Anyone know if you can defer if accepted off a waitlist?

Assuming you have good reason, do schools allow you to defer if accepted from a waitlist? Do they really expect everyone to be able to drop there life and move right away? What if you have a family, etc.?

Typically not because most places have a May 15 cutoff date for deferring. But that is an individual school decision, so you would have to inquire about it at your school.

I was accepted off a waitlist in mid-August last year. The school granted my request for deferment to pursue research. In fact, my request was granted over the phone just minutes after I had asked for it.

how did you ask for it? did you send in a letter or did you call? i was looking into this, my PI at the NIH has asked that I stay and he offered to call the Dean of Admissions and ask that they let me defer in support.

Which school?

Thanks,
Hope
