Anyone know anything about the University of Toledo?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Even as an in-stater, I was slightly horrified by our OOS tuition. But all my OOS friends are becoming Ohio residents, so next year their tuition will be halved. At least cost of living isn't too bad around here. Many of my OOS friends are coming from big cities - New York, LA, San Francisco - and they think our rent (running about $500-700 for a single apartment) is super cheap.

Hmmm... REALLY
Because of your post, I have come back around.

Come on UT, send me an invite!

As long as your parents don't claim you on their taxes and you have proof of living in Ohio (like a lease), OOS students get instate tuition after the first year. Residency requirements are fairly lax in Ohio, so it's good for out of staters.

accepted via email today (told letter would come in the mail) and they would be running the background check 🙂🙂

i interviewed ~3 weeks ago. yay!

good luck to all!

If you dont mind, when did you complete? I am OOS applying there.

I'm assuming you want to know when I was complete??

I think it was the first week of September, and was offered an interview a few days later.

Good luck!!

Is any other oos-er turned off by their oos tuition ~51,000/yr
I think I'd rather do DO and save myself $$$

as an OOS student, the 1st year is a killer, but all it takes to get in-state tuition for years 2-4 is:

-legal residence
-an ohio driver's license/car registration
-financial independence
-ohio voter registration

As Abilene mentioned, the cost of living is pretty nice. The combined rent on my 2BR apt is less than the studio garden apt I had when I was living in DC.

I've been put on the alternate list. 🙁

Anybody know how likely it is to be accepted off the alternate list before it becomes the official ranked waitlist in May?

IIRC, as they evaluate people each month the scores remain static and they have a set bar for an acceptance so if enough people come in below you it can push you to the top of the list and you can be accepted. (meaning, there is a chance that you can be accepted after every adcom meeting)

If someone else knows I'm remembering correctly, please post.

Either way, I'd continue to show interest. I was pulled off the Alt List in July (March Interview). I wrote a couple of very strong letters, I really think it helped.

Actually, I had an interview there a few weeks ago (and since accepted!!) and I remember it slightly differently (someone plz correct me if wrong). I think they set scores and then accept only the top few (5-6 or something) from a group of a few interviews dates. For everyone on the waitlist, I remember them saying (b/c I asked a question about it) you are NOT reviewed again at each meeting afterwards regardless of how high your score is compared to the group they are reviewing....you remain on the waitlist once put there until they start pulling from it in may...

Here's what my letter says:
"If you do not receive an offer of acceptance into the class by virtue of our rolling admissions process, the alternate list will then be prioritized by the end of May 2008."
So I was thinking it worked along the lines of what Depakote said. I'm just clinging onto the last hope that I missed it by one spot on the list or something. Do you know anyone who got pulled from the list before May? I went through all the old threads and couldn't find anyone.

My letter also says "it is not necessary to submit post-decision materials to the Office of Admissions." Which sounds like even if I write an update letter, they won't read it until May anyway. Sigh... I really really really liked Toledo. I think I got my hopes up too high based on a good interview. (I mean, come on, he gave me a list of reasons why he liked me and said he would give me his highest recommendation ever!) 🙁

I'm flying out there this Sunday to the great Toledo express airport woot!. Any good hotels by the school?

If you don't have a car I'd suggest getting a room at the Hilton, it's more expensive but in the long run you'll be spending less than if you had to get a tax from the airport to a hotel, hotel med school, then med school airport. Since Hilton offers a shuttle service it'll save you quite a bit. My taxi bills for staying at a hotel 40 bucks cheaper than the Hilton was around 60-70.

I hate that. At least one interviewer at each of my schools led me on like that, and I certainly wasn't accepted everywhere. Definitely 🙁.

Even if it is a little on the pricey side, I would recommend the Hilton also. It's located on campus, so you won't have to worry about finding your way there on interview day.

Be sure to tell the Hilton that you are interviewing. I know they used to have a special rate for students coming to interview, but I'm not sure if they still do or not. It seems like the discount was roughly $70 versus the $120-150. The other benefit to staying at the hilton is that you don't have to walk outside at all to get to school. If you use the tunnel system you can get from the Hilton to any building on campus without ever going outside. That's especially important come December through February.

If my wife gets a full-time job in Ohio she can become an immediate resident and I can too. I'd have in-state tuition from the beginning then yay.

Did you interview with Pan?

Are you an Ohio resident? I interview in a few days and I'm oos. Also do you mind posting your stats? UT is my #1 choice and I'm getting nervous...

Yes, I'm in state, and with ties to Toledo. My stats are right at UT's medians. Unfortunately, I'm still on hold. 🙁

Don't be nervous... it's a really laid back interview day. Everyone was really nice and there were no intense interview questions.

