Anyone get word about Drew at UCLA?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
jeff: 323-563-4952 he's there 9-5pm. call anytime. hes very nice, but dont be annoying (be straigtforward with him, dont beat around the bush) cause he gets so many calls everyday. good luck.

Thanks docmemi. Any suggestions on how to ask him about my status?

if i were to call this is what i would say. but just use this as a suggestion...its the way I would do, which may be different from a lot of others.

"hi. how are you?" he answers. "My name is X and i interviewed on --date--. I am very enthusiastic about Drew and I was wondering if you could please let me know the status of my application?"

good luck.

Thanks docmemi!!!

Jeff is so nice....he said that my file was with the admissions committee and that I should be hearing something back by the end of the month, same thing as Brad. I'll be patient and hope for the best. Good luck everyone!

I have made up my mind, I will not call Drew, I will wait and see what their decision is. When Voltron and Brad find out I will be finding out as well. We interviewed on the same day so I will wait. So if Voltrons file is with committee I will assume mine and Brads are there as well. Good luck guys. I really hope I am talking to my future classmates and my future medical collegaues. Holla at ya boy

drew/ucla is an awesome program. great people there. such a special place. youll have an experience that no one else has had.

and dont be down if your waitlisted. like i said i have a feeling that most people are waitlisted out righ...so lots of people are also accepted off of the waitlist. i think they did about 220 interviews this cycle; next week is the last week of interviews. 1500 (to 2000) AMCAS-->220 interviews-->24 (well actually 23 cause 1 guy deferred from last year) (but prolly 46 acceptances by the end including waitlist).

good luck everyone!!

Thanks for the encouraging words docmemi! Drew is such a wonderful and unique program.

Effort to Shrink King/Drew Neonatal ICU to Continue
By Steve Hymon
Times Staff Writer

April 14, 2004

Los Angeles County health officials will stick with a recommendation to downsize the neonatal intensive care unit at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center to save money and give the troubled hospital a chance to right itself.

The decision came after officials took another look at the idea in response to community protests earlier this year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR THE RECORD: Neonatal units ?An article in Wednesday's California section about the downsizing of neonatal intensive care units at two Los Angeles County hospitals misspelled the surname of the medical director at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar as Loof. He is Dr. William Loos.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the Board of Supervisors backs the plan, county-owned King/Drew will no longer care for the sickest of babies.

Those infants will instead be treated at two other public hospitals, Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center northeast of downtown and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance.

The neonatal ICU at King/Drew was renovated in the mid-1990s, and hospital officials have often trumpeted it as offering among the facility's premier services. Among other things, it tends to babies born to drug-addicted mothers and infants born prematurely.

The proposal would also downgrade the neonatal ICU at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar.

In a spirited rally in support of King/Drew in January, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) told a county health department employee that "we will be on top your desk" unless the decision on the neonatal unit was reversed. Waters could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Dr. Xylina Bean, director of the neonatology division at King/Drew, said the move was "blatant racism."

"If they downgraded service at Harbor, the protest would be such that they would have to listen to them, whereas this community is just a bunch of poor folks they don't have to listen to," she said.

At Olive View, the downgrading of the neonatal unit was viewed differently. "We do not like the inconvenience this causes for those patients affected, but we recognize that the [health] department must use its limited resources carefully," said Dr. William Loof, the medical director, in a statement.

In a letter to county supervisors, Dr. Thomas Garthwaite, director of the county Department of Health Services, characterized the move as a consolidation, because the number of babies born in county hospitals has fallen sharply in the last decade.

Garthwaite also noted a decision by California Children's Services ? a state program that pays for the care of critically ill children ? to no longer recognize King/Drew as a highly specialized hospital for care of newborns and children. That program cited King/Drew's pediatric department last year for lapses in record-keeping and care by physicians, nurses and doctor trainees.

