Wondering what your stats are?
gpa, dat/pat, when did you apply?

3.45 overall, 3.45 science, 23/23/16 (AA/TS/PA). aadsas # is in 1700s, interviewed late sept.

i really enjoyed my interview at columbia this past friday.
we'll see what happens!

good luck to you guys. hopefully you'll respond to this thread later on with good news.

anyone else who has already heard good news and will most likely matriculate to columbia?

Hey...just a couple of days ago I was set on going to Stony, but now I think I've finally made up my mind...see you in Columbia =)

tanya...i anticipate deciding between stony and columbia. both seem like great schools

Anybody consider Penn? Why Columbia over Penn?

hey mr benny, i will most probably be joining you at columbia next year.

columbia>upenn==$15k/yr times 4 years

i also think nyc is a slightly more versatile place (more options of where you can head off to afterwards). also, in the ivy league world, columbia is a (slightly, once again) bigger boy than upenn

i am going!!

3.43/3.44
21/22/16

I have an interview on Jan 21....so we'll see what happens...Im hoping for west coast though

i also do! see you there.

Tanya - what made you decide Columbia over Stony? Just curious.

awesome.. 3 of us so far. last year, the columbia class of 2008 had a really long thread (i'm sure you've seen it), keeping each other up to date on stuff like financial aid, housing, and all that. Let's give it another month, around the new year, i'll start a columbia class of 2009 thread, and we can do the same thing, to help each other out.

by the way, drtagman, tanya, and t12kim, when did you guys interview? I was wondering if maybe I met one of you at mine, itwas on Sept. 24th.

I most likely will go to Columbia next year.

I had my interview on Oct 1st.

Did you guys send your deposit yet?

hey everyone
congrats for those who got accepted.

my file is complete in other universities...but i emailed Dr McManus last week and he got back to me today saying they only have ONE LOR!!!

do i contact infosource? of what? (i don't think i have the capacity to chase my LOR's to send another one to columbia) 🙁 ..especially during finals.

can someone suggest something? 🙁
thanks

columbia requires 2 letters right? 2 or 3, i forgot. either way, i know its during finals, but if you want to get your app complete quick, my recommendation is to contact Dr. McManus and see if they accept a faxed copy of your rec. if they do, just send a quick email to whoever wrote your letters, and give them the columbia fax #, and explain the situation about the LOR getting lost. if they don't accept fax, just ask your recommenders as nicely as possible to re-send them. Trust me, do NOT go thru AADSAS. that will be more time consuming and a far greater headache.

best of luck.

3..they've received only 1!

Yup, don't go through AADSAS, unless you want to wait another full month for things to clear up.

I would go directly to your LOR writer, and ask again to send letter directly to the dental school (beg if you have to, it's worth it); he/she probably will understand it just fine since letters do get lost during admission process. This might be the hard way for you, but still the best way.

the LORs shortage happened to me too, except it was ZERO!! they needed 3 letters from science faculty right? i sent mine to columbia directly. aadsas eventually came around, but it took them way too loooooooooong

I sent my LORs stright to the schools initially, as they weren't ready when I sent in my AADSAS app, but Columbia played the whole "now you seem 'em, now we don't" with my transcripts - excessively annoying. so yeah, from personal experience - don't trust AADSAS (who claimed they sent my transcripts twice before i gave up and paid for my school to do it 😡 ); send the stuff directly.

good luck fruity!

MrBenny: I had my interview on November 12th.
Tzips: I was deciding whether I want to live in Suffolk (which would take me two hours to commute by trains to the city), or right there in Manhattan. Living in the center of it all seemed a bit more appealing to me, especially since I already spent my undergrad years in Long Island. I also like that Columbia's class is larger than Stony's, meeting lots of new people is always fun. 73 out of 75 people getting into post-doc programs from Columbia's class of 2004 sounds pretty good too.

Sorry to keep beating the dead horse Tanya, but keep in mind that postdoc also includes GPR/AEGD...which are basically extra years of dental school where even a monkey could get in...just for your information.

good lord, badvibes, go somewhere else. your complete disdain of columbia is becoming pretty damn annoying. if you have nothing positive to post, then don't.

tanya and others, look forward very much to meeting you guys next year. Have you sent in your $1000 deposit yet?

and i know this is very premature, but have you guys done any research on the housing options there? apparently, there are 3, with Bard Hall being the worst one. The tour guide at my interview wasn't able to show us a room, but was wondering if anyone saw that, OR saw the gym/weight room in bard, and could comment on it.

hey mr benny i was also wondering about the dorms. Bard looks good esp if you have a view of the water. What are the other options like and are u guys married or have kids already or just commin out of undergrad?

not married, no kids. the info about the housing I've culled from the Columbia 2008 thread. You should definitely check that out, there's alot of info there. From what I've read there, Bard might have a good view, but the rooms are tiny, basically dorm style, and the bathrooms/showers are all communal. Personally, I prefer more of an apartment style type of housing. However, the dorms definitely give you more proximity to the campus, and also to classmates, making it easier to meet people.

