Anyone else out there learning medical spanish either on your own or in a class? I'm volunteering at a local free health clinic and we get a lot of Spanish speaking patients who don't understand English. We're very lucky that our main nurses are fluent in Spanish to translate, and I would like to learn as well. I know basic "survival" Spanish from two years in High School, but not much medical Spanish. Any suggestions, hints, or just advice? Thanks

That's why we come to UAG (Univ. Autonoma de Guadalajara)!! ;)

You can buy a cassette/book set called Spanish for Health Care Professionals. It basically has health related vocab, phrases, etc. It is taught at a level for those who have no Spanish basis (me) to understand. If you have any Spanish knowledge it may seem a bit remedial, but it should still accomplish the goal.

Have you used this?

I'm going to my local bookstore to buy the spanish on tapes...
I know that material on medical spanish is available too!
Look on amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com

Actually, the Spanish for Health Care Professionals is the exact set that I went out and got the other day. It seems like it explains pretty much everything you need to know in an easy and organized manner. I do know a lot of the more general stuff, but I'm learning how much I did need a pretty hefty review too. I'd suggest the books for anyone too.

dwstranger:

Do you know if they offer summer or elective options there?

Thx.