Separately, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education proposed closing the neonatal residency program. The group found that King/Drew didn't treat enough sick babies to ensure adequate training. The decision would not become final until after the hospital's response was considered.

On Tuesday, Bean said all the problems that were identified had been fixed.

Garthwaite said he recently met with Bean to discuss the change. He said the decision ultimately stemmed from problems found at King/Drew but not at Harbor-UCLA.

Just thought I'd let you all know that Dr. Aguilera called me today...he said he was calling applicants to update them on the status of their apps. Said the executive committee met today and had decided to offer me a position in the class. he didn't say how many offers they were going to make or what the exact breakdown at this point was but he did say that they had accepted 20 students as of today. it sounded as though he meant that 20 spots were filled as in 20 people had accepted their acceptances...if that makes sense. he told me i was #20 of 24. anyway, i hope this helps relieve some of the pain of not knowing anything....

I imagine several spots will free up once May 15th rolls around. Sit tight everyone!

Hey exmike, don't make the mistake of turning down Drew. It's an excellent school, right in CA, and you can't beat that tuition. Paying 60K extra to go to Case over Drew is NOT a good deal. 👍

LOS ANGELES
Ward Where 3 Died Reopens
The unit at King/Drew hospital monitors cardiac patients. Deaths under questionable circumstances last year prompted its closure.
By Charles Ornstein
Times Staff Writer

April 17, 2004

Los Angeles County health officials have reopened a ward at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center where three patients died under questionable circumstances last year.

The 22-bed unit, known as 4B, houses patients who must be hooked up to cardiac monitors but do not need intensive care.

As of Friday, 10 of the beds were back in operation, officials said.

King/Drew closed 4B in late December after state health inspectors questioned the actions of its nursing staff.

County health officials also acknowledged at the time that some staff members did not have the training to safely manage patient care.

Concerns about the monitoring ward first arose last summer when two women died.

In one of those cases, inspectors from the California Department of Health Services found that a patient's heart had slowed and stopped over a 45-minute period before nurses responded.

She died soon afterward, despite resuscitation attempts.

A physician discovered that the other woman had stopped breathing. She was revived but died four days later.

Inspectors determined that nurses had failed to examine both patients adequately and that some apparently had never been taught to use new bedside monitors.

A third patient died in December after doctors and nurses again failed to intervene appropriately.

Since the unit's closure, the hospital has carefully screened nurses to ensure that they have the proper qualifications to work on 4B, county health department spokesman John Wallace said Friday. The hospital has also brought in nurses from outside agencies.

All employees working in the unit were given additional training, and the monitoring equipment was tested and found to be working properly, Wallace said.

I called and spoke to Jeff today. He informed me that apparently Drew has already rejected several people post-interview. I asked him how long the waitlist was, and he said that they Drew committee has decided to keep approximately 50 students on the waitlist. So some of us that are waitlist actually might have a chance! 🙂

Hey Everyone,
I wish I had found this site earlier on in the application process! You guys have given eachother incredible support - wish I had been a part of it back in the stressful days between secondaries and interviews!
Anyway, I am curious to know who will be my fellow classmates at Drew/UCLA next fall, since it sounds like the class is almost filled.
Who else has been accepted and will be there in July?

Lolli

Hey Bigboogie,

I was just wondering if you were from the LA area. I'm just curious because three other people I heard being accepted were all from LA metro.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah at my interview they only indicated that a few (no more than five) of the 2003 matriculants were from out of state.

I am from out-of-state and they put me on a waitlist. I interviewed back in January.

Medbound,
Jeff really said that there will be only about 50 ppl on the waitlist?? 'Cause that's good news........

I just called Jeff and he told me they sent out post-interview rejections......but he didn't know anything about 50 students being put on a waitlist. He also mentioned that your state of residence doesn't really matter (everyone is given equal preference) which I thought was interesting. He also said they accepted about 20 students so far and some of them have already withdrawn their acceptance.

yep. Jeff told me 50... I hope he knows what he is talking about.

