I made the mistake of filing my 2013-14 FAFSA application by estimating with the previous year's tax information, since my parents and I were planning to file our taxes in late March. The application for financial aid is due at the end of April. So it was when I received the instructions from the med school about a week ago that I realized that I need to file my taxes before I send my FAFSA.

Has anyone dealt with this sort of issue? When I called the financial aid office, they told me that I should file taxes, wait two weeks so i can use the new irs retrieval tool, and then send the fafsa.. But how would I be able to use it if Ive already sent in my fafsa application for this year ? Would I still have to file a correction?

Thanks in advance for any input

Make sure to E-FILE your taxes, which gives you the two week turnaround for the IRS retrieval thing. Sending in a paper return will prolong the period to six to eight weeks.

You are correct, this will count as a FAFSA correction. All you need to do is go in, use the tool, and then resubmit FAFSA. It's pretty simple.

Thanks for the advice Doctor Strange, ill make sure that i do that...So once I use the irs data retrieval to make corrections and then submit it, is there any additional step? I remember reading something about mailing in a signed copy of the Student aid report - or is that for paper fafsa only? Once again, thanks for your help

Some financial aid offices will ask for signed copies of returns, too if that is what you mean. You would have to check with your specific school.
