Hi there, we had a job fair today at school and I passed the army booth and got interested in asking them about some stuff. I found out that they have their own dental school and if you are qualify, they pay for your schooling and everything. My question is, is anyone on this forum currently attending the army dental school right now, or knows about it? Is it easier/tougher to get into? Thanks

I remember reading that while the army dental school you graduate with no debt , you pretty much would have decided to make army dentistry a career instead of becoming a private practicioner. You in effect have something like a 10 or 15 yrs of dentistry in the army. Could somebody pull that thread up.

Definately not the same route as HSPS which is for people who go to other dental schools and want to make their way into becoming private practicioner but are taking the army as a detour along the way.

I was under the impression that for each year they paided for you owed one.
So for 4 years of the Army paying you serve 4.

Anyhow.... I would love to serve. However, EVERYONE including people that have served siad it would be the dumbest thing I could do.

u have to serve one ACTIVE year for each year of school (so 4 years for most people), and then several more years of RESERVE duty. this is the catch that most people aren't aware of, but i don't know the exact amount of reserve years which u are held to. i haven't looked much into this since i am not considering it, but i get the feeling that u are unlikely to get an accurate answer about this from the recruiters

I think the OP meant the Army run Dental school not the HSPS which is going to any dental school and having the army pay for your schooling.

there is a army dental school?

not a bad idea if you lack the discipline to study....

  Isnt that the truth! Hell if the Air Force had a dental school i would probably give it a try

so how do we get more info on this army school?

were they one of the schools listed on our AADSAS apps?

i would have to venture out and say that there is NO army dental school..however there IS an army med school called USHOES (spelling)

Im pretty sure you are confused. Im almost positve there is no dental school run by the army. What you have to qualify for is there Scholarship. Which you owe them 4 years active duty + 4 years Inactive Ready Reserve. Plus since you're an Officer, they can techniqually call you up if they really need you forever. Unless you resign your commission.

What schools they have are Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) schools, and they aren't what you're thinking. You go to MOS school to qualify for the paticular job you've picked. This is what every soldier does right after Basic Training. Like my MOS schools were for Combat Engineer in Ft. Leonardwood Mo, and Dental Specialist(basically an assistant) in Ft. Houston, Tx.

I'm considering taking the military route, but am still doing a lot of research. I get a lot of mixed signals about it from people I know and from stories I hear about people who did the program.

The Air Force, Army and Navy have programs where they help cover the costs of tuition, some fees and offer a stipend while you're in school. Although each program is different, in general you offer X amount of years for each year of support they offer. The army is 2 years for each year of school they help you with... Navy is 2 for the first year and 1 for the following years with a min of 3. But you also have to do certain things while you are in dental school like take military classes (not boot camp or anything like that). You don't need to do it all 4 years of dental school either... I'm thinking of doing 2 years and serving 3 for the navy. You serve some time in the reserves too... but I don't know too much about that.

Although your salary is low to start out with, you will save a lot on tuition and cost-of-living (which can be up to $200,000 depending on where you go)... which you could use when you are done with service to open up on your own. Most people wouldn't start their own practice right away anyway... so the military may be a good way to gain some experience, not worry about malpractice and save up $$$ so you can open up right away. And they pay for CE after you've earned your degree.

I haven't spoken to recruiters... and I don't intend to until I've spoken to actual dentists who went through the program. I know of one army/navy dentist that was stationed in Iraq. But he says he chose to go.

It's a big decision!!!! Good luck to everyone!

Oops! My bad. Got the medical thing mixed up. 😳

But you get the idea. If there were such a thing as army dental school, they'd probably make it a career for dentist who were to go that route unlike HSPS

The thing I've been wondering is how competitive each of the branches are when it comes to getting the scholarship. Since somebody told me that there were a limited number of scholarship it is fairly competitive.