I am out of state too....currently living in the D.C. area.

I interviewed in December. I am on the waitlist right now.

Hey Verbalassasin,
I interviewed in the beginning of January, and got a freaky unexpected phone call on a Saturday morning from Wanda Hall in mid-Feb. She only told me that I was accepted as a sort of end-note to the conversation regarding my address change. I got the acceptance packet in the mail about two weeks later.
Good luck to all of you who are on the wait-list, or still waiting to hear anything. When I interviewed at Drew Dr. Aguilera told me not to really take any decisions about waitlists seriously until after the mid-May shake down. So many people are withdrawing applications these days - spots are opening up all the time. So hang in there.
I meant to leave my email, in case those who have been accepted for next year want to get in touch with me.
It's [email protected]. I'd love to hear from anyone who has been accepted already, and plans on going to Drew/UCLA, or is still deciding.
Good luck everyone.

Orchid-

I'm from the Central Valley in California. Not LA area at all...about 4 hours north of LA. I did some research in LA for one summer but that's the longest I've ever lived there 🙂

Today the Verbalassasin was placed on the "Alternate List". Had to let ya know. I hope what I read is true about only 50 being put on this list. Oh well I guess there is still hope.

Hang in there verbal!!!!! It will happen for you. Stay strong and positive. I am so nervous to go home and check the mail......wish me luck everyone! :luck:

I am going to be positive because it could have been a rejection. I know there will be movement so I will stay positive. I am about to write a letter accepting the alternate list position and continue to PRAY. Holla at ya boy.

Hey Bro,

would you go to Drew over Meharry? No kidding tho!

proph...

Drew, the opportunity to stay at home and serve the underserved is uncomparible. If I got both I have to choose drew. I could see myself at meharry. That school has so many beuatiful people I have no problem with the school, but its less expensive for me to stay home. Plus my ride is out here.

😀 Drew is a great school and has a unique and one of a kind program to help serve underserved communities!!! It is great opportunity and I hope to be a part of that this upcoming Fall 2004!!!! :luck:

King/Drew Loses Appeal of Poor Rating
By Charles Ornstein
Times Staff Writer

April 21, 2004

A national accrediting body has upheld its unfavorable rating of physician-training programs at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, making it among the most troubled teaching hospitals nationally.

Last fall, King/Drew and its affiliated medical school appealed the negative review by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, but the council affirmed its decision at a meeting this month, Los Angeles County health officials said Tuesday.

This is the second consecutive unfavorable rating given to King/Drew for its oversight of 18 residency programs. If the problems are not corrected within two years, the council could move to shut down all its teaching programs.

Separately, the council is forcing two individual doctor-training programs at King/Drew ? surgery and radiology ? to close in June because of problems there. Another training program, neonatology-perinatology, has been recommended for closing. And three other programs ? internal medicine, anesthesia and family medicine ? are on probation or have received warnings.

Los Angeles County, which runs the hospital, pays Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science $13.8 million annually to run the training programs at King/Drew, which is in Willowbrook, south of Watts.

In light of the recent problems, county health officials are renegotiating their contract with Drew University to increase accountability.

Dr. Harry E. Douglas III, interim president of Drew University, said the accrediting council's decision had been expected and that officials were working to correct longstanding problems. He said he hoped to correct all the problems within a year with the help of outside experts from the University of California and new staff.

"We're disappointed but we're prepared to move forward," Douglas said. "It's turning around, and we're working very hard on it."

Douglas was appointed in January after the school ousted President Dr. Charles K. Francis. A national task force had called for his removal.

The task force, led by former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, accused Francis and other leaders at Drew University of allowing "the evolution and continuation of the present crisis" and of failing to respond "with the sense of urgency that the situation demands."

Dr. Thomas Garthwaite, director of the county Department of Health Services, said his office was working with Drew University to pare back the number of residencies at the hospital and focus on core programs.
