aka "Dogtown", you will always have to drive 15-20 min to get anywhere cool to eat or go out. This midtown area around the river is 5 min to UAMS, and has some really cool apartments and houses. Hillcrest and the Heights are also awesome but pricey. The Heights is THE most upper class old money area in LR, WLR is just newer.

Where are most students living now that there is no on-campus housing, any current students care to enlighten me?

I will be interviewing at UAMS on the 29th. Are their interviews more formal, informal? Is it possible to obtain a residency list for UAMS? What field so most of the students pick? Thanks.

I went to graduate school at UAMS and applied to their medical school and the interviewers told me that they loved me but it would be next to impossible for me to be accepted because I am a Louisiana resident. I like little rock and I lived in west little rock. I have several friends their now. I'm currently a second year at LSU-New Orleans 🙂 Feel free to IM me if you have any questions.

I am an MSIV in Texas and am applying to family medicine at UAMS in Little Rock. What have you seen about the program? Does it seem to have good training? What is the deal with almost all of the residents being IMG's? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'd recommend one of the AHECs like in Fort Smith or Pine Bluff or something like that. I think there are 7, but I'm not sure. Most at the program in Little Rock are IMGs and some are very good, some are not. I've come across a former thoracic surgeon and a former orthopod from other countries that are stellar. Others, not so much. We have a large number in our class who want to do family med to go back to some of their hometowns and almost all go to an AHEC over staying in Little Rock.

I am a current resident in internal medicine program at UAMS. The program is extremely busy and geared towards extracting as much work from residents and more so IMG's . There is hardly any emphasis on teaching or scholarly activities . The program is also very unstable in the sense that residents are constantly leaving and coming and there changes being forced upon residents . The most depressing thing is that several fellows from different university and county hospitals across the country were shocked to see the amount of work internal medicine residents were putting in (or asked to do) at a academic university based setting. The program leaves much desired and if If I were to go to match again, will rank this program much lower. If any prospective US or IMG applicant has a specific question then I will happy to answer to the best of my ability.
The only good thing for visa seekers is that this is an H1 program , at least for now. Also it gives no preference to it's own candidates for cardiology and GI fellowship

Axe to grind much? You're a new member who just registered and has posted this exact message on 8 different threads (all incredibly old). Clearly you have a serious issue with the residency program, but cross-posting this in every forum just makes you seem bitter and undermines your credibility. Based on your post, I'd guess you're an FMG who failed to succeed at the program, which is uncommon but certainly not all that rare. I'm sorry for your issues and hope that you find a better solution than slandering the program on a message board.

Mods: this thread should be locked and our necro posting friend should probably be warned re: this sort of behavior.

I just wonder, if you are indeed a current resident there, if you thought that your PD might see this and automatically know who you are? Seems like you might be an IMG from the way you mentioned them, I hope there are multiple IMGs in your program....

I just completed my IM residency at UAMS, and I felt like I received excellent clinical training; I matched into the fellowship that I wanted, and I felt very prepared for the ABIM (which I took last month). I have stayed in contact with several people who finished residency here in the past few years, and who are currently doing fellowships, hospitalist jobs, and private practice internal medicine. They all feel like the training they received here equipped them very well to take care of patients and be competitive with people from other residencies. I'll post more details if anybody is interested....