Last year, I got in OOS (off the waitlist) with a 3.49 and 32... I also had more than a few things working against me with my application.

I can echo that the interview day was really laid back. Good luck.:luck:

Very laid back and everyone is nice. Even though there aren't "intense" questions, do expect one or more ethical questions. I think this is a requirement. Not trying to scare you, just making sure you are aware of this.

Good luck and have fun!

I think someone from my undergrad was accepted last year but she interviewed in october. I know UT starts interviewing later and goes until April, I'm just hoping the class doesn't fill up too much. I had an interview at another school the 1st week of January and that day their admissions told a large group of us that they were now interviewing for waitlist positions because their class is full. I didn't want to go there but it was very disheartening considering how much I want to go to Toledo and it's my last interview...

I'm waitlisted. Boo! Anybody knows if I will be looked at at all before May 15th?

I believe that as new files are reviewed and scores assigned, they take the top X number of files from the applicant pool. This could be from the set of applicants currently being reviewed or from the wait list. So theoretically you could be pulled after any monthly adcom meeting prior to May. It's just that they don't do the formal rankings until May.

Don't get too upset about the waitlist. I got in off the waitlist and I know there was a lot of movement last year.

Come to the Coffee Hour Meet-and-Greet!
I will be meeting and greeting sometime in late March, so you guys definitely should come.

I was waitlisted too. I called last week and i was told that there will be no waitlist movement until after May.

Does anyone know the attire for the meet and greet? Thanks. 😀

I'll be there this Sunday!

I haven't heard anything... I would assume casual. I'll check with Abilene, she's organizing these.

So...ya. Casual attire.

So I just received an interview offer today (March 12th). I must have just barely made the cutoff between interviewees and rejected-after-secondaries. I am already accepted at a DO and I will find out about my state MD this friday. If it doesn't come through for me, I'd be thrilled to go to UT. Do you think I'm interviewing directly for a waitlist spot or doesn't UT operate that way?

I just received an interview invite, too, and plan on going...not sure if it's just for a waitlist spot

just got an invite too. and the whole cost of living thing and in state tuition after the 1st year is very appealing 🙂

Wonder if we are all the last round of invites. Oh well, I suppose it doesn't matter. Its an interview 🙂, so it means we all have a shot!

I just got back yesterday from my interview. Very nice place...was thoroughly impressed by the school and the interviewers. Also, the students that I've met have been super nice. Definitely, among my top choices. I hope I get in.

Congrats on your interview invites! Good luck!

I interviewed March 3 last year and wound up on the waitlist, but another interviewee that day that is now in my class got in right off the bat. Based on that, I would guess these aren't strictly waitlist interviews at this point, but I can't say for certain.

I know of two people who interviewed in March last year (one of them was the last set of interviews for the year) and they both got in without being waitlisted. Good Luck!

I interviewed 2/25 and just got accepted yesterday (email), so I think you have a chance of direct admission 😀

Best of luck to you guys and remember, there is no shame in an interview later in the season. Better late than never, in my mind :luck:

I called on Friday and they told me that my application is still "under review for an interview decision," and I should hear from them in the next 2 weeks. Should I be worried that we're mid-March and I haven't gotten an invite yet? Though at the same time, I haven't been flat-out rejected, but still. Anyone else in this boat? What do you think the chances are?

I'm in this boat too, as far as I know, b/c I haven't received any thinletters from Toldeo as of today. I have a decent spot on my state waitlist, and I know of a several people who, in years past, were rejected outright from my state school but got in and went to UToledo. So I was kind of hoping for an interview there but yeah, it does seem too late to be getting an offer! Though I just got one from st. Louis, and they are scheduling into april at this point.

While interviewing later in the season does put you at a disadvantage, there are still spots to be filled as long as UT is holding interviews. We do not invite you here just to interview for the alternate list. I spoke with the admissions office about this today, since I know many people are worried that they will pay to travel here and find out the class is filled, but I was told that we don't operate like that. So good luck to all of you with upcoming interviews :luck:

Thank you, Abilene. That has reaffirmed my faith in humanity (at least in Toledo). I can't imagine much worse than spending $300 to fly, $150 to rent a car, $100 on hotel, time off work...just to find out that I don't even have a shot at direct entry into the class.

I am excited about my interview in April!!!!! 😀

If you stay at the Hilton, make sure to mention you are an interviewing student. The special rate is $89 a night.

we have to rent a car from the airport? seriously? is there an alternative?

Most airports have a counter of rental car companies. It's perfectly normal. You're renting it from Enterprise/Hertz/etc, not from the airport.

The alternative would be to take a taxi. Or maybe find a hotel that has a shuttle service.