let me know if you find any new info on that thread I might have missed.

i'm just coming out of undergrad, and not married or anything...
And yes, I've already started looking through the housing options (even though I should probably be spending my time studying for my biochemistry final :scared: ), and from what I understand, there are 3 options: Bard Hall, the Towers, and the Georgian. Bard is dorm style and only has single rooms. The towers and the georgian have apartments for 3-4 people. All three places are extremely close to the school. The dental students at my interview said the best place to live is in the Towers, but that its very hard to get. Oh, and by the way, in the apartment housing, every person gets their own room.
I am definitely crossing my fingers for Towers/Georgian.

I haven't sent in my deposit yet. Will try to take care of that in the next few days.
=)

Tanya is on the mark with the housing options. I've also heard that its really hard to get towers your first year, and that most end up in Bard.

By the way, do you guys know what the computer requirement is? I was not able to connect to the link that they provided in the letter.

anyone on Columbia's waiting list?

The stats they gave us says 20% of graduate get into specialties and the rest go to GPR or AEGD cuz columbia's clinical aspect is not strong, even the dean told me that. You guys who don't wanna go there, hurry up and withdraw so I can hopefully get in =)

thanks tanya, i will definitely try to get into the apartments then. are any of you on the west coast? Cali maybe? and are you guys for sure goin there? i still have a ucsf interview and thats the only other place im really considering

good idea. I want to check UCSF out, but I already decided to go to Columbia. I got only one life and I think it is worth it to study at a Ivy League. This kind of chance does not come often in life you know. I am not saying that Columbia is the best dental school. There are of course positives and negatives.

I think it is common that people go to Columbia for the name. I know that is what is most attractive to me about Columbia. But also the fact that it is in New York, and that really is the biggest, and most diverse city in the world. Holy sh_t, I was there the other day visitng NYU, and that the city is HUGE!

Anyhow, anyone have any interview stories at Columbia to share?

The name is obviously something to most people. But it is also a school for those truly wishing to become a DOCTOR of Dental Surgery due the way they approach dentistry. If you want to be a glorified hygenist, then you may want to check out those schools whoes only claim to fame being thier "clinical school status".

Oh...I was never aware that only Columbia dentists are considered doctors. Im sure this would be news to the thousands of non-Columbian practicing glorified hygenists out there.

oops those are fightin' words.

I am going to Columbia too. See Y'all there.

Nah, Im not fighting.....whats the point....99.9% of the people on this forum know that his comment was probably one of the most ignorant comments on these forums to date. I wonder if he considers his personal dentist a glorified hygenist? and I wonder if he has the guts to go on Dentaltown and tell everyone that they are all glorified hygenists.

And then they'll ask him how long he has been practicing for and what is he gonna say?? "duhhhh, I havent even started dental school yet"

I am in at Columbia...sent in my deposit and everything, but like a few others out there I am waiting on UCSF. I grew up in the Sacramento area and it would be great to return to NorCal, if it works out that way. If not then Columbia will be just as good.
I looked into the housing a little but I couldn't find much info. Does anyone have more info on the married housing options? I too was told durning the tour that the towers was the way to go, but that was from a married student.

Actually, According to the United Nations, Toronto is the most culturally diverse city in the world and not NYC like most people think.

Just off the top of my head, Toronto has the most Sri Lankans outside of Sri Lanka and one of the largest Indian populations outside of India. IT also has the largest Italian population outside of Italy and the second most Greeks outside of Greece. Also, more people speak Mandarin as their native tongue than English in Toronto, although English is still the dominant language.

As far as biggest city, I believe Mexico City is the largest city in the world.

Now you know!

so, what you're saying is, since more Sri Lankans live in Toronto than anywhere else, naturally, NATURALLY, the logical conclusion from that is that Columbia sucks.

dude, seriously, stop posting in columbia sites. i simply don't know what you get from ridiculing Columbia at every turn you get.

get a life man. this is starting to get lame.

Hey fuk up.....when did I ever bash Columbia in my last post? I love how you just completely took my post out of context and put words in my mouth. I was just clarifying the guy who said something about NEW YORK CITY.....not Columbia. Were you too ******ed to figure that one out?

My friends, I'm not in Columbia yet, but I knew how annoying this be. Let him talk crap, he's lonely and stupid, that's it.

i didn't take anything out of context. and what words did i put in your mouth, that columbia sucks? haha, read your SDN history, and come back and tell me i put those words in your mouth. screw off.

Just because I have voiced my opinions about Columbia in the past, that means that every post I make can be taken out of context and just be assumed to be Columbia bashing?? ummm, yah....that makes sense! 🙄

The dude said that NYC was the largest and most culturally diverse city in the world, and all I did was correct him. If that is somehow considered Columbia bashing, than so be it.

certainly not as high as Temple.
